How much neck tension on a Magnum?

I have been reloading 308 & smaller for a long time, but I just got a 300 RUM. I have a Redding full length bushing die and a Lee Factory Crimp die. I know I can experiment but would like to save time and find out what others use for neck tension in big magnums. In my 308 I find that .002-.003 works fine but I am concerned that bullets may move with tension this low. Gun is heavy barrelled and braked (APA Fat Bastard).

Re: How much neck tension on a Magnum?

If by "tension" you mean an undersized neck inside diameter, anything under about .002" is meaningless.

More stretch than that simply exceeds the elastic limits of the case alloy so seating a bullet itself will just expand and deform the necks up. The actual grip (tension) will remain the same even if you size necks down three or four times that .002".

If you load several rounds in the magazine and shoot half of them, take out the remaining rounds and check the length. Either Over All Length or base to ogive length. If I have bullet movement from recoil I usually start adding crimp. Of course you have to have recorded the length first, before you start.
