I have no experiance what so ever with lead rifle loads.Where I live my local range is only 100 yds and this is were 80% of my shooting has to be done.It seems kinda a waste of bullets powder and barrels to shoot my full bore 308 match rounds. So I was thinking of doing a reduced power lead load for 100yd practice.Anyone ever mess with this? Any load data? And is there anything I need to know when doing a lead load for 308?

Re: 308 lead load

Have you considered Remington 150 grain core lock? They can be purchased in bulk and shot reasonably well at 100 yards? Or follow the advise above and get a .22LR.

Cast Bullets are great! Cheaper loads and unlimited barrel life.
Buy the Lyman cast bullet book
http://www.midsouthshooterssupply.com/item.asp?sku=000159837249
and go to it. You can start with ready made cast bullets one of the best makers is:

An excellent website is: http://castboolits.gunloads.com/
If you want to get into casting Lee products are very good to start.

I use Trail Boss, Unique and 4198 powders with excellent results.

If you cast you can shoot almost as cheap as a 22 but still keep the "one gun" familiarity. Good shooting!

I've got .22s not the same.

Thanks these are the reasons the idea appeals to me.

Re: 308 lead load

Mr. Humble said exactly what I was going to suggest. I do that with all of my centerfire rifles except the AR15 (22LR conversion kit).

Shooting 150 grn flat nose, lead at 2200 fps with very hard lead alloy from my 30-30 it costs 9.3 cents a round including gas check. More time involved since you're casting and sizing your own bullets, but at 1/5 (at least) the cost of full power loads you can shoot a lot more.

Google "Cast Bullet Association". I've been a member for years. They have great information and very reasonable membership. Matches all over the country. Be advised: It can be addicting. Shooting .2 to .3 inches with cast bullets at 100 yds is done. Lots of attention to consistancy.
