Worst "hack" job gun builds.....whatcha got?

Re: Worst "hack" job gun builds.....whatcha got?

Gunsmith botched cutting a new dove tail on my buddies IPSC pistol so he cut 1/2 inch off and moved the sight back . Only problem was that it had a bull barrel which locks up on the front of the slide instead of using a barrel bushing .

oh boy, where do i start.
there was the fellow who tried to thread my fn bolt handle not realizing the steel is much harder than a rem .a standard die wont cut it even if you repeatedly heat it ... not pretty . or my buddy who tried to use a router to free float his barrel , it was very well floated .. a brand new factory rifle with a barrel threaded on so crooked it took 35 moa of windage to zero @ 100 yds .
on the bright side i have a great local smith/barrel maker to fix what i screw up .

Re: Worst "hack" job gun builds.....whatcha got?

I bought and paid for a Shilen Select Match stainless barrel for a build only to have my new rifle covered in rust within weeks of receiving it. The smith claimed Shilen packaged it wrong and marked it wrong. He claimed to have ordered it directly from Shilen, but a quick email confirmed Shilen had no idea who he was. God only knows what barrel ended up on my rifle.

Re: Worst "hack" job gun builds.....whatcha got?

I paid a gunsmith in Texas over $900.00 to rework my Remington 700 action in 223, install a new stock, new barrel and true up everything. It was a tall order, he said about a month turn around time.

Well, 2 months later I get the rifle. Only thing he got right was the color duracoat I asked for. The barrel wasnt cut down to the length I asked for, it had barely any bedding material in it (the bedding material had also been painted heavily), the bottom metal did not match the inlet in the McMillan stock, the receivers threading was only partially trued and not faced, the bolt had nothing done to it.

And it gets better!

He had broken a tap off in the front hole of my receiver. So I couldnt put the final screw in my scope base. Oh and the bolt knob was installed at an angle and barely had been hanging on. But this is what kills me, the barreled action was fit the the stock crooked. As in the barrel pointed to the 11 oclock position and the barrel channel was not even filled in.

A real cluster F*** - I ended up having to send it to a competent gunsmith and have him redo all of it. And he did an excellent job, it looks and shoots great now. I had to pay double the amount to get what I wanted......

I would recommend all people stay away from the Texas smith, he does not do half the stuff he claims he does. Then he lies about it and blames it on "previous employees he had to let go". Funny thing is, he always claims to be a one man shop!

Re: Worst "hack" job gun builds.....whatcha got?

Great post:

My tale is of my custom 20 1/2" barreled 416 Taylor. The 416 Taylor is a wildcat, based on a 338 Win Mag opened to 416 caliber.

It was based on a very nice FN action, in a French walnut stock, and a 24" barrel.

After shooting it a bit, I decided to put on the full monty fixed rear three leaf express sights, and Masterpiece banded front ramp sight, from New England Custom Gunsmithing.

I contacted a local gunsmith (aka: gun butcher), and he agreed to do the work. I paid the amount specified, for the NECG sights, and waited.

In the fullness of time, he said my gun was ready. And ready it was. You see the "gunsmith" ordered front barrel band sight, but forgot that the bands must be stretched to fit the barrel. So instead of stretching it, and opening it to the right size, he turned down the barrel for about 3.3" , at the muzzle end to fit it. And since he turned the barrel down, the fixed rear sight leaf looked over the entire front sight, bead and all.

I had a competent smith cut off the turned down portion, and fit the barrel band front sight correctly. Which is how my barrel wound up being 20 1/2".......

Re: Worst "hack" job gun builds.....whatcha got?

I don't have a pic of it but I was shown an 870 with a 4 cell Mag-Lite JB welded to the top of the receiver. The owner thought it would make a good house gun..... Some people shouldn't be allowed near a gun.

Re: Worst "hack" job gun builds.....whatcha got?

I have a buddy who was given a "shot gun" while he was in Africa. It was a broom stick with a tube lashed to it with wire and a nail for a firing pin, apparently it actually worked too.

Re: Worst "hack" job gun builds.....whatcha got?

Years ago I took a rifle into a local gunshop for drilling and tapping...Got the gun back three weeks later , bases installed...something I didn't ask for...but what the hell, they come off as easily as they went on.

So anyway, I pull the bases off and find that Goober misdrilled the holes on the first go round, filled them with plastic wood and redrilled the second set correctly....
