Hey, guys. I have a potential optics setup in mind, and wanted to get some feedback.

I'm thinking of getting a Falcon Menace 4-14x44 FFP 1/10 mil, Burris XTR med. rings, and an EGW 20moa base. This would all be going on a Savage build of mine. Any thoughts/advice/hatred/wisdom on that setup would be greatly appreciated, as most of you know much more than I do about good quality optics. As an aside (not optics-related), how do you all feel about E.R. Shaw barrels?

Thanks

Heronion

Sounds like your on a budget, thats okay. The optic setup you mention sounds like it should be GTG, I've put a very similar setup on another rifle. As far as ER shaw goes, I have never used one, and I dont hardly ever hear about them anywhere reputable. I couldn't say if that means they are bad or not, but I'd rather spend my money on a for sure builder.

Re: Falcon Menace, Burris, EGW - Advice?

Thank you, sir. I am a little sketchy myself on the Shaw barrel. They seem too cheap to be good. But I am most definitely on a budget (being a broke college student will do that to you). I may just have to fork out the dough for a high-quality barrel. If I can afford it, I'm looking at Kreiger, Hart, Douglas, or Shilen. Any recommendations?

Re: Falcon Menace, Burris, EGW - Advice?

I run the Falcon Optics 4X14x44 FFP and Burris XTR medium rings on my Rem SPS Tac and it's a solid setup. I've had a few problems with getting back to a perfect zero after long range shooting (was off about an inch and 1/2 or so) but it's a good scope for the money. The rings are fantastic. Depending on your timeline, needs and budget, I'd probably opt for something a little better. If the scope is something for operational use, I'd save up and get something better. If it's for hunting/targets/fun, you should be GTG. It's a real good scope for around $400.

Re: Falcon Menace, Burris, EGW - Advice?

Thank you for the solid advice. How long was this shooting you were doing that caused you to notice a slight inaccuracy in adjustments? Because I have to travel about 50 miles to take a shot longer than 300 yards, and my property only offers around 200, 225 yard straight shots. Also, I am by NO means an expert shot, so a really high-end optic would simply outperform me.

Re: Falcon Menace, Burris, EGW - Advice?

I've owned three different Falcon scopes and have not been overly impressed with them at all. These were the earlier models (Merlin and Menace)and I have yet to try the FFP version. Based on my experience, I will not buy another unless it comes up for a really good price, and even then I don't know.

If it were me, I'd look at some others before I buy.

Any recommendations for $400 or so (or less)?

Re: Falcon Menace, Burris, EGW - Advice?

As far as the Falcon Menace goes, I have the 4-14 and I am absolutely pleased with it.
EGW bases are okay, but I have become a convert to the Weaver tactical base, it is a one piece base with full slots, not the "ears" on the EGW and it has a recoil lug. A very well made base available for about 40 bucks.
As far as the rings go, you can use a set of burris low rings with the Falcon and either the EGW or the weaver base.
I had a set of Burris low rings and I could NOT get the damn scope to stop slipping. I tried putting rosin powder in the damn things with no luck. I had another set on a different scope with no issues at all. Burris XTR's are well made, Weaver also makes some six screw tactical rings for about the same price.

Have a look at the Bushnell Elites, Vortex Vipers, and the Falcons. Once you've done that, you'll be in a better position to make your decision.
