.308 Winchester

Anybody interested in this combination should see the link below, where Dan Newberry duplicates the FGMM 175 round using these components. Very good read as he adjusts for variance in weight between manufacturers brass. The above load is almost right on.

This is where I got the info from to test my loads out. I am working with lapua brass to try and replicate the same now. The best Ive found with Lapua so far is 41.8gr of 4064 and 42.4gr of 4064. The 41.8 shot a .47 5 shot group at 100 yards today.

178 gr. AMAX 45.3 gr. Alliant Power Pro 2000mr. 2.822" COAL .015" off lands

Rifle built by Chris Self at Loose Cannon Firearms in Autaugaville AL.
B&C Light Tactical Stock, Vortex Viper 6.5-20x

Shoots fantastic in this rifle, there is a little room to boost velocity up to 2700fps. Zero pressure signs.
I think there may be some accuracy potential left by changing jump to the lands.

Was shooting 175 SMK's from a 1/10 twist Savage w/ great results. Got a model 12 Benchrest w/ 1/12 and it hated the 175's. Just tried this yesterday and shot very well. Twist is actually 1/12.25".

Lapua Brass
45.5g Varget
155g Lapua Scenar

This round has consistently punched 1/4 inch groups within the 100 yard mark and 1/2 inch groups out to 300. Currently getting just over 2700 fps.

45gr R15 behind 155gr Bullets seems to be a good accuracy node in my rifle. Two different bullets, two different cases, two different primers but the same powder charge produce great accuracy for me. These are 10 shot groups.

This is my new accuracy load.

Was using 41.6gr of h4895, and the groups (5rnd groups) were around 1moa to 1.5moa average.

The new load, at 42.0gr of h4895, I have fired only 10 rounds of. 5 rounds were chronoed (2580fps) and the next 5 I shot a group of 0.6 MOA at 100 yards.

Have yet to try varget, but have some under the bench. Don't worry about lot differences in hodgdon. The lot difference between varget powder is only +\- 8fps. So I'd say it's very consistent

You might try bumping the load by .50 (42.5gr) and try that.

I've been tinkering around with a good many bullet powder combos for my .308. It's a custom ( AICS , Jewell hvr, stiller Tac 30, #9 HV Bartlein 1:11.25 at 28") It's been shooting the 185 juggernaut REALLY well with 47 grains of PP2000mr. 2835 fps. However, I think I may switch to IMR 4064. I shot a five shot group at a 3/4" dot and here's what I got.

I'm not sure if this is "fact " but I've got a really good buddy of mine , hide member, that is an ASS KICKER in FTR. He told me that the 185 juggernauts seem to fly "better" I'm the range of 2700 to 2750 fps. Anybody heard that??
Also, he suggested some h4895. What do you guys think??

Here's the rifle

I just chuckled when I saw that one hole, ;) Very Nice!

then I shook my head when I read about wanting to try other powders, To what gain?

IMR 4064 is a great powder, is what's believed to be in the FGMM for it's temperature insensitivity and low fluctuations in velocity.

Read this link: http://www.snipershide.com/shooting...ral-gold-medal-match-load-mk-316-mod-0-a.html

BTW, Nice Stick

Thanks, but I think your misunderstanding.... That group was shot with IMR 4064... My loads right now are with power pro
2000mr. So that picture was just a 5 shot group I did while loading some .308 stuff for a buddy and decided to try it. The power pro shoots damn good too, not that good though. I'm with ya on the switching thing. If it's not broke ..... Don't fix it

No, I got it. You shot that great group with 4064 & then later said he suggested H4895, (what do you guys think?) It's late I could still be wrong, LOL
Nice stick and shooting in any case ;)

Oh ok I got ya. Yeah, you're right. Screw the 4895. Thanks for the complement. And advice.

My plan is to try loading 168gr HP BT in the Lapua small primer brass with 44gr of Varget.

I also need to know how to adjust for the A-MAX 178gr?

The top load gave me a one hole at 100 yards from a CZ 550 308.

I was very surprised as it was the first time the rifle was fired.

The 44gr load was a hot load so I treated the bore with NuFinish car polish to reduce the drag within the barrel.

20" barrel bolt
neck sized lc brass
fed. 210m
41.7 gns. 4064
175 berger otm's
seated to magazine depth

My little rifle loves this load...but I wish it would shoot Varget as the 4064 is much more finicky with temperature differences

For the 2000 MR fans, this is a load I found yesterday during a load workup session.

46.8 gr 2000 MR
Lapua Brass (annealed and neck turned to .014" +/- .0005"
BR-2 Primer
175 SMK (sorted for uniform base/ogive measurement)
2.830" COAL (mag length on my rifle)

2698 fps
SD 5 fps

Rifle:
Remington Action w/PTG one piece bolt.
Benchmark 24" 5-C 1:10 Barrel
B&C "A-5 Style" Stock
Sinclair Tactical Bipod
NightForce 12-42X56 NXS
Triad Tac rear "Bean Bag" rest

Here's the target

ry%3D480

Granted this was only a 3-shot load workup group but I have no fear that this load will do just as well in a 10-20-30 shot group based on previous experiences.

Also found that the Berger 185 gr VLD Hunting Bullet "liked" this powder but I started too low in charge weight. When I hit 46.4 gr the groups were still shrinking, the speed was averaging just under 2650, and the SD was dropping with every .4 gr increment. SD of 7.5 is where I ended which was 2.5 fps less than the load prior.

Monday we'll start at 46.4 gr and go up from there until we either hit pressure or find a nice accuracy node.

Unfortunately I'm limited to 100 Y right now for load development as our longer range is undergoing some rebuilding. When finished I'll get to shoot longer distances but I've found that loads for my rifle that shoot like crap do likewise at LR.

???????? NuFinish makes bore paste? Please tell me more about using car wax in a barrel......
Not WAX! Polish! There is a difference...

A water soluble polymer is not a wax...

I got this information from a top Olympic shooter.

Test a see for yourself as I have and let me know.

???????? NuFinish makes bore paste? Please tell me more about using car wax in a barrel......

Most car "waxes" today contain a fine, non-embedding polishing compound. They can work every bit as good as J-B Bore Brite or others. Another benefit is that car "polishes" contain some solvents that help dissolve deposits like carbon and all without damaging the bore.

It doesn't necessarily have to have to say "Gun" on the product label to work well and it often costs a whole lot less.

I just never had heard of it. I cringe when some say they use WD-40 on guns. Learn something new every day.

I've been messing around with my loads. 168 amax, seated 2.17 to the ogive, 2.8 coal, over 43.5 or 42.5 grains of varget, have it wrote down at home. Use fgmm brass, and federal 210m primers. Was getting 2600-2640 fps out a stock rem. sps tactical 20" barrel 1/12 twist. I am getting sub moa groups at 100 yds. but would love to tighten them up. Anyone else use these components? I also have some imr 4064 to play with.

At 5.8mils to 700, that shows about 2645MV, that's not slow and not a surprise that you are getting ejector marks. That's pretty quick for that short tube. My 178's were 2450 with 43.5 of varget in WW brass.

That does sound better. I must have something wrong in JBM. It shows 2500fps. If I have ejector marks at 43.5 but max in the lee manual is 45?????? That seems wicked hot!!!

Load manuals are mearly guidelines, not hard and fast rules. Let your gun tell you what it's pressure limits are, not a generalized reloading manual. Also, IMI brass may have a lower case capacity than WW/RP etc brass, similar to LC brass.

Toying around with new loads in my 5R, think I found a sweet spot. SSA brass FL sized, 168gr Hornady HPBT, federal 210m primer, 43.5 gr IMR 4064 set at 2.800" COAL. I discounted that one round as clean bore/cold bore with possibly some lube still in the barrel. The other 4 did very well. Gonna press more of the same to double check but I think we're good here.

these are with a 700 sps varmint 26" 1-12 twist.

have not tested any further than 100yds.

What velocity should the 168 GMM factory load produce from a 20 inch barrel (1:12)?

TIA for any insight.

Load Data...
Original Thread: Loads For .308 Winchester

Out of a Factory Remington AAC-SD...Shoots one ragged hole

44gr IMR 4064
Federal GM range pickup brass
GM210M primer
168gr Amax
2.84" COAL
~ 2585FPS SD of 14

43.5 and 44gr of Varget also shot very well.
Couldn't get the heavier bullets to work with this particular rifle...kind of odd that the 1:10 twist really prefers the 168gr.

GAP Crusader spec build

175 SMK
44.2 grains Varget

This load worked the same in two GAP Crusader rifles. 3/8" @ 100 yds and held very good accuracy to 1k.

sakobob,

They are the B476

http://www.lapua.com/en/products/reloading/bullets

I used the mag primers cause that's all I had at the time when I was doing load development.
All the store were dry, couldn't find any standard large rifle primers at the time. I've been using mag primers ever since.

I had to up .4 of a grain with this new lot number. See below.

Must add, that powder was weighed on a Lyman DPS II
I'm going back to beam scales to try and lower the ES and SD.

Forgot to add this pic. The flyer was my fault. But the next three were good to go. I simply adjusted horizontal to keep same poa w/o tearing up sticker. (3/4" circle) This is same load as the 42.0 IMR 4064 with 178 amax at 2.230 to ogive.

Re: 308 Winchester

Must add, that powder was weighed on a Lyman DPS II
I'm going back to beam scales to try and lower the ES and SD.

I use a Chargemaster for dispensing my powders. I found that closer attention to case prep (neck turning for uniform thickness), Neck sizing with minimal shoulder bump, gives more band from the buck than just weighing with a different scale.

I've also found that sorting newly purchased brass after it's first firing by "straightness" and neck thickness uniformity yields good results. Cases that stay straight after that first firing are more likely to be of uniform thickness throughout the case itself.

OK, it may take me two or three boxes of brass in order to end up with ONE box after sorting but when I do this I sure do get some nice uniform loads with low SD/ES. The rounds even group well at 300 + yards.

My favorite load for my .308 with Benchmark 5-C bbl is 44.1 gr Varget, 175 SMK, Fed or Wolf Primer (I can't tell the difference over the chrono.) with an OAL of 2.825" Need to use a drop tube or be comfortable with the "Varget Crunch".

47.5 gr PP 2000-MR (zippy)

Larue OBR 1:11.25 Twist 20inch

M118LR clone using Varget

175Gr SMK, 42.5gr Varget, LC 07 LR Brass [trimmed, not weighed], magazine length

[Not even remote pressure signs.]

String 1 - 9 Shots - Warm Rifle (as oppsoed to cold or scortching hot):

Low: 2548.41(ft/sec)
High: 2567.87
Adv: 2558.00
Variation: 19.46 (ft/sec)
SD: 7.21

2: 2558.65

4: 2567.87
5: 2564.61
6: 2564.07
7: 2548.41
8: 2562.44
9: 2548.95

Grouping was about 1 inch... 4-5 shots in the center at about 1/2 inch, rest circling around the edges about 1 to 1.25 inches. [Second time using the rifle...]

Seems like a winner in a Larue 20 inch OBR.

Re: 308 Winchester

I'm just getting started with a Howa 1500, 24" heavy barrel in .308.
Only load I have so far that the gun that it really seems to like is:
155 Amax
Hornady Match Brass
IMR 4064 46grns
Fed 210

Can anybody tell me how much 4064 to start with using LC brass. I figured to drop down to 44 grns for starters. Any suggestions appreciated. Have a bunch of LC brass and I wanted to see if I can get close to the load listed above accuracy wise and near the velocity which is at 2930 with my friends chrono.

As a general rule, a 1:10 will stabilize better with bigger bullets and shorter bbls. However , a 1:12 usually pushes a 175 grain pill a little faster than a 1:10.

I started working up a load using RE15, 175AMAX, and Lapua brass for my Remington 7005R. It just didndt seem to like them as much as the 175SMK so I just kind of stopped the process. Perhaps revisit it again. I'm going to try some of the Berger 175gr OTM Tacticals as I read they are a secant/tangent hybrid and are perhaps more tolerent to jump that the AMAX. The COAL on those AMAX loads juping them .010 or 020 was nuts.

Perhaps revisit it again. I'm going to try some of the Berger 175gr OTM Tacticals as I read they are a secant/tangent hybrid and are perhaps more tolerent to jump that the AMAX. The COAL on those AMAX loads juping them .010 or 020 was nuts.
I run rl15 in all my 308.

Can anyone share their experiences using IMR 4064 with 168 AMAX? I'm seeing starting/max charges all over the place... Some say start at 36gr with a max of 41gr, some say start at 40-41.5gr with a max of 45-46gr. My Hornady manual lists very low charges compared to other sources, but the loads are under their ".308 Service Rifle" section (there is no load with 4064 in the regular .308 section) so maybe that's why.

I've seen many pet loads with 4064 and the 168smk in the 44-46gr range, but I'm unsure if the longer bearing surface and/or different shape of the AMAX would make those loads produce too much pressure. I've already loaded up some rounds from 37-45gr for an OCW test (5rds each in increments of .4gr with FC brass trimmed to 2.009 at a COAL of 2.800), but haven't gotten a chance to test them yet.

Obviously I'm starting at the low end of the spectrum and working up while watching for pressure signs, but any experience or recommendations with this combo would be greatly appreciated.

For the guys loading the 178gr amax bullets, what die set are you using? I have a set of the Hornady Series I custom grade dies and the seating stem leaves a ring around the top of the bullet. I ordered the custom seating stem for the amax bullets to go in it but it still makes a slight impression into the bullet jacket. I am loading 44gr of Varget in Federal brass with a COAL of 2.85.

that load kills it in my rifle as well, just trying to figure out how my MV is so high.... im running 43.3 @ 2.11 to the ogive. but out of a 19 inch barrel and getting 2611FPS at 10 feet. The MV is confirmed on my app as my drop chart is perfect to 1k.

would the twist speed effect velocity? im running a 10 twist.

---------------------------------------------
Yes sir it would. A 1:10 twist is going to stabilize better, but you won't get get the velocity as say a 1:12 or 1:11.25.

Had the same thing happening with a set from whidden gunworks. I am pretty sure it has to do with the extra length the tip provides and how high the powder will be on a loaded 308 case. They shot fine I read somewhere that using a powder that isnt in big pellets like the IMR4064 I was using would cure it. After shooting a few rounds and seeing it had no impact on the accuracy I decided I didnt really care.
