Rem700 Bolt Handle angle change

This may have been discussed before, or maybe I my google-fu sucks.

Has anyone ever changed the angle of the standard Rem700 bolt handle? I have a standard Rem700 .223 Ackley that shoots bugholes, but the only problem I have is that when the bolt is in the loaded postion, the bolt knob, and handle basically rest on my indec finger knuckle. I have not bumped it out of battery, or anything like that, it's just annoying.

Has anyone cut and re-welded the handle, bent it, or otehrwise modified one so as not to sit in that postion when loaded. If so how was it done, or who did the work? I am a little leary of doing int myself, as I don't want to ruin it, and I am not a good enough welder to attempt it and make it look nice.

Any ideas would be appreaciated.

I read through the ARC CDG bold handle thread, but it appears to be a completely different bolt.

Thanks

Staccato Surprise

This is conjecture, this is not absolute. I think Staccato is going to move away from the 2011 market that they effectively created. They are going to stick with variants of the Staccato HD but the big move is to a striker fired polymer framed pistol that will be targeted at the military and law enforcement. I think that they are going to exit the traditional 2011 market.

Where to Measure Scope Over Bore

I've been asked this a few times over the years and a few months ago I realized that I have the perfect rifle to demonstrate this for the most accurate measurement possible. Last weekend I finally got it out and took some pictures and a video to prove the point.

So where does one properly measure the scope over the barrel to get the most accurate ballistic calculations? What if I have a 30 MOA base? Over the turret because that's where the adjustments are? Over the Objective lens? Over the ocular?

Answer: At the Objective lens.

Why? Because that is where the image you see is formed. You can move the erector around on that image all you want with the turrets, you can slant the scope up or down with angled bases, but where the image you see is formed is always from the objective lens.

This is a Swiss K31/42 sniper rifle with a Kern 1.8x scope dovetailed onto the receiver. What is special about these scopes is that the objective lens assembly is a rotating periscope. Rotate down for protection during movement/storage, rotate up for use. Behind the rotating objective assembly is functionally very similar or the same as a typical 2nd focal plane scope. The only curve ball is how the elevation is adjusted, but for this demonstration you could do the exact same thing by placing and rotating a periscope in front of a traditional optic and see the same thing for yourself.

Here is the rifle with a business card with a sharpie dot on it (just for a reference point) stuffed onto the muzzle.

A shot of the optic for reference

Here is the same shot with the optic in the "down" position (slightly obscured by the sling on the right)

And here's a video of me flipping it up (live action!)

This shows a direct relationship between where the objective lens is and the image generated through the optic that your eye sees. Again, you can move an erector around on that image and change the angle you look at the image, but you will not change the height that the image is generated from. That height is the center of the objective lens.

The best way I've found to measure that with most rifles is to remove the barreled action from the stock (remove handguards for AR's), measure the widest part between the objective bell and the O.D. of the barrel with calipers, then subtract half of the barrel diameter (at the point you measured if it's tapered) and half of the objective bell diameter.

The errors caused by goofing this measurement are usually pretty small, but they are still errors and you can eliminate them. Happy Shooting!

Scoped Carbine Cheat Sheet

I put together a scoped carbine cheat sheet that I thought some people here might find useful. I made a more generalized AR-15 version a while ago but I wanted to make one that was tailored more towards the scoped general purpose rifles, DMR's, and SPR's with LPVO's, 2.5-10's, 4-16's etc...as a quick pocket reference for pertinent information. I borrowed some elements from a data book I put together and things like the modern wind rose from here. I made it to be printed on a 8 1/2" X 11" piece of paper, laminated, and folded to fit into a pocket, admin pouch, or whatever.

I purposely kept the information basic and somewhat limited because of the limited amount of room on the sheet but I think it'll work for most purposes. It's not likely one would be doing any serious ranging with say the mrad reticle in a Vortex 1-6 but if one can bracket an IPSC for height and width the distance can get worked out close enough to get hits within 5.56 distances. The wind rose and mirage chart are to help estimate the wind speed and direction but it's predicated on knowing your basic wind holds for the rifle or gun mph. The information is for reference setting up a drop chart, doing maintenance, or evaluating a target. I hope some of you find it useful.

Accessories Charlie Kirk Signature Memorial Cap - Embroidered Front / Back

Did a very limited run of these 'signature memorial caps' for friends and family and to send to TPUSA. I had a few left over. When they're gone they're gone.

I have 5 khaki left and 1 olive left. 100% cotton, top quality construction, unstructured Dad cap with bronze buckle back.

$25. plus shipping that runs usually about $8.00

Mark below your choice / quantity below and then DM me for details and to provide your shipping address.

Genesis 50:20 was one of Charlie's fav verses as he mentioned once in a video.

Reads: You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives". This verse is Joseph's declaration to his brothers, revealing that their malicious act of selling him into slavery was, by God's design, ultimately used to save their family and many others from famine and death.

Human evil vs. divine purpose:
It highlights the human capacity for evil but demonstrates God's ability to transform those intentions into good for a greater purpose.

To blink, or not to blink

Gotta question for the hide, especially the high level PRS guys, though this may apply to multiple other disciplines.

Something I’ve been working on is calling my shots, and in that journey of research (including a new build I’m doing), it’s easy to play blame on the relatively (emphasis on relative here guys) heavier recoil of the 6.5CM, and began researching lighter recoiling rounds such as the 6 Dasher/GT, or maybe even the 25x47 Lapua.

I spent about 5 hours at the range yesterday, with a heavy focus on calling my shots. What I realized is that I blink. I blink every damn time.

For context, I see the reticle right before the report, or trigger pull. I’m not anticipating the shot. I even had a buddy through in a dummy round to confirm.

I’ve tried doubling up on ear pro to no avail. I even struggle with this on the spotting scope. Blinking is helped my running suppressed, but my fundamentals aren’t on point enough to control the recoil enough to spot my misses. The only thing I haven’t tried is wrap around glasses to see if air turbulence from the muzzle break is causing me to blink.

So question 1: Does it even matter if I blink upon hearing the rifle report?

Question 2: If it does, how do I fix it?

Bear Creek Arsenal rangefinders and spotting scopes

I recently discovered that Bear Creak Arsenal makes laser rangefinders and spotting scopes, while their reputation for QC isn’t exactly great for their rifles, the feature set they advertise for the range finder is intriguing at the price point and likewise the price on the spotting scope is attractive, but does any of it actually work? Is it a viable entry level option?

They advertise the range finder as being good to 1500 yards (which I read as 750) and having an integrated ballistics calculator that runs off a smart phone (I.E. it gets the range via bluetooth than spits out a solution) and some kind of a weather input too. I don’t know what kind of calculator it uses but I know the name of the app starts with AB, is it using Applied Ballistics? I also don’t know how the weather function works, I assume that it just imports data from the nearest weather station, but can it be linked to your own weather meters like a Kestrel or Weather Flow? Will it link to other ballistic apps too like Geoballistics?

Obviously working off of a phone makes the ballistic computer function less convenient, but it also keeps the cost down, I don’t personally mind, I’m already using a weatherflow vs a Kestrel because I couldn’t justify an extra $700 for convenience, so I already run off the phone.

As for the spotting scope, I have no illusions that the glass is great, but how bad is it? Is it usable to 1000 yards at least?
