I don't think control of the battlefield is where AI shines. Where AI will be most useful is in surveillance, defense, electronic warfare, and game theory. It can calculate odds instantly, predict outcomes with no emotion, collect data in real time etc. It will make combat vehicles infinitely more effective. Someone may still need to tell it to shoot that tank, but it won't require an 8 person team that cost a couple million to train and can't easily fail if pfc dipshit got a dear John letter from his wife 3 days ago, and he hasn't slept since, so he's drinking 8 rip-its a day to stay awake, and he can't get the round loaded, keeps dropping the primers in the mud, etc. Humans are the weakest link in everything functional. That is not reliable enough to be left alone to make kill/no kill decisions.
I can’t stress enough how much I think taking the human equation out of that would be a great thing. There is no way it will happen without the current laws of warfare being amended or tossed away. AI will NEVER have full unadulterated control of a battlefield.
