Tikka bolt shroud/other upgrades

Is it worth upgrading to one of the aftermarket metal ones? I've ALWAYS been skiddish of the plastic there, but I'm not really sure it's as much of a problem as I thought at first (haven't we all gotten more comfortable with plastic on our weapons? glocks, usps, magpul, etc)?

What other upgrades, stock aside, are good for the tikka?

Also, does the tikka trigger trap moisture like the newer rem 700 triggers?

Thanks

edit: I know about this thread too, and just wanted to remind people of it who may not know http://www.snipershide.com/forum/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Board=17&Number=1323704

Re: Tikka bolt shroud/other upgrades

I upgraded the bolt shroud on my T3 Tactical. I just read too many posts about the plastic one breaking. The other thing I had done that really should be number one for any Tikka shooter is a CDI Precision DBM that converts over to AICS mags. This is especially true if chambered in 223, as the factory mags are way more expensive, hold fewer rounds and won't allow good loads with longer bullet designs like the 75 Amax and 77 SMK.

Re: Tikka bolt shroud/other upgrades

I finally am getting a rifle in my #1 favorite cartridge: 6.5x55. I came to 'modern' rifles after spending years with milsurps where I ran mostly swedish mausers.

So my tikka is a "medium" action which would likely mess up most of those aftermarket goodies.

Re: Tikka bolt shroud/other upgrades

Tikka replaced my first plastic shroud after it cracked. When the second one became loose after about 20 rounds I replaced it with the machined aftermarket one.
I think they sell a combo with the shroud and an oversize bolt knob.
The folks in Australia that manufacture the stuff has a dealer in Florida. That's where I got the shroud. They're great folks to deal with and they shipped it the same day I called.

Re: Tikka bolt shroud/other upgrades

I have the Tikka T3 Varmint in 223 Remington. I have the shroud and bolt handle combination on order from HSS in Australia. Should be arriving any day now. The CDI Precision DBM is also a very good upgrade as previously stated because of the capability to use the AICS mags to allow longer COAL in the 223 caliber. I'm replacing the stock on mine with KRG's Whiskey 3 Chassis as soon as it becomes available, which will also allow me to use the AICS magazines.

Re: Tikka bolt shroud/other upgrades

People keep mentioning that there is a dealer in Florida for the bolt shrouds/handles. But all I can find is references to Fortis from a few years ago in Ohio as well as the Australians on Ebay.

Anyone have a direct link to the Floridians?

Re: Tikka bolt shroud/other upgrades

I ordered one of the southern tactical ones from down under direct. Their florida dealer did not have any. They were great to deal with. Parts was super quality, I got the black but they have several colors. It is an exact replica of the crappy plastic one. Cost was 45 plus 15 to ship, 60 total. I had it a week after order. Put it on my tikka 300 win. Works great. Z

Re: Tikka bolt shroud/other upgrades

We've started to carry the Bolt Shrouds from HSS in Australia and we'll be getting the ones from Alutek in Sweden as well. So far we don't have any of the oversize bolt handles but if guys want them we'll get some in.

They're not on the site yet because the HSS knobs just came in and we've been working on some other stuff lately, but you can contact us if you want one. Price is 48.50 for the shroud. Thanks,
Justin

What he said. That is where my bolt shroud came from.
As for the CDI DBM, it would work on the 6.5x55.
Neat caliber. I've considered one before but never did the deed.

Yeah, my view on it is

30-06::308 as 6.5x55::260

though less flexible
