Advanced Marksmanship Shot group at 600 yds

Re: Shot group at 600 yds

How about some details on how you were using the ND-5, I've seen the ad and it says "Full night vision up to 250 yards", so are you just able to see the laser light through the scope or a night vision? Just for my uninformed mind, please...

However, this is very cool!

Thanks,

Seekers

Re: Shot group at 600 yds

Actually that was my 15 year on the gun shooting. The image was not perfect, we had to tighten the beam on the laser. I do not have the mount yet to sight the laser in, was just holding the laser. Should work great for night shooting. For $300 dollars if it last not bad. This is a cheap way to shoot at night.

Re: Shot group at 600 yds

So you were hand holding the laser and you could see it well enough at 600 yds with the regular scope?

That sounds pretty nice, are you saying you want to mount it to the rifle?

Congrats on some more nice shooting,

Seekers

Re: Shot group at 600 yds

I set the laser on a blanket and was guide in by the shooter. I will mount to a rifle maybe no that one. For yotes, hogs this should work great or even some night shooting steel.

Re: Shot group at 600 yds

I just found this thread and think it is great the progress you have made throughout the thread. More impressive is getting the boys involved. Good stuff...........

Re: Shot group at 600 yds

I find more enjoyment in watching my boys shoot. I have an 8 yr old I have working with. The biggest thing is just let them shoot alot. My really like the night shooting.

Re: Shot group at 600 yds

Did some shooting at 1100 yards on Mon. Got the crops out of the fields. Thought I would test out the 123 Lapuas at long range. My son and I was shooting with a 10 mph wind. He shot the first 3 and I shot the last three. The 260 just keeps preforming. I was going to shoot a little faster but I had to wait for the sound to bounce back from the steel. Here is a video of the shooting.

Re: Shot group at 600 yds

Shot today at 1265 yards with the 123 Lapuas. These bullets just keep preforming. Took a video but could not hear the steel or see hits. Not worth posting. I was shooting at a 12" LV steel target. 36.5 ups and 5.25 wind call. I think I like these as good as the 139s.

Re: Shot group at 600 yds

Thanks. Here is something new. I purchase a video spotting camera called Target-Cam. Shot with it today at 700 yards. I thought the reception was not all that good but the transmitter was pointing a little off. I will try again with the proper setup.

My first round was off because I didn't bring my turrets back to zero from the other day. My second shot was corrected.

Re: Shot group at 600 yds

Great thread, Rich - I've been following for a while, and it's great to see how you and the boys have been successful in so many ways.

Re: Shot group at 600 yds

Having one of my 260s cut down to 20" . Making a lighter carrying rifle. The AI fully loaded is a bit more weight than I would like. I will post some results on the 20'" barrel length on the 260. I will be shooting the 123 lapua's moly. I think I might even put a lesser power scope on to lighten even more.

Re: Shot group at 600 yds

Well got the 260 back. Sighted the gun in at 100 yards. Stepped out to 800 yards and shot the 139 lapuas. Here is my Moas at 800 yards 19 on come ups.
Temp. 22 degrees out.
I don't think I have lost much going to a 20" barrel with a 260. Shoots like a dream. I made a video but my wife wiggled the camera every shot. Could post but not very good.
Bottom line is. This is a sweet rifle with a 20" barrel, badger brake, suregon action, jewell trigger.

Re: Shot group at 600 yds

Gradous supervised build .308, me shooting. His weathered hand holding the $1 for scale.

Re: Shot group at 600 yds

Thanks, all the credit goes to Robert. I just watched him like he was a Shaman and tried not to screw anything up.

Re: Shot group at 600 yds

Shot today a few rounds with the 20" 260. Ended up at 32 moa at 1100 yards. It was about 25 degrees out with a cold wind. Not bad for a 20" barrel. Here is a quick vid of the gun shooting. Hardly any recoil.

Re: Shot group at 600 yds

what velocity you getting with that 20 in barrel? I am in the process of building a 260 and am hesitant to go below 24 in...even tho, like you, I dont want a heavy rig with the AICS stock.

what cartridge OAL?

have you tried the 130 jlk's in the 260?

I am also with you and absolutely think shooting a rifle that weighs 80lbs (rail gun)with a 3" dia barrel and all you do is line up the sights then just pull trigger is BS...dont see the point in that, I spose to each, their own...

anyways, keep up the posts and updates.

Re: Shot group at 600 yds

Off a Sammia reamer for a 260. I seat the bullets at 2.333 to 2.400 on the o-give. I have had great luck with serval 260s. This seems to be the magical length from my reamer.
In the next couple of days I will post the results of the chrono #s. I will also post the group shot with it. The wind has to settle down more. I think most will like it. Base on my dope shot. I think most will be surprise.

Re: Shot group at 600 yds

I shot the 260 over the chrono today. Surprising results. I will shoot again at longer distances to confirm results. But this is kinda where I thought I was from previous shooting. Here is the video.

Re: Shot group at 600 yds

Here is the results from shooting today at 800 yards. The wind was blowing constant 5 mph with guest to 17mph and then nothing. Weird shooting conditions. But the results was what the chrono showed. I don't take the chrono results to serious until confirm by shooting data. Hope this helps with making a decision on barrel length.
A fair number with the 123s should be around 2950 to 3025. I'am shooting a hot load in both guns. I would think there is not a lot you would give up by cutting the barrel. I think the optima barrel length maybe 20 to 22" for the 260. The extra length does get you some but not much extra speed.

Re: Shot group at 600 yds

Haven't posted in a while. Working with my youngest on shooting with mildots and holding for wind calls. Not to bad for the first time. I set him up at 600 yards out of the bed of the truck and had him dial the turrets. The next step was explaining the there is no difference between the turret and holding. Great thing about kids have no boundaries on shooting. If you watch, you will notice him spotting where he hits and correcting for the difference.

Re: Shot group at 600 yds

Thoughts on shooting off a rest and rear bag for the youngest. I will be honest, I did not care for it much. Keep him shooting on bipods or let him start shooting some with a rest.

Any Ideas???

Re: Shot group at 600 yds

I did this the other day. This target was used by myself and a friend of mine that day for sighting in and string scoring. Later in the evening when the wind had died down, I shot 5 for group.

Re: Shot group at 600 yds

.308 175 SMK lapua brass and 43.5 grns varget

Re: Shot group at 600 yds

Yes I have shot in 4 of them. There isn't a big following here in Ga. There are at most 8 f class shooters at the matches I attend and the rest are match/palma shooters.

Re: Shot group at 600 yds

8 better than none. They only have 6 local here. The rest is about 8 hour drive but they have a 1000 yard match once a month.
The matches mix it up some.
Is the matches 600 or 1000?

Don't know where in Ga. you are located but in Pearson, Ga. at Parkers gun shop they have a tournament every month. 600 yds BR match. They have them the first weekend of every month.

Shoot me a PM if your interested

Re: Shot group at 600 yds

dar, our matches are at 600. It is a 3x600 format. Three relays of 20 shots for record alternating between shooting, pulling and marking targets in the pits, and scoring. To shoot 1000, Id have to go to Ft. Benning which is about 150 miles. I definitely want to do this sometime.

B man, I shoot out at Riverbend Gun Club in Dawsonville. I appreciate the offer. I may do that sometime. I don't have a benchrest quality rifle, but I don't embarrass easily either.

B man we are having a 2 day event this weekend (8th and 9th) if you are interested. http://www.rbgc.org/hipower/2011/Mountain%20Mid-range.pdf

Re: Shot group at 600 yds

Sounds like a pretty good range. Some don't have pits and you shot then go see. With the pits you kind of see how they are and you are shooting. The 1000 yard match don't sound to far. Try to make one. It would be worth the drive. A friend of mine drove to WIsconsin and shot his first time at 1000 yard match and won it. Great guy very humble but is a good shooter.

We are kind of down in a bowl with trees on both sides. The wind is kind of hard to read here. Sometimes the flags are pointing towards each other. There is some sort of swirling going on. There are 200 and 300 yard berms that cause updrafts.
I do a lot of shoot and go see myself because it is hard to find a partner. The one guy I can count on is a small bore shooter.

Re: Shot group at 600 yds

The good thing is. Shooting in harder conditions is actually better than shooting on a calm day. Nebraska the wind blows 359 days. That will make you a better shot than most.

Re: Shot group at 600 yds

Allen, I just saw ur reply. I would have liked to make it. Don't worry about not having a br rig neither do I. I shoot my bone stock REM 5r and have done pretty good so far. 2 first place and one 2nd and I'm no bob lee swagger by any stretch. Just lucky at wind calling. It's in the middle of a cultivated field behind the gun shop so wind can be an nuisance. It's 3 relays at 10 shots.

Sporter class- weight limit 11 lbs
T/r- weight limit 17 lbs.
Open- 22 or 24lbs not sure

Re: Shot group at 600 yds

Started mess with subsonic ammo in the 308. Shooting the 175 match kings from Southwest Ammo.

I deleted my google account and I guess Youtube gets deleted with it. Sorry about the videos. Try to get it back up but could not fiqure out how to reinstate it.

Re: Shot group at 600 yds

Shot this on New Years day on the 500M silhouette range.
I shot several groups that day and this was the best one.

half MOA is tough to beat.

Re: Shot group at 600 yds

To the original poster; I'd like to point out that the bed of a pickup, although seemingly a stable platform, is actually not a stable platform. Especially with any breeze blowing. The bed of your truck is on spring steel supported by air-filled rubber tires.

It is my opinion that only the ground will support the groups you are seeking.

Pleased for you that you are grouping a lot better. Just thought I'd offer what may not be obvious to many. I often glass from the bed of my truck and at higher magnification one can plainly see that the truck bed responds to ANY vibration.

Keep up the good shooting, bro.

Re: Shot group at 600 yds

The truck bed is not the best place to shoot. On some days in the freezing cold, I would shoot out of it to block the wind. The groups would not be as good but was a lot warmer. The ground is prefered.

Re: Shot group at 600 yds

Here is a comparison of sound of a 308 subsonic and a 22lr subsonic suppressed.
