Being from the Seattle area, we get to enjoy The Blue Angles every year at Seafair, which is awesome. F-18's 50 above the water...gotta love it!

Upon returning from the sandbox on the USS Tarawa, the AV-8B Harrier performed high speed passes around the ship for the audience. The sound of the plane being so close and ripping thru the air got me so pumped up. AMAZING!!!

Whats your favorite experience?

Re: Whats the best fighter jet fly by you've seen?

I used to work in a building on airport grounds, so when the air show would come to town we'd get to watch the Blue Angels practice all week. The cool part was our building was on the far side of the runway away from where the spectators were, so they would buzz our building pretty good and we had roof access.

As cool as the F/A-18 are, the coolest part is the year they had an F-117 swing by. I was told that they don't usually land them at "insecure" locations for security reasons, but that year they parked it within 50 yards of our building. Try as we might to get a closer look, we kept getting waved off by guys with m16s.

This is as close as I could get:

It's pretty awesome being on top of a five story building when you're getting buzzed by jets at low altitude.

going thru the sound barrier in the back seat of an F4 Phantom doing about 1,100 MPH, 250' above the desert near China Lake Ca. then zoooom climb to 30,000' doing slow rolls all the way up, then joining in with the other F4's and doing simulated dog fighting for about 20 minutes, i have many other back seat experiences in F4's and other Navy two seater aircraft, 25 years working on them got me a few back seat rides from pilots who appreciated my work and dedication to my job as a jet engine mechanic.

Re: Whats the best fighter jet fly by you've seen?

F22's are pretty cool to watch flyby. P51 about caused me to mess my pants with joy one time. A-10's always excite me.
The best I've ever seen though, was a B-1B about 1000' AGL on full burner ripping through the Baghlan-I Jadid Valley in Afghanistan. MAN that made me feel better!

Re: Whats the best fighter jet fly by you've seen?

F/A-18 at Great Georgia Airshow- .9 Mach, 100ft. over the runway and the right atmospheric conditions to create a compression disc. Really awesome!

Re: Whats the best fighter jet fly by you've seen?

Mine have all been at airshows or sporting events but this is a good one:

Re: Whats the best fighter jet fly by you've seen?

My best was an FA-18 that buzzed me at about 100ft off the deck out at sea. I didn't see him coming and only saw him leave. It was then it registered that I couldn't hear him, just as the thought went through my mind the sound caught up to me. The friggin' BOOM almost had me jump out of my skin. Damn Brown Shoe!

Re: Whats the best fighter jet fly by you've seen?

I have two. First one ws an A-10 on hill top 409 FT.Irwin. Fly so close we all waved to each other ( him and my squad). Pretty cool. The second was when I was talking to Mike R frome Tac Ops. I was on my deck when two F -18s few over. Must have been about 100 ft over my head. Loud as a mother f'er. Also, the president's helos few over my house( map of the earth). Holy crap they were loud and shook the house. I know he wasn't on them because there was 3 of them together. There were 3 blackhawks with his helos.

Re: Whats the best fighter jet fly by you've seen?

Crash Hill at Irwin and the Wart Hogs coming by after shooting up at the live fire range was cool.
Saw an F15 do a vertical takeoff from the NASA runway at Redstone. The controller told him he was cleared for takeoff direct to 10 thousand feet and a heading for his departure southeast (back to Eglin).

Re: Whats the best fighter jet fly by you've seen?

On board the USS Constellation in 1985, we were off the coast of HI. Saw a black plume on the horizon and a few seconds later an F-4 Phantom blasted by at about 80 feet (not much higher than we were on the flight deck), and about a hundred yards out.

I saw the "cone" off its nose of it breaking the sound barrier.

Loud bastard.

Re: Whats the best fighter jet fly by you've seen?

I remember, many years ago, speaking with a German Tornado pilot after watching his flight demonstration at an airshow. He had followed an F18 which did a high-speed pass a few hundred feet above and in-line with the runway. I asked him what had gotten into him. He said he had gotten tired of the other pilots telling him that the Tornado was a 'dog' at low altitudes. The airshow authorization had limited him to a never-exceed airspeed of 500 knots, but with no notation as to any 10,000 foot ceiling. So, he said, he remembered seeing 490 knots when he placed the aircraft in ground effect over the runway; and needed no forward stick to hold it there.

Re: Whats the best fighter jet fly by you've seen?

I was able to see quite a few airshows from behind the "ropes" while in the Navy. The Blue Angels deserve their reputation.

Out here on the beach they are known from some incredible stunts while practicing too.

But I think this one has to take the cake. No, not a jet but a fighter.

Re: Whats the best fighter jet fly by you've seen?

This fly by wasn't a fighter, but it's something I'll never forget. When I was about twelve I was staying at a hotel outside of Boston near the Logan airport. I just happen to be standing out on the balcony around 8pm when a B2 made a very low fly by. And I mean very low, it was banking when it went by, and from the angle it almost seemed as if I was looking down on it. It was also dusk, so the sky was fairly dark which just made it that much more awesome.

As a kid I was obsessed with military aviation, so I nearly shit myself when that thing just randomly flew infront of me. The next morning I heard a bunch of the pilots in the elevator talking about it, apparently it was a scheduled thing. I just happen to be in the right place at the right time.

Re: Whats the best fighter jet fly by you've seen?

F-18s in Mosul, Iraq during the invasion prior to the 101st ABN taking over the city. There was a riot going on and a pair of Hornets helped dispurse the crowd with a low level pass with a sonic boom. It was outstanding.

Re: Whats the best fighter jet fly by you've seen?

well... in Panama once I thought that an afterburner takeoff at night was cool....

that was until I watched an A-10 do a run on a T-34 and then come back around for another run on the poor bastards

Re: Whats the best fighter jet fly by you've seen?

My dad was stationed at Edwards and worked on the X-15 project. What a thrill to meet the pilots, watch the engineers wrenching, and to see that thing fly over head. the Air Shows were top notch.
Met Scott Crossfield, had my hair ruffled by Col Yeager, and crawled around in the B-52, while the guys were working on joining the X plane to the wing.
When we were kids, we knew every single plane in the inventory. Dad flew in the 52, taking photos from a blister in the side just aft of the X15.

Re: Whats the best fighter jet fly by you've seen?

Sitting on a ridge above the Columbia River in central Washington, and watching three B52s fly almost straight at me from the east. They actually flew over the ridge one canyon south of me, so low they were only visible through the gaps in the timber. Shortly after that, they flew through the Gorge at or below clifftop level, looked like two in formation and one slightly above and behind.
I've been buzzed by A6s and various F-whatevers while fishing the Columbia, but that always looked like fun. Watching those BUFFs flying that low, around the curves in the river, looked like work. They're so big, it looked like they weren't really going fast, and the rumble of that many jet engines so close together was gutshaking.
I've seen a video that looks like it was taken from the same ridge, about the same time, where the B52 clears the ridge by 30 feet. Really. I've often wondered if I was watching that being filmed.
I was going to post a link to it, but the examples are linked to the crash at Fairchild that killed the crew.

Re: Whats the best fighter jet fly by you've seen?

A few years back I was coyote hunting south of the Smokey Hill Bombing range, as I was sitting in a clump of grass the ground started to tremble...a few seconds later a B-52 flying nap of the earth making a run on the bombing range blew by with its bomb bay doors open....I about shit myself...certainly wasn't expecting that...my buddy down in the canyon started screaming "Holy Shit! Holy Shit! Jesus Fn Christ! What was that?

Low Warthog passes were weekly events when I was living in North Central PA back in the 80s. The bridge (and that river stretch) that I lived about two blocks from was apparently a dead ringer for some span in Eastern Europe that was on a short list to go down PDQ if the balloon went up. They'd come in over the span, low, southwest to northeast, and then break right and start to climb at just about what must have been MFT right over the house. Beautiful to see, but loud and just about shorts-filling if you weren't ready for it.

Re: Whats the best fighter jet fly by you've seen?

This wasn't a jet but one afternoon abt 1:30 i came up a hill and saw a single engine fall between two interstate bridges. Stopped car and walked over and oilot fot out and lit a cig which i crusned in his face becausr of leaking av, gas He smwlled like he was drinking. Cops came and found an emptu pint inside. His statement to me was he ran out or fuel and was trying to make a corn field ant 1 /4 mile away. Cops arrested him and the plane was trucked out in pieces that was in 1977 i think. MM

Re: Whats the best fighter jet fly by you've seen?

Fully Admitting Bias on this one.

My favorite fly by was 2006 Opening day at US Cellular Field in Chicago.
Just coming off the WS championship they dropped the banners and unrolled an outfield sized American flag for the Anthem.

Timing it up perfectly with the end of the Anthem 5 F18's dipped tail into the stadium and I swear I felt jet blast.
Ok, I didn't but it was cool, and I had something irritating my eyes at the time so they may or may not have been watering, I'll never tell.

Those fly boys from Great Lakes Naval Station gave a nice show.

Good call, I did "mis" remember the details.
And it wasn't the ring ceremony, funny enough the next vid after the one you linked was the day.

The one with the flag. Opening day.

Also, there were only two planes. Man, time to check my meds. lol

If I may offer an excuse, I do go to as many games as I can, I probably have melded the flybys together in my memory over the years.

I swear they flew from the pad in Gurnee, but Apparently not. Thanks for the info.

Re: Whats the best fighter jet fly by you've seen?

The deer stalking ground I have is a few k's out from an Army range in Northumberland

I was sitting in a bush when I saw a Typhoon zipping over the hills coming out from the range. Pretty cool, first one I had seen, next second another fucker wheels out from the bottom of the hill underneath me with the 'burners on. Clean pants time, but i had a pleasant 10 minutes watching the dogfight.

Also had an F15E at the same height on the way in to the range.

A decent distraction when the deer are elsewhere

Same type of deal for me. Mid 90's we had an F-14 doing a scheduled super sonic fly by. I was up on the flight deck watching and saw the F-14 coming up @ a couple of thousand feet. At full after burn, and just before coming up along side, it dropped down to flight deck level and was maybe a couple of hundred yards off the port side. Saw the vapor cloud develop and then go around as the sonic boom went off. Just an awesome sight.

Re: Whats the best fighter jet fly by you've seen?

The last flyby I saw resulted in the pilots being severely reprimanded and almost got them kicked out of the course they were in. The Base Commander was livid and then when he left his office, he had coffee spilled on his shirt, upsetting him off even more. The pilot and navigator had done this before on another base, so there was already a previous strike.

Re: Whats the best fighter jet fly by you've seen?

Many years ago on a long lonely stretch of rural highway, I was conducting a traffic stop. I heard the roar of an approaching jet and saw an A-10 cruise by. Evidently the pilot was in a playful mood, because he stayed in a low circle over location until I cleared the stop. The look on the violators face was priceless. Best backup I've ever had.

Re: Whats the best fighter jet fly by you've seen?

got a few on the computer, i'll have to find them. cool video, not a flyby but cool none the less
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wMPdV6xA8X0&feature=related

as for cool flyby's we (my brother, myself and another friend) used to race sail boats in corpus. we were out practicing one day before the airshow, when the B1 that was to fly that weekend arrived in town and did the usual fly around to check the area. well there we were out in the middle of the bay and that damn by flew over us at a few hundred feet high and what i would guess to be around 400 or 500 knots. talk about noise. but it was so cool

There was nothing quite like the gun run with the 20mm cannons over Koalawe aerial gun range. The A4T almost stalled in dive when the guns fired, and acted like a nitro burn when they stopped. Very Cool indeed!

Here's an F-4 that flew over our ship at over 1k. We were prewarned so I grabbed my camera and was waiting for it.
F-4.jpg

Another time an F-4 decided to do the straight up thing for us. That's pretty impressive. He went straight up, eventually out of sight.

And the guys in the A1 Skyraiders used to do the slow speed (relatively) acrobats for us too.

All this after they were done killing the commies.
