I have a new rifle and after examining the barrel, the rifling has bronze residue on it. Is this normal? Do i need to clean it prior to firing? TIA

Re: new barrel with copper on rifling?

Almost every manufacturer fires at least one proof load through the firearm before they box it up. Most don't clean the barrel after the proof loads are shot. So what you see is normal. I clean all new firearms prior to shooting just to get out any foreign matter that may have gotten into the bore during transit and storage once it leaves the manufacturer. Usually all that amounts to is a tiny amount of dust.
