Sidearms & Scatterguns Lever Action thread

My Marlin (Ruger) Dark 45-70. Wanted a threaded rifle and a bit more "modern". I've got a bunch of older lever guns, so wanted to play with this one. Current setup has ARC X-Low rings, Leupold FX-II 2.5x Scout scope, Timney trigger (with the OE spring), Dead Air Primal, and Emissary handbrake. Tried a red dot for a bit and the WWG Happy Trigger and loading gate. Need to slick it up a bit more (has a slight catch sometimes after you fire it, the lever gets "sticky").

Shooting cast and powder coated bullets, Lyman 490gr (457406GC) and Lee 340gr (457-340-F), and just got a new MP mold that will be 420gr HP. Most of my loads are with 3N37, but tried some N320, Titegroup, IMR4227. 3031 for "regular" loads but have been waiting on the new mold to do more than just make subsonic plinkers. Got a bunch of starline brass when they had it in stock a few months ago, so I'm good there. So far it's a hoot- and cheap to shoot!

Now I want the SBL 38/357.

Quality Chamber Job - Smith Recommendations

For anyone in Arizona, Phoenix Custom Rifles won’t let you down. We’ve been doing bolt action rifle work exclusively for 14 years.
Currently we aren’t taking in shipped work, or shipping work out. But the good news for local guys is our turn around time of just a few days in many cases, a week on average. I’m open and working most weekends to keep wait times low, so call or text anytime.
Hell I’m happy to give a SnipersHide members discount too, just shoot me a message. I’ve been here since 2009 and it would’ve been much harder to get started in this industry if it weren’t for the Hide. Learned a lot early on, got encouragement, and grew thicker skin, thanks to the Hide.

Here’s another one of my favorites. Japchester 1886 takedown 45-70. I rented a .458 reamer to throat the barrel so I can load bullets over the standard 405. I also installed a reproduction Lyman 21 and an adjustable peep. It’s @MK20 ’s fault I bought it, he gave me the heads up as to its location.

Nice! I've got a 94 in 32WS with a Lyman 21 (Climbing Ladder) on it, but need the sight is in parts (been that way since I got it) and need to figure out how to put it back together. 1923 production.

For those that shoot suppressed, especially 45-70, is there any issue with leading in the suppressor? I shoot nothing but cast in mine and was thinking of getting a suppressor for it.
I shoot my 45-70 though a Dead Air Primal (sealed can). I cast for it but also powder coat my bullets. So far zero issues and I don't see there being any issue. I also cast 150gr 9mm hp subs and shoot those though a DA Ghost so I can take it apart and look around but no lead and no fouling of any type. For the 45-70 I've been shooting 340gr and 490gr Lyman molds but just got a 420gr MP HP mold that will probably become my main load once I find a good load. Cheap to shoot using something like 3N37 or N320 powder.

Looking for an an affordable and accurate AR-15

I had a 20” RRA Varmint. It ran like shit with a 30cal high back pressure typical bolt gun can that I had (not blaming the gun). Needed an AGB or different gas tube, but I was on a mission to try piston guns so I stupidly sold it. Heavy mf (~9.5lbs) with a nice trigger. Felt heavier than specs as a ton of the weight was out front…that barrel is PHAT.

But my PWS piston guns weren’t great. Lots of trouble cycling, but I was lucky to buy from Brownells and could return them. I shoot 100% suppressed. Must’ve gotten unlucky as they seem to have good reviews?

A year or two ago, I found an Armalite M-15 Competition 18” on sale from PSA for $899 (I think). It comes with an AGB, a nice single stage trigger (I prefer 2 stage, but this one is good), and a stock that works well on the pdog bench.

It’s on sale now for $999
Even though it has a 1:8 barrel, it shot this 10rd group with 40gr Vmax Fiocchi with an Atlas CAL bipod off a bench. And I suck as an AR shooter as I’m mainly a bolt gun guy.

You wouldn’t have to do anything to it for the pdog fields. It’s lighter than a RRA Varmint by a lot (in feelings anyway), which could be good or bad depending on what you prefer. I kinda like it as I shoot it well but can more easily use it for walking around too. It’s not sooo front heavy like the RRA Varmint was.

The weight is relative, of course. I have some 20lbs bolt guns.

Anyway, the Armalite rocks.
Was your varmint a 16, 20, or 24 inch barrel?

Thanks for the info and posts
