Not sure how much to chop my barrel...

I have a Rem 700 with the factory 26" varmint taper barrel in .308. It shoots well, and it's favorite loads for are 185 Bergers. I am waiting on a form 4 for a new can, and I want to get it threaded. I am going to get the barrel shortened when I get it threaded and I need some advice. I don't know how short to have it cut to. I have read that 20"-22" is optimal for the .308, but I don't know if shortening it will cause stabilization issues. I'm concerned with the 185's and the 1:12 twist. They stabilize great now, and are very accurate, but I'm not so sure it will be that way if I get 6" lopped off. I definitely don't want a baffle strike. I guess I could work up another load for it, but I have tons of these bullets and like their accuracy and terminal performance. What do y'all think??

If you only have One then I'd Say go 20" Threaded. It's the Perfect Balance vs Performance. I happen to have more than one .308 Bolt action and my Current Favorite is the Newly Purchased AAS-SD in a 16" .308. So far it can do anything my longer guns can do but with Better Handling and a hell of a lot shorter and compact package.

Congrats on your new AAS-SD 16" .308; I do not own a short barrel .308 and I have never seen a test done with that length. How far this 16" barrel can shoot accurately?
Thanks and good shooting.

Thanks for the kind words! As far as performance test wise I've only gone out to 300 yards with the 16" but it was every bit as accurate as my 20" out to that distance. Below is a video of our very own lowlight shooting a 18" GAP to 1,000 yards repeatedly. Now keep in mind this is a Custom Rifle and Professional Shooter. But it does proof however that shorter barrel rifles if setup correct can have the potential capability to go fairly Long Range.

Now how often you get the chance to do that and need to stretch that far if completely up to your situation. I rarely have the opportunity to go 1,000 yards so I'd rather have the Compact and Handiness of a Shorter Barrel not to mention it is just plain Looks COOL.

Here is a Picture Thread that has some great looking short barreled rifles which inspired me to get one too.

Thanks for this great video, lowlight shows great skills with George's Gladius, winning combo.
If you do not mind, let me know on how the accuracy goes, whenever you will have a chance to stretch it. I live in Vegas and we are able to shoot at whatever distances (ELR) on any given day. I shoot mostly .308 but my Buds have .338 LM, 7mm SAUM and other ELR calibers, so the sky is (almost) the limit.
Enjoy your new rifle.
Good shooting.
