6.5x47 Lapua

VERY NICE john so you prefer the berger to the ELD??

The Bergers seem to hold their grouping a little better for me as the range increases but I don't think I ever tried the 140gr ELDs with Varget, only with H4350. So, I may need to give the ELDs another chance.

John

Nice. I have very similar results with 140 Hybrids and H4350. I recently tested Varget with 130 AR Hybrids and 139L. Very accurate. I'm getting ready to test 140 ELD-M and Varget.

Anybody try RL-26? Thinking about giving it a try with the 140's.

Seems to show some promise in the 6x47 and 6.5 creedmoor, figured it "may" work with the 6.5x47.

Whoops put this in the Wrong post

3069 at 36.2g in 6.5x47L??? What length barrel do you have? That would be the fastest velocity on record unless you are talking about something other than the 140 ELD-M? I just finished testing Varget and 140 ELD-M in my 26" Bartlein 6.5x47L this week and 37.7g only netted 2823....

I saw a couple guys in here with 21-22"barrels. Anybody running a 18-20 incher with 120-130 grain bullets?

I run a 20" x47
RE17 powder of choice, shot this load thru several TX summers 100+
Zero issue with RE17. in fact only powder i currently use period
42.5 under a 123 runs 2975 mild load bug holes all day long
3000fps can be achieved without much fuss, lapua brass is $$. the gains are nominal downrange over 42.5

Those are some awesome numbers Jedi, RE17 is Temp stable? I've got a blank waiting on an action going toward a 16.5/17" 6.5x47 hoping to get 2800fps out of it but know i'll likely be pushing. I might stick with 18".

RE17 imho is more affected by cold than heat
all powders are affected by temp period, everyone has there own witch brew
Cooking a round in chamber will have more effect than a hot summers day, keep fresh round out of chamber until your ready to fire
Quick load is an invaluable tool, pays for it self pert quick. No more stack of 1lb jugs of powder for testing
17" should make 2800fps via 123, much depends on load config barrel setup etc etc
pm me for more info

Did a pressure and speed test using RL-17 and RL-26 with the 140 Amax (have a bunch still).

Rifle has a Brux 1-8" twist finished at 18" suppressed.
Speeds measured with Magneto Speed.
All bullets loaded at 2.115" to Ogive

RL-26:

41.0 grains = 2463 fps
43.0 grains = 2561 fps (43.0 grains was the most I could get in the case and still seat the bullet at that length)

RL-17

39.0 grains = 2622 fps
41.0 grains = 2780 fps

Looks like you can't get enough RL-26 in the case on the 6.5x47.

On a side note, it worked amazingly well in my 6.5-284, worked up to 3200 fps with the 140 Amax before I saw pressure.

Lord that speed for a 140 with an 18” barrel is smoking. RE17 seems to be it for shorter barrel applications.

How much jump do you use for the Amax? I have several hundred of them and haven't found the magic number in my 260 or my son's creedmoor.

Varget has been my go to with better SD's and accuracy over H4350 in my 26" Bartlein 6.5x47L. Dont get me wrong, H4350 is producing awesome numbers and accuracy but Varget is just downright amazing.

Padom, what are you loading on? Scale wise? I've been using 4166 because most of our rifles use varget at home and i'm trying not to dip another in that pool. I've gotten SDs of 6-7 with it and decent speeds with the 130gr hybrid out of a 23" barrel. Went to vans down here the other day and picked up some 4451 to try out also. They had h4350 but i still can't make myself jump on that bandwagon for fear of not being able to find any when i need it. RL16 is apparently becoming a good substitute too. I meant to get some of that yesterday but didn't see any.

Tons of 8# jugs of Varget in stock locally for me. I was loading on a CM up until a few weeks ago. FX120i now and Forster CoAx

Wondering if i need to transition to the FX120i also. Dunno if the Gempro is cutting it. I've been using a chargemaster and Gempro and my SDs are okay but not quite where i want them to be.

I've been getting single digit SD's on a Chargemaster for years. Fx120i/Auto thrower/Auto Trickler is just faster

I don't have any velocities. These are the first shots out of my 6.5x47. 28" bbl. The orange pasters are my .308. I'm thinking this barrel will be very easy to load for.

You referring to the Vans in Brandon Ms?

Very similar to my x47L 140 ELD-M/Varget OCW. This is out of a 26" Bartlein

Yeh At 36.6 my 140EldM group looks real good which if your charge of Varget with 36.5 at 2744fps is any indication then I should be at 2750ish or slightly more which is my exact accuracy speed for 140 eld'ms in my 65 creedmoor. I guess if I don't work up anymore I can just share dope cards between the two rifles. For the price of these EldM's it's really hard for me to want to try Berger hybrids.....

im interested in your results with the 130s and varget if you dont mind sharing...im switching from a 6mm creed to the 47 should have my action and barrel back from the smith tomorrow or thursday latest.
i have 140 hybrids,140g RDFs,130 hybrids(which i had great luck with in a 260)H4350 and varget...planing to start with the 130s and varget.

Small world I’m from Florence

I'm from from the delta. Usually have to order everything but now that i live in Flowood we got Vans.

Running 130gr AR Hybrids out of a 23" bartlein with 4166 (generic varget from what i'm told) i pushed to 37.8 but got pressure signs. Highest i saw with no can was 2890s with 37.4/37.6. Settled on 36.3 because my previous load 36.2 and from 36.2-36.4 only had a 6fps shift. Netting me 2830ish IIRC. I have several friends using 130 hybrids and varget you should be good to go.

Thanks I️ appreciate the info...I’m hoping to get the 130s up to 2900...we will see might have to run RL-17...I’ll post up my results.

Thanks padom....gives me some great starting points and what to expect...I’m pretty excited about the 47...I’ve been want to build one for some time now.

You might have to push to get 2900 with varget or 4350 but it is attainable assuming you have the barrel length. I don't think i'll ever switch from the 6.5x47 what it lacks in powder capacity it makes up for in case design. I see people constantly pushing the round beyond what it's supposed to be able to take and get great brass life. Not to say i condone pushing well beyond the limits but the cartridge just doesn't seem to mind what i'd venture to guess is north of 70k PSI.

With RL17 from what i understand it should be pretty easy to achieve.

this new rifle will be a 23" hawkhill so i may be expecting a little to much from the results you posted but we will see...if i cant get at least 2850 from the 130s ill switch over to the 140s which im pretty sure i can get 2750ish out of...like i say ill post up some results as soon as i get out.
thanks again for the info.

I was able to get 3000 fps with 130 vld’s with RL17 out of my 24 inch barrel. Load was extremely accurate but RL17 is extremely temp sinsitive and turned out to be pretty much useless for me. For comparison I got 2860 with the 130’s out of both varget and h4350 both.

Holler at me sometime and we can get together and shoot

have any of you guys tried or are any of you shooting the 140g RDFs? if so how are they shooting and any load data? ive searched around a little and not much info so im started to think i jumped the gun when i bought 2k of them.

I’m shooting them and love them, my current load is
37.5 gr varget
cci 450 primers
.030 jump
2766 fps
SD 6.7 for 20 rounds
5 round groups in the mid .2’s

ive used this load now for about 1500 rounds and it has worked very well for me in competition, both Fclass and one PRS match. My experience with them has the the BC is actually a touch higher than advertised. If you don’t want them holler at me and I’ll take em off your hands. Also they like To jump and see ponder base to ogive than the hybrids so I wasn’t able to get the velocity with H4350 that I could with the hybrids which is why I switched over to varget

I think you’ll like them, I’ve won several Fclass matches with them at 600 and 1000. That 37.5 gr load is a touch warm so start low. Last match I shot in I used new brass and had a slight bit of sticky bolt.

First thanks again for the load info padom and Bull.

Well I️ got 63 rounds through the new 6.5x47 this morning and pretty happy...it was 21deg when I️ was done so colder when I️ started.

140g RDFs .025 off cci450s new brass varget

#1 36.3g 2684
#4 36.9g 2735
#7 37.5 2762
No obvious pressure signs at all...

So #6 37.3g looks like the load and is about 2750 Id say...I️ only chronyd the 3 above..the upper #6 is 3 rounds lower #6 is 6 rounds...

Hey guys thought I'd post this here I started another thread about a recent ladder test I did at 300m with my 6.5x47l. Today I tested the 2 nodes that I identified here is the results. The 139 scenars are seated 10 thou off lands at a coal of 2.840. The 40g load is slightly smaller group with slightly less vertical but I didn't really want to run the rifle this hard. Thoughts ?

if i had to choose between those 2 groups id take the 40g load and play with seating...i dont like jamming so id go .005 off then .020 .030 .040....139g lapuas are not real jump sensitive and why id make the larger jumps.

that said i dont shoot ladder test i personally think that is a test better suited for BR and F-class guys...ive shot a few in the past but never walked away with a load...i will also add im not the best group shooter either so i try to keep things as simple as i can.

i will look for an upper charge weight(like i did here with Padom and Bull) that looks reasonable and drop 1 to 1.5g off and start there...i normally load 7 of each charge weight in .2g increments...i shoot 1 of each charge weight over the magneto speed and watch the velocities and look for pressure signs...i then shoot 3 shots from each charge weight as groups...once ive ran through all the charges i start over but on new dots/targets...as you see in my target above #6 is my charge...i will shoot 3 5 shot groups with that load at 550yd...if it will group 1/2MOA or less im done.

Thanks mate looks like the 40g load running around 58k psi so I will work with that. Curious what other guys are running at how many of up around 63k psi??

I have been shooting the 140 RDF's in club series PRS matches. Got a 3rd, 2nd, and then 1st with some good shooters present. Load is as follows: 140 RDF, CCI 450, Seated to jump .030", 37.4 grains Varget. Load is a little warm. I am using a 22" Hawk Hill 1:8" twist and I am getting 2,770 FPS.

140 eld match
cci 450
36.5 varget with new Lapua brass
col 2.65
gets 2700fps
out of 26" Bartlien
thats a light load I know but I get consistent
.2-.3 groups so I haven't tweeted it yet.

6.5 x47 Surgeon 591 LH
Hawk Hill 24” TBAC Break
Beanland built
140 RDF CCI 450
35.8 Varget
2669 fps (unsuppressed)
Slow velocity, but I get 5.7 SD (Magnetospeed)
Redding Type S Full Length with expander ball
.002 bump with .002 neck tension

Yeah way to slow! I’m shooting a 24”” inch mullerworks 140 RDF AT 2836 and have another higher node at over 2900 FPS. I would just keep working up till you find pressure then look back down for low sd’s. Then address seating depth for tighter groups.

Stainless31, thanks for the reply. I'm no longer doing load development with my 140 RDFs. I am able to get .333 MOA when shooting groups (.015 from lands) and am happy with my SD. Even though it is a slower velocity, elevation is constant at all distances. The downfall of the slower velocity is the bullet being pushed by wind. I've seen posts with others getting good groups with small SD with 37.4 of Varget, but I am trying to squeeze more rounds out of the barrel before it needs to be replaced.
