Just wanted to share a frustrating experience I had last night with my brand new Kestrel. I bought a HP Ipaq 211 PDA to run LoadBase 3 on and always had planned on buying a Kestrel 4500 with Bluetooth to use with it someday. Well thanks to the hide I managed to get one at a great price and everything was good, like a kid waiting for Christmas morning. I downloaded LB3 yesterday, opened the 4500, installed fresh new batteries, and went about the task of setting everything up but this is where it went south. I am 31 years old and love technology and have no problems setting stuff up but I literally tried for hours yesterday to connect the Kestrel with my PDA and even my laptop just to see if I could get a connection. After a few hours I finally gave up and decided to call Kestrel on Monday because it just wasn't going to happen. I woke up this morning and said screw it lets try it one last time... Turned on LB3, turned on the 4500, pushed the button and we have lift off! I have no freaking clue what has changed between last night and today but everything has synced up and is running smooth. I just wanted to share this since a lot of guys are moving to these and could have this exact problem. All I can say is that if you are having problems with the Bluetooth on you Kestrel just leave batteries in it, set it down, walk away for a while, and try it again later. Don't know why but it seems to work.

It took me about 2 hours to get a 4500BT to link, connect and stay connected to a X51. I got it though, at this point in time god forbid if I ever have to redo it again.

Does the Kestrel 4500 BT work with the application shooter? What are the benefits for the 4500 BT vs the 4500? If I am just recording the data into a book, my phone, and later into an electric data recorder, do I need BT or can I stick with the 4500NV?

If you have a Andriod phone it can be used with Shooter but not the iPhone version. As for needing it, no you do not, if you are just logging stuff for future reference then you will never benefit from having bluetooth. Where it comes into play is when you need current weather conditions uploaded quickly and you dont have the time to do it yourself like on competition courses where wind and temp changes can effect your ballistics greatly. But with all that said, if you can get a bluetooth model for a really good price then go for it.

If I had a nickel for every time I had something like this happen while programing and setting up computer gear. I've left work/school problems sit for the night and without changing a thing, the next day they run like clock work. Talk about frustrating (and joyous at the same time).

Although there is some empirical evidence that if you let a problem sit for the night, your mind will continue to work on it throughout the night while you sleep. And often the answer becomes apparent the next morning.

I did upgrade from from the ipaq 211 to a Pharos 565 (thanks again gordon) and had no issues at all getting it to connect the very first time. I have used the ketrel at the range a couple of times this week and I must say the bluetooth feature is great with the variable winds of oklahoma
