First precision rifle. Upgrade or full build?

Buy a platform and build on it slowly or build from a receiver?

Looking to build or buy my first real precision rifle that I will be regularly shooting out to 1000yd.
It's going to be 99% range gun, I doubt I will ever take it hunting. I believe I'm going to go 6.5 creedmoor.
I'm debating if I should pick up something like a Bergara B14 HMR (found one local for $875) and start shooting, upgrade piece by piece (trigger, chassis, barrel, etc.) over time or buy a receiver and slowly start a custom build. I already have a Leupold Mark 5HD 5-25x56 thats going on top of it.
Any suggestions are appreciated.

I can get a good deal on both of these scopes. Curious which is the better choice. I'm looking at the 4.5-22 razor or the 3.6-18 mark5. I prefer FFP so that's why I'm going with a higher mag range for the razor. This will be going on a 7mmSaw used for backcountry hunting.

The weight is close enough not to make a difference to me, and the rifle has a krieger 5.5 contour barrel on it, so super lightweight isn't the goal. I've read reviews on both, so I know they aren't tier 1 optics, but I also know they are considered reliable by most. I haven't found too many comparisons between the 2 though.

Oops...

I have a bad habbit of throwing out Hail Mary bids at auction sites, including RIA. Usually this is fine as my bids are way below the estimated selling price and I'm often outbid almost immediately. Sometimes it will take a few days before I'm outbid and it may rarely take until the auction itself, where I get massively outbid. Which is why I didn't withdraw my bid on the rifle I won last Sunday. I bid 40 percent under the low estimate and...nailed it dead on. Oops. Well, at least it's pretty.

Interesting front sight but makes the ladder useless. (Blade is too big)

Not sure what that is.

Interesting barrel markings.

Optics SPF Schmidt and Bender 5-25 PMII T3

Tremor 3 reticle. Scope well cared for and in great condition. I'm a lefty so S&B removed the illumination knob on the left side for me. This would be a great scope for another lefty since you don't have that illum knob to bump your fingers on while cycling your bolt. Perfectly fine for a RH shooter too -just no illumination. S&B just removed the knob and put their own flat cap on instead. I'll include the Seekins rings and the vortex bubble level if you want them. $2000 shipped CONUS. I'm the original owner and it'll ship with the original box.

New equipment

Picked this baby up last weekend.

1914 Lodge and Shipley 20x168 lathe.
Quick change gear box
3 jaw, 4 jaw, faceplate, and 2 steady rests.
Taper attachment too.

$2000 and I found a guy to deliver it for 150 bucks, but I had to move it.

I cannot complain. The previous owner has 5 types of cancer now from agent orange exposure. He cannot use it anymore but he did some good work with it back in the day.

The previous owner made these out of decommissioned 105mm gun barrels.

@sirhrmechanic and @buffalowinter for a good source for 105mm barrels.

308 Hybrid precision/hunting rifle barrel selection

I am building a new bolt action 308 and I would like some advice on barrel selection. I will be using one of the Howa 1500 barreled actions in 308 from Brownells with a KRG Bravo chassis.

I would love to get into precision rifle shooting but there are no ranges over 100 yards in my local area, so I will mostly use it target shooting at 100 yards or deer hunting in West Virginia. For deer hunting my max yardage would be 300-400 yards. I would also like to take a long range shooting course so I would like the rifle to be capable to 1000 yards, but not necessarily optimized for that. I think of it more as a hybrid precision/hunting rifle, similar to a Bergara HMR.

The 3 options I'm considering for the barreled action are a 20" heavy barrel (6lb), a 22" standard barrel (5lb), and a 24" heavy barrel (6.65lb). All three are threaded. Given my use case, which makes the most sense?

My thoughts are either the 22" standard or the 20" hbar. Two years ago I hunted with my 18" scoped AR10 (11lbs without ammo). It was definitely heavier than my standard hunting rifle but wasn't really a big deal, as I'm mostly walking logging roads and setting up in blinds. I can see the weight being more of a factor if I was hiking long distance in the mountains out west. The total weight with barreled action, stock and scope for the 22" would be 9.5lb, 20" is 10.5 lb, and 24" would be 11.15lb.

For my use does the extra 1 lb for the hbar 20" make sense?

25 creedmoor pressure issues

JGS 25 krud reamer
Peterson virgin 25 cm srp brass
REM 7.5 srp br

My initial load was to form the shoulders to my specific chamber
41.5 win 748, cheap 100 gr ppu bullets
Seated .200 into case (short flat base bullet)

What I initially thought was ejector smear, turned out to be ejector stamp- severe.
Backed down 3 gr- same result
Backed down to 36.5- same result
Heavy bolt lift off and on throughout this whole process, lighter loads produced “less heavy” but still harder than normal lift.
All rounds chambered like butter.

Tried what my planned final load components would be to see if the ppu barrels were causing this or possibly the powder-
Started low at 39 gr h4350
Berger 135
Same result, bullet seated .20 off lands

I’ve been chasing this around all year, bad powder? No, ppu bullets out of spec? No. Burr in the chamber? No

Cases form to same shoulder measurement after firing no matter what load

Action is high end and reputable in the custom rifle world , I’m not mentioning the manufacturer right now as they offered to look at the rifle, I swapped out another bolt for the action as my gunsmith thought that was the issue originally. Chased around the possibility of the ejector being out of spec, no.
Gunsmith is high end and reputable

Barrel blank from xcaliber, reamed with brand new reamer mentioned above.
Load data from quick load to form the brass shoulder to my chamber before starting development with h4350 and bergers.

Just wanted to see if anyone has had a similar experience, all I can guess is the action or the chamber.

Finding the node for 147gr ELD-M + H4350

Hi Everyone
Today I managed to go to the range and do some testing.
Rifle is a Defiance Ruckus with 24” CF proof Barrel with 1:7.5 twist.

Here is my sizing process:
-Peterson 2 times fired LRP
-FL sized with SAC sizing die
-Ran through mandrel for 2k neck tension.
Trimmed to 2.009
C.B.T.O= 2.166 (0.020 off the jam)
C.O.A.L= 2.878
Primer: CCI BR2
Powder: H4350
Chronograph: LabRadar
All the brasses had the same exact shoulder size. Powder charges triple checked before seating and settled by tapping on the bench lol.

Here is the results:

40.8g
SD:4.71 ES:9.88 2695fps

41.0gr
SD: 9.11 ES:18.35 2714fps

Ballistic-X-Export-2023-05-26 18:22:20.292562.jpg

I started having a little bit of heavy bolt lift at 41.4gr

I see two flat spots around 41.3-41.4 and 41.5-41.6

I like the ES/SD of 41.5 but here is the issue, at this point if I seat the bullet deeper it will cause more pressure and if I higher to reduce the pressure I am only 10 thou of the jam which is very close considering future adjustments I don’t want to go over AICS Mag length.

Any suggestions to choose the right node would be appreciated.

6Arc AR not making sense

To make a short story shorter, I’m gettting 2940+ fps from factory Hornady 108 Match ammo out of a 16” barrel. This doesn’t jive with what I have seen while not being able to sleep.

2900 numbers are from Magnetospeed. Initial doubts were caused when 1.8 mils (assuming 2425 fps) at 300 turned into .8 mils, turned into .4 mils, and still a little high.
I was always just hoping to get 2450, (jbm starting point) so I did not trust it. Shot over Magnetospeed and got 2934-2951 over 5 shot string.

Please let me know what you think.

Thanks
