Rifle Scopes NX8 for hunting

Looking at the NX8 for a dedicated hunting scope for shots ranginging from 60 yards to 500 yards. Leaning toward the 4-32 since ive read the 2.5-20 can be finicky(eye box, etc..) Also, sfp will be my choice. Anyone using the nx8 as a dedicated hunting scope or wish you would have went a different route? Plan to purchase this week and hope to validate my choice from those already using one.

Best options for an entry level shooter who wants gear to grow into

I'm a person with lots of M4 experience but very, very limited experience with shooting anything beyond the 300-yard mark. I've done a little bit of long range shooting years past, though I consider myself only about half a step past starting fresh. I'm also a person who believes in buying good gear from the start and growing into it, rather than buying entry level stuff and then replacing it a year or two down the road (go big or go home). I have a Vortex Viper lying around the house somewhere (I don't know which version of it exactly, but I bought it about ten years ago), but I'm looking at getting something a little better for this.

I have an Accuracy International AT308 ordered that I'll hopefully be able to pick up this week sometime, and now I'm looking for a nice scope that I can both learn with and still be happy with five years from now.

Right now my eye is on a Nightforce ATACR 7-35x56, or possibly a Leupold Mk 5HD/Mk6 of one sort or another. I want something effective at the 1000-yard range or beyond (I realize my AT308 may not be perfectly suited for this distance, but I'm sure I'll at some point get something in .338 LM or .300 WM that can manage it better). Something rugged and durable would be ideal, a scope that can take bumps and shakes and even drops without much risk. Something that can be safely carried while attached to a rifle in a soft case in the back of a vehicle or carried on my own back. As far as conditions, it is frequently humid in the non-winter months here so if certain scopes are better at seeing through mirage, that'll be a big plus for them.

I'm a disabled veteran and so I believe I qualify for Nightforce's discount program, and I don't know what other manufacturers offer one. I'm aiming for something in the $2500-$3000 range after any applicable discounts are applied, though I'm willing to go as high as perhaps $3500 if I really have to.

All that said, what should I be looking at?

Gunsmithing Barrel Walking

Probably know the answer to this, but hate junking a good barrel.

Have been shooting a lot the last few weeks and have really noticed my Bartlein M24 6BR barrel stringing vertically. Gun zeros perfect at 100yds and dope has been trued out to 1000 yds, hitting 600yd waterline for MV then 700, 800, 991yd waterlines for BC. Lapua brass, 29.8gr of Varget, berger 109s. Barrel has about 1500 rounds on it, but more in cooler months.

Shooting the last couple matches, several of which where smoking hot (Oklahoma last weekend was 100F+ with little shade). I am finding my barrel stringing vertically through a 10rd stage. For instance, 500 and 545yd stage with 10ea 10" circles from modified prone. Dead center on first, but shots 2-5 string perfectluly vertical and hit target hanger for final 5 shots.

Confirmed similar results out at 900 yds, approximately 0.4mil elevation change at 900yds. This was exaggerated but can be partly explained by mirage.

Plans this week are to heat test by:

1) confirm 0 at 100yds
2) rip off 10 rds at one paster, reload, 10 more at a second paster, and probably a 3rd mag at a 3rd.

Goal is to see if i get repeatable results and max vertical with a smoking hot barrel. Yes, i know this may be a bit hard on thr barrel but my barrels are consumables.

Im thinking I just got 'one of those barrels' because I have not seen this with any of my other Bartleins (not blaming by any means...sometimes you just get them). Any thoughts?

I could get behind this if….

They were converting these infernal places to rifle ranges.

Took a chance on this... So far, so good!

So last winter, had a chance to buy this out of England. Sight unseen. But from a 'reputable' dealer. And price was sort of off the charts low. That said, it had a small repaired crack in the stock and sleeved barrels, which both dramatically affect value. I also had no idea of mechanical condition, etc.

After 8 months of paperwork and import fun... Arrived. And while the 'disclosed' items were right on... it was a hodgepodge of 'other' items. Issues with single trigger. Barrels didn't break cleanly. Automatic ejectors not working. And the crack that was 'repaired' was re-cracked. And more extensive internally than first believed. Oh and the buttplate was extended and pinned/glued. And I assumed was owned by either an NBA player or Lurch. Because it was a good 1/2" too long.

But... it is a Thomas Boss & Co. made in 1902. Their new 'Racehorse' style as it was the sleekest, slimmest gun on the English market. And the fit, finish, engraving, etc. is amazing. So, off to the workshops at Schloss Nitrocellulose for the treatment... First time I've really torn down a London Best gun... but there ya go. Might as well dive in.

First issue, it was bone dry. Not sure why it was not lubricated and properly 'tuned' when the barrels were sleeved. But everything inside was dry. Lots of burrs. Things were hanging up. This gun led a hard life, apparently. But lots of careful work and I have the locks and trigger working right. Then got the ejectors working (messed up during the re-sleeving process, probably.)

Just thought you guys would like to see some pictures of the inside of a pretty cool old gun. One of the interesting things about Boss is that since they were founded c. 1820, they have produced just over 10,000 guns. So many details have been saved and recorded that we know just about everyone involved in making it. Joseph Brazier of "The Ashes" (his workshop name) made the locks. It was engraved by John James Sumner III the third engraver in a family of four master engravers dating back to 1809.

Anyway, just some cool pictures. Everything is hand filed, hand-fitted and hand-engraved.

Brazier supplied 'soft' actions for engraving and finishing.

Cleaned up and lubricated. And de-burred.
boss 6.jpg

"The Ashes" was the name of Brazier's workshop in Wolverhampton. Company is still in business and makes barrels still.

And had to remove the old horn buttplate, which was over an inch thick. I sawed through the thick part with a bandsaw and then used a belt sander to thin the nice checkered horn plate to a more... presentable and better-fitting thickness. Then had to heat the 'thin' part of the plate that was glued and pinned to the stock. Yes, glued. So took a blowtorch to the horn (without getting flame on the oil finish!) and the glue let go enough to pry the remains of the plate off.

I have a couple of special screws ordered for the rear plate (just like the last one) and will final fit the checkered horn plate probably next weekend.
boss 7.jpg

I also de-greased, spread and properly glued the stock crack(s) and hopefully they will hold. I think they will once I have the sideplates re-fitted. Re-Stocking this would be spendy... I don't want to go there!

boss 8.jpg

Anyway, more pix to follow, but rather pleased with this gamble as I think the sweat equity is going to be well worth it. Not to mention, it's just a perfect field gun.

Cheers,

Sirhr

PS.... this gun, new cost just over 70 Pounds sterling in 1902. By comparison, a skilled engineer at that time would have been making about 110 pounds... a year. It was nice to be king!
