I agreed that there was a mistake and tried to pay. I wound up having to file a case in tax court just to have a judge tell them to let me pay. It was the craziest thing I had seen. Then, when I was finally allowed to pay, they were still charging interest. They told me it would still accrue interest while the check was in the mail. I finally had to create some sort of online account to pay. After that I got a notice saying I had overpaid and would receive a check. About two weeks later I got another letter saying that my audit was concluded and that I owed them exactly the amount they said I had overpaid.
