So I guy I played football with in high school here in Missouri was shot two nights ago ( Story here ). He was shot in the head, and is now in a coma. This guy is at least 6'7", 300lbs or better, played college ball, etc. So not the kind of guy to get mugged, I wouldn't think. I don't know of any details other than what the paper listed, but aren't head shots somewhat strange for a robbery gone wrong, or anything along those lines? I'd always heard that the head shot was more of an intentional sort of thing, either on a personal level, sending a message, etc? From those of you with experience with this sort of deal, any thoughts? Or (from the limited info) is this more likely than not just a random, wrong place/wrong time sort of deal? Thanks, and on a lighter side, Merry Christmas everyone, stay safe...

Not LEO but one of my mom's cousins was shot by a guy that had just robbed a convenience store. Her cousin picked up a second job working nights filling newspaper machines. BG shot him 3X. IIRC 1 round hit his stomach, 1 in the chest, and 1 in the head. He never had a chance and in that case the piece of shit wasn't sending a message he just didn't want to get identified... Apparently he'd never heard of a security camera.

Re: Picking you LEO's brains about shootings...

Without any more information I see you making the assumption that the head shot was intentional, rather than there being a shot fired which happened to strike him in the head.

Re: Picking you LEO's brains about shootings...

Just from my experience most $hitheads aren't experienced shooters. Generally, when they point a weapon they point it at what they are looking at. I'd say a large number of robberies and/or assaults have the suspect pointing a handgun at the victims head because they are looking at the victim's face, it is intimidating, controlling an it's what they see on television. With your friend being that large in nature I would venture to day the suspect was trying to intimidate and control.

Re: Picking you LEO's brains about shootings...

There is not nearly enough information to make speculations on this matter; however....

...most of the muggings/robberies/beatings i've had experience with involved either persons of a "less formidable" appearance or smaller numbers, persons of altered consciousness (chemical or mental defect), or persons of geographic opportunity (isolated and/or "bad part of town"). Given the time listed, I would guess the last two (or all) qualities my have come into play.

Re: Picking you LEO's brains about shootings...

Yeah, I can't remember where I'd heard that, maybe watching too much Criminal Minds, hahaha... But this was in a motel parking lot, in St. Charles, MO. Right next to a Bass Pro, so not the worst part of town by any means, and St. Charles is an old town anyhow. The police/media aren't releasing much on this at all, so I'm just trying to pick out any little pieces I can. Extremely little to go on, I know. Thanks again.

- Truly random violence is very rare. There's usually a reason for it, even if it's a stupid reason.

Hope this helps you at least a little bit.

Good list right there. Can't agree more especially the "- Victims often unknowingly create the circumstances and set the scene for their own murder"

Re: Picking you LEO's brains about shootings...

Although I can't comment on the specific example above, I will say:

1) People under stress often shoot high (although in my experience they also shoot low).

2) People often hit what they are looking at in addition to what they are aiming at.

Which is why there is a high probability in an armed confrontation that you may be hit in the hand or arm holding your weapon - the guy shooting at you may be looking at it.

And that's why it's a really good idea to practice one-handed gun manipulation, including loading and clearing malfunctions.

It is also a good idea to practice not being in the back of a hotel at 2:15 in the morning.

Re: Picking you LEO's brains about shootings...

Yeah, I found out a little more. He'd won a large (not sure how big) amount of money at the casino across the street (open nearly 24 hours, and all the other bars shut down at 1, hence the reason for still being in that area at 2), and had been followed. Somehow the shooter got him to pull over and the person walked up to him and shot him in the face (not much more info but it's all I got from a friend who emailed me). Apparently the swelling in his brain has gone down and he's in stable but critical in the hospital, and still in the coma. Thanks for all the input guys. Guess there's a reason St. Louis is listed at the top of the charts in violent crime cities...
