I get you guys in LE not wanting to let a criminal get away, but what punishment does one get for stealing a car, running a blue light, destroying a dozen cars and property along the way and keeping half the city from going to work because the interstate is shut down ninety days? six months? a year? It’s all good. I think the biggest issue is the American people have lost their voice when it comes to LE doing their job. It’s not the politicians that decide how much authority or what laws are enforced. The American people bestow the trust and authority to LE for public safety. The only reason you pull over when an officer stops you is because we have agreement that this is acceptable as long as the stop was legitimate and the duration was reasonable given the circumstances.
Right now, in my opinion, self-interest groups and politicians seeking votes/culture change are the ones deciding LE role in public safety. I don’t see BLM calling the PD because stolen cars are abandoned in their front yard. It’s not criminals calling in and reporting suspicious activity or even parking violations.
LE has guidelines to follow. Case law, department policy, and the public’s allowance of authority sets the guidelines. So if the majority of Americans feel that chasing is not worth the potential risk, then that’s fine with me. The caveat being that you can’t also not accept the consequences along with that decision as well. I don’t have all the answers, so I’m just merely providing an explanation from the LE side of thought process.

In my neck of the woods there's a department with snipers in fucking helicopters to take out failure to yield suspects who are also known to be an extreme danger i.e. just shot someone and drove off. It doesn't happen often, but it does happen.
If cops can't pursue fleeing suspects (think California stop) why should anyone stop?
My crazy ass state passed several measures Prop 47, 57 and ab 109 that basically says if you've got dope or a syringe with dope, walk into a best buy and walk out with an $900 tv, it's a ticket. No jail time and no mandatory drug diversion. I think the actual number is $950, but you get the idea. Retail is getting hammered and we have a barely reported epidemic of fentanyl use and od's.
If folks want to get high and steal with relatively no consequences fine, that's what my dumbass neighbors voted for. My issue is running from the PoPo in a vehicle endangering the lives of others. I don't care if dude stole a Pez dispenser or is Charles fucking Manson, fuck him, mandatory 10 years in the pokey.

The other thing y'all have to remember.....no one is running from the police because of an expired tag or because they were doing 10 over the speed limit.

My homemade car has zero power anything, the 750 carb is on a cable and responds instantly, and it handles like it's on rails. The steering linkage is racecar tight. It does, however, take some muscle to turn the wheels when the car is stopped. It's not till about 10mph that it gets easy to turn. Those wide sticky tires don't help with that either...
I never bothered with an interior, so it's all bare metal. I have often thought that I'll be the last free driver zipping past the electric/auto-drives with a tank full of explosive gasoline. I'll have to be constantly dodging, because the other car's AIs can't "see" me.
