Re: Worst "hack" job gun builds.....whatcha got?
Great post:
My tale is of my custom 20 1/2" barreled 416 Taylor. The 416 Taylor is a wildcat, based on a 338 Win Mag opened to 416 caliber.
It was based on a very nice FN action, in a French walnut stock, and a 24" barrel.
After shooting it a bit, I decided to put on the full monty fixed rear three leaf express sights, and Masterpiece banded front ramp sight, from New England Custom Gunsmithing.
I contacted a local gunsmith (aka: gun butcher), and he agreed to do the work. I paid the amount specified, for the NECG sights, and waited.
In the fullness of time, he said my gun was ready. And ready it was. You see the "gunsmith" ordered front barrel band sight, but forgot that the bands must be stretched to fit the barrel. So instead of stretching it, and opening it to the right size, he turned down the barrel for about 3.3" , at the muzzle end to fit it. And since he turned the barrel down, the fixed rear sight leaf looked over the entire front sight, bead and all.
I had a competent smith cut off the turned down portion, and fit the barrel band front sight correctly. Which is how my barrel wound up being 20 1/2".......
