Must-watch war movies?

Watched "all quiet on the western front" and "the forgotten battle" after seeing some recommendations on this thread. Both on Netflix. Love learning about ww1&2 from different countries perspectives.

Damn, I see we've got some serious movie buffs hanging around in the Bear Pit! Thanks for all the suggestions, this really took off.

A couple honorable mentions, Glory has long been one of my favorite movies. Col. Shaw has seemed to me, from outside reading, a man of great character and integrity. Just have a ton of respect for the man. Bridge Over the River Kwai was a favorite of mine growing up! I watched it all the time --I'll have to go back and give it another watch.

All Quiet On The Western Front, I really liked as well. The story was good, the cinematography was good and learning about the war from a non-US perspective was pretty interesting.

I just watched Hornets Nest last night, that was definitely a ride. Intense, suspenseful, but not in a manufactured way. Just a whole lot of reality. When CSM Fields did roll-call for the fallen soldiers...

Anyone remember Tears of the Sun?

@sirhrmechanic I have no objections about this being moved to Movie Theater; something I have to do for that?

Someone else asked for a compilation, I'll try to put one together and edit it into my original post.

Current list is kinda tilted towards Hollywood. Try this:

Nefes: Vatan Sagolsun

Also
White Tiger 2012
Invincible /Tankers 2018
T-34 2018

Lots of Tanks …

Anyone remember Tears of the Sun?
I watched that movie. Full disclosure, I have never served. I was medically disqualified. But my friend, Lee, in early 1964 saw a sign on the peg board aboard ship (he was in the Navy) asking for people for what he thought was special services. Turned out to be special forces. In 1962, Pres. Kennedy signed the EO to change bud to bud/S. So, he made it through through the course and became a SEAL and served 3 active combat tours from 1964 to 1969, having risen to the rank of Second Class Petty Officer.

So, I learned from him the thinking of the SEAL teams. #1, accomplish the objective, regardless of obstacles.

The movie had a technical advisor and so yes, the movements of the team are correct. Also correct is in the beginning of the movie when they are returning from a mission and the captain, played buy Tom Skerritt, meets them on the flight deck to give them one more mission before dinner.

Nigeria is going through another civil war and bad guys and good guys are running around. The mission is to rescue a doctor who works for "Doctors without Borders." When they meet him, they do not salute, which is correct. They do not salute superior officers because that paints a target on the one in charge, in case the enemy is looking. It is a habit they get into.

So, the mission plan does not have clearance in nigerian air space. So, they are going to go in to an LZ, drop out. Then find her and escort her out. Back aboard ship in time for dinner.

It's going according to plan and they find her at some little hospital taking care of about 20 patients and they explain that they are here to extract her. She refuses because she cannot leave her patients. The rest of the movie is hiking out of Nigeria.

Accomplish the objective regardless of obstacles. In a real mission, she would be physically detained and searched for weapons and booby traps and identification. And then, when she pitches a bitch, the medic in the group gives her a tranq and the big guy gets her on his shoulder and they hump to the EP. Back aboard ship in time for dinner.

So, that glaring mistake in procedure stuck with me. This should have been more like a documentary.

Das Boot

Killer Angels/Gettysburg.

Celia, Jen and Donny, and the Grandkids all walked Gettysburg for a week together. During the week, I was also reading the Killer Angels. It filled in my own understanding and gave me the info to explain to the kids just what it was they were looking at.

That was a great week.

War movies can be intense and immersive, and sometimes subtitles can take away from that experience. Anyway, if you're looking for war movies without subtitles, I'd recommend checking out classics like "Saving Private Ryan" or "Black Hawk Down."

Hi Nick,

What do you think about AI?

The Wild Geese - Richard Burton, Roger Moore, Richard Harris - Available on Amazon Prime

Based on Mike Hoare. I read a few of his books.

If you want to watch an old interview on on of his Lt's. here you go. Again sub titles and they don't paint him in a very good light.

Watch this, it is easy, then do the hard work and really learn about Congo in the early 60's. After you learn that you will see the "press" is doing nothing new.

Interesting it is coming up as not available.....youtube. You really need to do some digging. I will try a link again. Take out the dots in front and behind and give it a go.

Hyena Road, A Bridge Too Far, Das Boot, The Odd Angry Shot. Those are the one that come to mind. Lots of good ones out there.
Hyena Road, that is another not real popular movie that is quite good.

This one is quite good IMHO, but gets so little coverage.

The Lost Battalion - Amazon Prime Video
An American battalion of over 500 men which gets trapped behind enemy lines in the Argonne Forest in October 1918 France during the closing weeks of World War I.

Here's a good history video on the battle:

For me, it's mostly been about WWII movies. That's what I grew up watching.

Top 10
Kelly's Heroes "It's a mother beautiful bridge... and it's gonna be there."
Sahara "a little cheese, a little wine... a little onion"
Von Ryan's Express
The Devil's Brigade
Bataan
Heaven Knows Mr. Allison
In Harms Way
To Hell And Back
12 o'clock High
The Wings of Eagles "I'm gonna move that toe"

Battle of the Bulge
The Sea Bees
The Battle of Britton
The Sands of Iwo Jima "Nobody starts OUT to get blind, stinking, staggering, falling down drunk."
Midway
Back to Bataan
A Bridge Too Far
Das Boot
Hell in the Pacific
The Enemy Below
Tora, Tora, Tora
30 Seconds Over Tokyo
Guadalcanal Diary
Flying Leathernecks
Flying Tigers
A Walk in the Sun
They Were Expendable
A Bridge Too Far
The Longest Day
Where Eagles Dare
Bridge on the River Kwai
The Best years of our lives
Wake Island
Patton
Guns of Navarone
The Great Escape
The Dirty Dozen
The Big Red One
Sink The Bismark

I'm sure there are others... but these are most of what I can remember.

I also like the historical movies like Master and Commander, Braveheart, Patriot, Zulu, and the like.

Movies from Korea like Mash, and The bridges at Toko Ri were good, as was the one about the Chosin campaign.

Vietnam movies are a mixed bag of hit and miss. Deer Hunter, We Were Soldiers, and Bat 21 are standouts. The Green Berets is always an old standard, but not really as well done.

A semi-modern movie that revisited Vietnam I liked (at the time, kinda corny now) was Uncommon Valor. Loved the story line a lot. Would love to see this one redone with better acting, and cinematography.

The more modern movies 1917, Saving Private Ryan, The Band of Brothers miniseries, Tears in the Sun, Lone Survivor, Dunkirk, these kind of works are generally very well done. I've liked most of them.

If you can see only one... Watch Kelly's Heroes. ALL the stars, ALL the action, ALL the comedy.

The 9th Company (9 rota)

Watch it in Russian, not the English dubbed version.

Absolutely fantastic film. Another one where you’re watching and just going “fuck…”

This is not a "movie" but is quite good. The "wild geese" movie that was quoted where I linked the interview with the greman, the one played by Hardy Kruger is about this basic conflict.

This is another one that is hidden by youtube, if you want to watch it I would suggest in doing so. I need to save it off, as I don't think it will be there for long, but it has been on there for years.

I am going to do the same thing with the link as I really think it will come up as "not available".

I will say it is a VERY STRONG video and you really need to think long and hard if you want anyone around when you watch it. Lots of real "war" going on. With all the mess of real war, so many things say they don't pull punches, this one really does not.

Same as with the other, remove the ....... if the link does not work.

the video link did not work, and I did not say what it was about. The Congo early 60's. And the total mess there.
