Hi I'm the son of the man who built the first XM40 rifles

Gents, a gentleman posted over on another site pertaining to this subject claiming to have worked on the original M40 project.

He seemed to be legit and was given his due.

He had some good info.

Original poster do tell your story.

If true any insight you give can be helpful.

Did you also work at Remington?

Welcome, sounds like your family has some interesting rifle lore to share going back several generations.

Curious if you can nail down a year or time frame when Remington shit the bed. Some of the 80’s and 90’s rifles were freaking shooters!

Thank you! As soon as my Dad joins me Ill have him sign up here also. Probably will be a week or two, he's getting ready to come to FL

Glad your Dad is doing well.

I remember his posts on M40Rifle.

This site has many Remington/M40 fans. You will also find many Remington haters.

I happen to be one of the former building rifles off of receivers from the time your Dad was busy in research.

You will find many Remington products here

My Remington Chuck MaWhinney over run is oictured in there somewhere........Did you have any work doing the MaWhinney run of 100 numbered rifles and the twenty over runs?

No I was moved up to engineering by that time. I kick myself for not buying one of the M40 rifles I built.

Well since I'm not there anymore, I will tell you that alot of rifles up to and including 2010 shot quite well. There are still some from 2020 that are good shooters. The problem being production was overriding quality on some calls about 2011. A good friend of mine was the quality engineer for M700 production. Remington Defense guns have been really good also. However I have a friend that bought an M24 rebuild that was a stinker at the end. Some of the production higher ups ( not naming names) would overrode quality decisions and have guns put in the box with the attitude that if the customer had a problem they'd send it back and we would send them a replacement or fix the issues .

Different time back than.

This is going to sound wrong but it was more about the man than the gear.

Not a knock on gear or guys from either era.

Just expectations have differed over time based on technical advancements in production and doctrine on using the gear.

Is there a chance that the factory will come back online or is it done for? I have a friend in Herkimer with both his wife/girlfriend (not sure) and daughter now out of work. He is a farmer and they are really hurting without many options.
