Dimple on bolt lugs

As I was cleaning my rifle I noticed these dimples on my bolt lugs. I was wondering what they were from and if it is a safety or reliability issue?

They are factory. They are not a safety concern.

Their reason to be?

I don't know.

I assumed they hold a pocket of grease for lubrication.

Yes, sorry I should have specified. Thank you for your reply. I am a total noob to bolt actions and I've never noticed these before today.

May be an artifact of the forging process. In any case, no meaning to it, it is not on a load bearing surface.

Not a load bearing surface??? Those lugs are what keeps the bolt from shooting through ones head...

Yes but where the dimples are is not where the receiver and bolt mate together.

Yes, I understand that, just saying it's part of the lug and the entire lug bears the force.

They're probably from hardness testing the bolt lugs.

M14 bolts have a dimple in them too, and that's what it's from.
