I made it out to the range today with the Surgeon Scalpel .243 to test out the newly installed Badger FTE muzzle brake.
The rain stopped long enough for me to do some shooting...but the wind was really blowing. You can hear it in the video. Avg., wind speed around 8-10 mph. and guest probably around 12-15 mph. Not a good day to be shooting 1000 yards....but as my old company Master Sgt. use to say back in my Army days...FIDO!!

Below is a video...been trying to learn how to use the video editing software (Sony Vegas 10) and took two cameras out today so I could get different views. Anyways....

Take care,Stan

Re: Video Range Report 1000 yards w/Surgeon .243

25" barrel. Velocity is about 2990 avg. With this load I have single digit ES and SD.

I tried RL-17...got about 150 fps faster, but the accuracy was very inconsistent and I ruined a bunch of Lapua brass. So I went back to the H4350.

I also shoot H4350 in my 6XC and it shoots very well in that rifle too.

Take care,Stan

Man stan that brake really makes me want one on my .243 now. Either that are a nice can to quite it down and make recoil nil. Sweet stick by the way.

Re: Video Range Report 1000 yards w/Surgeon .243

its lookin more and more like 243 will be next chambering. i think i could def get the wife on one of these.243 is just a great round and of course im a little bias. i love my surgeon 300. they build top notch product. it takes that part of equipment out of the equation.oh ps have to get a vid of the misses on the rifle

great shootin as always stan, picture in picture is nice touch seems like you would see alot more of the guys doin this

Re: Video Range Report 1000 yards w/Surgeon .243

The barrel is a 1:8 twist. Turn around time from Surgeon for the brake was about 2 weeks including shipping.

The PIP requires two cameras....so I am sure that is why not to many people do it. I am sure the other folks at the range thought I was filming for NatGeo or something with all the tripods and camera set up!

Great shooting Stan! Great equipment too!

Thanks for the video.

Re: Video Range Report 1000 yards w/Surgeon .243

Thanks guys.

The camera for the long range (target shots) work is a Sony HDR-CX550 camcorder. Has 64 gig of flash memory built in. Very compact.

For the shots of the rifle and myself...I just used Amber's Nikon D5000.

And speaking of Amber....video of her being posted right now. So check my youtube vids a bit latter.

TAke care,Stan

Re: Video Range Report 1000 yards w/Surgeon .243

Good shooting.

Looking up the model to the Sony CX550 camera it shows it only having a 10x optical zoom. Your zoom on that target seemed a hell of a lot more than 10x and the quality didnt degrade like digital zoom. Any inputs on that?

Re: Video Range Report 1000 yards w/Surgeon .243

Well the optical zoom is kinda funny. It is 10X in still PICTURE mode....then 14X in VIDEO mode.

In the video above of the target that is in the digital zoom range. Around 100X. The digital zoom tops out at 120X and you get a LOT of noise all the way topped out. So I try to stop around 80-100X.

It is a fun little camcorder. Being a flash storage type it is really light weight and compact.

Take care,Stan

Re: Video Range Report 1000 yards w/Surgeon .243

^^^Thanks for the info. Still very impressive for 14x. I am looking at a few Sony cams that have 22-25x optical zoom for around $400-500. Cant beat those prices for HD and such high optical zoom. Makes you wonder why we have to pay $3500 for 25x scope and it doesnt even have any electronics etc

Be sure to check out those $400-500 range camcorders before buying one. I too wanted a higher power optical zoom. But then I looked in the $500 price range and once I played with them and checked them out I discovered the zoom quality even being optical was not that great.

I really liked the Cannon HFS20 and almost bought that one over the Sony. But I talked with a gent who had one and said that it really sucked down the batteries.

If you shop around you can find the Sony for around $800 online. I bought mine from here: https://www.fumfie.com/product/173.13/HDRCX550V_Sony_HDR_CX550V_64GB_HD_Handycam_Camcorder_

About $200 cheaper then BestBuy and most online retailers.
