6.5x47 Lapua

Annealing will not have any affect on case head separating. Sloppy chambers and pushing the shoulder back are the only 2 causes I've ever traced down.

I only know of one person that doesn't anneal and shoots the 47. He was getting split necks about the 7th firing and got worse from there.

My chamber will technically close on a No-Go gauge but it's extremely close. The chamber of my bighorn build is a one thou difference or so and wont close on a No-Go. I use the same sizing die for both. Bumping the shoulder 2-3 thou from fire formed brass in both chambers. Again though it's been through 12 firings at least.

Thinking about adding an AMP to my list of things to get this summer if it's that necessary to prolong brass life.

It'll definitely increase neck life and make it easier to keep SDs as consistent as possible. As for head separation, I don't think it'll have any appreciable affect.

The intial stretch of that long chamber might weaken them from the start and you're on borrowed time from then on. 12 firings might not be that bad considering that.

I can put slight ejector marks on every firing on my 6-47 and have yet to lose a case before the barrel is worn out. I start with 200 new with every barrel

I don't anneal. I'm on my 8th firing. Haven't even had to trim brass yet. 2820fps 140eld. Still shooting tight.

I'm getting ready to purchase dies. What bushing size are you guys using for no-turn brass?

140 hybrids shoot great. Anyone care to tell me how much they are jumping 140 rdf’s

Jump them .030" to the lands. I have had great success with 2 different barrels chambered with 2 different reamers doing this. Get them running 2,750 and they shoot great.

I spent the week working up a load.

Hornady 140 ELDM
Virgin Lapua brass
CCI 400 primer
H4350 powder 40.5gr
COAL 2.723" (.010" off lands}

Rifle is a Savage magnum short action
McGowan 26" medium Palma profile 1/8
HS Precision stock/ CDI bottom metal
Vortex Viper PST 6-24 FFP

After quite a few different charges and seating depths. I shot these:

Ended up with 2769 FPS average and a 5 SD

100 yard measured .211"
IMG_2529+.JPG

The second is a 300 yard group. I didnt correct for wind. It was 6-12 variable from 4:00 .

Worked this up at 500 via my modified ladder test and then did seating depth test at 100. This was the final result. 5 shots at 100.

39.8gr H4350
147gr ELD-M
CCI 450
BTO 2.070”
2710 fps

24” 8 twist Criterion Light Varmint

A little compressed but not too bad. OALs hold at a little over 2.8”. The 2.070 is base to ogive.

John

gotcha thanks...i can get 40.1g of 4350 in a case with a 4" drop tube and im just touching the powder with a 130g berger hybrid...at 2.065 base to ogive thats .020 off in my rifle...i havent shot any 4350 with the 130s yet because i could not get any velocity out of it with 140s in my last barrel...may have to give it a try in this new barrel.

I bought some to try this fall for hunting but haven't shot them yet. I did notice Hodgdon has data for this combo on their site.

I'm using H4350 at 39.5g and getting 2690 avg with no pressure signs, working on jump now to find the accuracy

working up a load for a new bbl on my 600 yard bench rifle and hopefully fclass rifle,,it is a single shot Stiller PredatorV RBLP in an TRacker stock with a Jewell trigger,,I had the throat punched out to seat the BIB 135 BTs above the NSJ and the freebore worked out to .215 so my loads may be hot in a shorter freebore,,,bbl is a 30 inch 4 groove Krieger..

getting groups less than .200 at 100 yards with 42.5 H4350 and 38.5 Varget and around 2950 fps with both loads,,,only got 75 rounds on bbl and will take it to 600 to fine tune loads once I get 100 rounds on bbl,,,,the long freebore allows for higher powder charges and the 30 inch bbl helps also,,

the 135 BIB BT is advertised at .615 G1 BC and at 2950 should make a heck of a 600 yard load if the accuracy holds ,,wil update after shooting at 600,,

with the ,215 FB the 135 BT OAL is 2.795 .016 off the lands,,

Final load with the 143 ELD-X -
39.8 H4350 with CCI 450 primers, first firing on Lapua Brass. 2.160 CBTO. Right at about 1/2 MOA. Tested at 150 yards. This will be my hunting load.

26" Rock Creek PVA nut barrel. Norma Golden Target 130 gr at .015 off the lands Remington 7 1/2 primers, Varget 37.5 gr. Sub 1/2 MOA 5 shots group at 520 yards.

.215 freebore???

.215 freebore???

yes .215 works out just right for the 135 BIB`s ,, seated .016 off the lands the COAL is 2.795 and will still fit in an AI mag,,, my other rifle has a .167 FB and it works really well with the 130 and 140 Berger bullets VLD`s and Hybirds but is too short for the 135 BIB`s without seating the bullet down about .050 in the case below the neck shoulder junction,,

.215 freebore???

testing some this morning with H4350 ,,Fed 205 GMM and the 135 BIB BT seated .016 off the lands,,,looks like a node at 40.2 and 42.0 from tests at 100 and 300,,got 10 loaded each at 40.2 and 42.0 and gonna go shoot 2 5 shot groups each at 600 later this evening,,

here is what the 135 BIB loaded .016 off at 2.795 OAL and the .215 freebore,,,this rifle is a single shot but it would still work in a AI mag and it gets the bullet out of the donut area and creates powder space ,,

the 42 gr load with the 135 doesnt show any more pressure than the 40.2 and I went up to 42.8 but the groups opened back up and I couldnt get enough powder in to reach the next node,,

at 300 yards the 40.2 and 42 gr loads both shoot less than 1/2 inch 5 shot groups but too close to tell which is best and gonna keep going out longer range until one shows itself better than the other,,

it is an 18 pound bench rifle but the freebore and loads would work in a repeater also,

Just working up some new loads with the Sierra 150 MK. So far looking good. All the loads are using Lapua brass, H4350 and cci 450 primers. All testing was done at 200 yds. The orange dots are inch and an eighth big. I only did 10 and 20 thou off the lands. 40.3 to 40.7 looks like it wants to shoot. I’ll play around with it some more. Loads show no pressure signs. Primers are round no heavy bolt lift and no marks on brass. I went all the way up to 41.1 and still had no pressure, but groups were opening up. Didn’t have the chrono set up. Hopefully next time. I have very long freebore in this reamer. So that I’m sure helps with the pressure.

what freebore length and twist rate does the 150 SMK take using the x47L case ??

.255 freebore. Could probably work with a .230 or something in that range also. Its a Bartlein 5r gain twist 7.5 to 7.

what is the OAL with the 150SMK seated .010 off with the .255 freebore ??? I am looking forward to your chrono numbers and info on bbl length ?? if they will fit in an AI mag and will go fast enough to increase the range over the 140 class bullets at 2850 fps I might have my Tac 30 action barreled for the 150 SMK..

The barrel is 32” long. I’d guess from going off of my 140 load that the 150 is going 2820-2830. OAL for a 150 and 10 off is 2.9375. I’ll try and get the chrono out next time. Probably going to be a couple weeks though.

please keep us updated im very interested to hear how fast the 150s are running.

has anyone tried the 150SMK is a 8 twist?? I have the freebore for them but only an 8 twist. however the berger calculator gives me a stability factor over 1.5 for my area. Would love to try them but they are not available in Australia yet.....

My plans changed for the weekend and the rain held out. I got out this morning to test the Sierra 150s. Very windy. Gusting 10-15 mph, over cast but very sunny. Barrel is still speeding up. This barrel is a little slower then my other one. The 140 load started today at 2790. By the end of my shooting they are going 2820-2830. The barrel now has 115 rounds on it. The barrel before this one, with 140s were going 2860. I shot at 600 yards today. I had 4 different loads. 2 showed really good and the other 2 were ok. Here is a group of the best load. My SD was 3.8 till shot 9. Then the 9th shot was faster, 10th shot was slower. Shot 5 I believe was a light change. Shot 9 was the faster one. Average speed with the 150s and this load was 2735 range. Wish I had more of that load. Its maybe a little faster now. I’ll shoot a match now and then rechono again.

I started initial development on my 24" AINA Bartlein barrel yesterday. Rounds 6-15 on the new barrel were the ladder test with two promising nodes. I tested a couple and settled on the low one to shoot until the barrel speeds up at which point I'll revisit development and go with the higher node that averaged 2725 assuming it doesn't shift.

Low node load:

Lapua brass (new)
Berger 140 Hybrid seated .020" off the lands
36.5gr Varget
Remington 7.5 BR primer seated .0015-.0025" deep

20 round string from fouled cold barrel AVG 2673fps, ES 9fps, SD 3.0fps

10 shot group.
