Thank you Ray, I'm one who's asked you about the Ultra 5
This is really good info and I'm glad you tested for Shooters Ear (SE)
30 Cal Ultra 5 at SE 133, 128,134,132,134 Avg- 132.2
6.5 Ultra 5 at SE 127 130 128 128 Avg 128.25
This shows that a can designed for 6.5mm bullets will average about 4db quieter than a 30 cal can, that is surprising (a general rule of thumb is the average person can perceptibly hear a difference every 3 db); however, what is more surprising is how well your Ultra 5 30 cal works with the 6.5 Creedmoor, an average of 132.2 db is really good from that short of a can!
By comparison, you did a similar test at Shooters ear with a 300 Win Mag loaded hot with the following results:
Ultra 5 141,140.5,138.5,140.5,140.5 Avg 140.2
Ultra 7 135,137.25,137.5,138.25,136.75 Avg 137
Ultra 9 133,133.5,133.25,133.5,133.5 Avg 133.35
This shows that a 30 cal Ultra 5 on a 6.5 Creedmoor is quieter than a 30 cal Ultra 9 on a 300WM. Obviously the 300WM packs more punch than a 6.5CM but it helps with understanding how well suppressors suppress when using different cartridges and calibers.
This has now got me back to rethinking a Ultra 5 vs. Ultra 7, I was leaning towards the Ultra 7 but didn't realize the Ultra 5 did so well with 6.5CM...
