H4895, ELD Match 178 for .308

Finally loaded up some lapua 308 tonight.

My Lyman book states that IMR 4895 with 178 gr. Amax has a Max of 42gr.

Would it be safe to load H4895 with 178 ELD Match up to that max?

Does anyone load this combo?

Yes you can. I loaded to 44+ to test for pressure (and found it) and settled on 43.6.

I was seating out longer at 2.87 (less pressure) but you will be fine to go to 42, particularly working up to it.

Very accurate combo with big nodes.

Always start low and work up. You have no idea how your barrel will handle a particular load from someone else... especially over max charge...smh

I didnt think H4895 and IMR4894 were grain for grain close as IMR4895 and Accurate 2495.

H4895 is quite a bit faster than IMR4895. Hodgdon's load data shows more than 2 grains difference between the two powders for 178gr and 180gr 308 Winchester loads. 44gr of H4895 is over book max by more than a grain and should be approached cautiously.

Try right around 41.4 or 41.6 grains seated between 2.800" to 2.810". I'll be surprised if it doesn't shoot.
