It's my Life Day - 3 year anniversary

I haven't really planned or thought this out, so it's all pretty off-the-cuff and I'm not sure where it's going. It's an important day for me, though, and it's not really something I talk about, or get to talk about, with most people in real life. Most people I know aside from my close friends, don't even know about it. And I guess I just want to talk about it a bit.

June 11th, 2022 was a Saturday, I was finishing up some work before going to meet my realtor at a few house showings. I'd been looking at houses for awhile, with the pandemic buying, money printing and plunging interest rates making buying progressively more difficult. It was a sunny, nice day, I remember that. I finished up what I was working on, realized I needed to meet my realtor, and since it was such a nice day, I grabbed my jacket, keys and helmet, deciding to take my BMW R1200RS. And that's the last thing I actually remember; I have a few memory fragments, pieces of seconds and poorly formed memories. The next thing I remember is coming to in the hospital the next day, or day after, I'm not exactly sure. My dad was there. I didn't know where I was, how I got there, or why I was there. I was laying flat on my back. I asked him why I was there, what happened. I remember telling him, "I'm so fucked." And then I don't remember much else for some time after that.

"Male 35 years old, helmeted single rider in high speed MVA, s.p. motorcycle vs car" is what the hospital intake form said. While I was on my way to meet the realtor, a Lexus pulled out directly in front of me from a parking lot, trying to cross two north-bound lanes to reach the two south-bound lanes. The driver told police he "never saw" me. When I say directly in front of me, I mean --directly-- in front of me. In what ended up being a lucky break for me, the driver behind me caught the entire thing on dash cam and turned it over to police.

Friday before the accident I was a strong, semi-jacked, outdoorsy type guy that loved to motorcycle, lift weights, kayak fish, had fished competitions, hike, camp, and had recently been skiing in Colorado with some good friends. I loved my feisty Brittany Spaniel more than the salt in food. I could squat 315#, bench 255# and deadlift 355# at 168 lbs and had previously overhead pressed 160# at 165 lbs body weight. And now, I was laying in a hospital bed, in the ICU, with no idea how I got there, or why.

I broke my left orbital, upper jaw, some bones in my sinuses and cheek. I broke my neck at cervical vertebrae C6, C7 in several places. I ruptured the ligament on the left side of my C-spine, and my C-spine had displaced a bit over 7mm. I had a spinal cord injury (SCI) at C5. My left distal radius was broken and badly displaced and my left ulna was displaced. I had broken my pelvis at the pubic symphysis, pelvic ring and IIRC had some separation or displacement of both sacroiliac (SI) joints. Thankfully, my pelvis did not displace. I also had a bilateral avulsion of the rectus abdominis --my abs tore off the bone. As I would hear repeatedly, I was absolutely lucky to be alive; I was told by more than one doctor and ICU nurse that most patient they see with my injuries don't survive them. In another bout of good luck, a prominent neurosurgeon was at the hospital and he was able to get me into emergency surgery stabilize my cervical spine anteriorly (from the front), put it back into place and relieve the pressure on my spinal cord.

Because of the broken neck and SCI, I was in a neck brace and entirely immobile. I couldn't move my legs, could barely move my arms and hands and was extremely weak. I would later learn that my dad called my oldest brother and sister and they came to the hospital as well, and, that in spite of the success of the first spine surgery, the surgeon was preparing them for the reality of caring for a quadriplegic and that it was highly likely I'd be in a chair for the rest of my life. In the next day or two, I'd have my second spine surgery to repair and stabilize the spine from the posterior (back). My memory of the first week or two is still pretty sparse from the head trauma and buckets of IV opioids, but one thing that does stand out clearly: after that second surgery when I was back in my ICU room, the surgeon came to check on me. I was half asleep and I have this thing I do where I rub my feet together to help me sleep. I was rubbing my feet together, a little bit but moving them nonetheless, when he came in and he stopped, looking at my feet and said, "oh my God, he's moving his feet." At the time, I didn't understand why this was significant, but according to this neurosurgeon, it was incredible.

A week or so later I was transferred to another hospital where my pelvis was repaired. This time only one surgery.

All in all, I spent three months in the hospital and in care facilities, recovering, rehabbing and learning to make peace with a different reality. I learned to rollover again, to sit up, feed myself and use a knife and fork, to put my socks on and get dressed, and to walk again --which is the thing people always ask about. I spent the next 9 months in day rehab and outpatient rehab for physical and occupational therapy, and had to completely relearn how to use my left hand. In the meantime, I lost my dream job that I had landed only 5 months before my accident. I still had my dog, though, and my best friend and her husband took me in for several months because I wasn't able to live on my own. And I learned a lot about myself and the human spirit.

I'm going to wrap it up here, for now, and get off this couch and get some pistol shooting in. There's so freaking much I could say on this, hell I could probably write a book on it. Maybe I'll add more to this later. But for now I need to step away. Anyway, for anyone that stayed until the end, thanks for reading my story.

If anyone has any questions about my injuries, the accident, SCI stuff, rehab, whatever, I'm pretty likely open to answering them. I recall there was another thread on here dealing with a fundraiser for a shooter that suffered an SCI and there was a decent amount of questions about it, so I'm pretty willing to share my experiences.

But right now, it's my 3rd Life Day, and I'm going to go celebrate.

Suppressors Liberty Precision Machine Anthem S

I was able to go and pick up this suppressor yesterday and thought I would post some photos since there is little info out there on them and they seem quite promising. It is a Liberty Precision Machine Anthem S. Really liking this thing and hoping the performance lives up to the Pew Science findings.

PEW Science Link:

Welds, fit, and finish all look excellent:

This bottom section is very well thought out. HUB threads. EA licensed serial ring so baffle stacks can easily be changed out, repaired, and updated. Wrench flats on the suppressor body. Very, very well executed. (Ignore the dust)

At the front, the end cap is threaded and interchangeable for flush fit, different size openings, and a flash hider.

Riley at LPM gave me this information via email regarding the durability of these cans. Note the tested down to a 12.5" 300 win mag!

"We did lots of testing on 10.5" 5.56 machine guns and optimized our welding to ensure a weld is the least likely fail point, we even use a special flux on the first weld to double the penetration and make that joint absolutely bomb proof.
Through testing we optimized the blast baffle shape and thickness, to ensure it wouldn't collapse while red hot and under direct impingement of the muzzle blast. The blast chamber wall thickness is tapered, to account for the temperature gradient along its length under extreme use and ensure a blast chamber failure is practically impossible, as a failure there is a massive safety risk to the shooter and those around them. The rest of the baffle stack had wall thicknesses optimized, to give us the best strength possible without going too overboard on the weight. At some point you have to pick an acceptable level of durability and call it good or the thing would weigh 2 lbs. One important note is that we design the inside of the baffle stack to fail BEFORE the tube will fail. This is extremely important, as a tube failure will send shrapnel in every direction, but a baffle collapse will send it forward/down range. This is an intentional safety feature, as it acts like a fuse and tells the shooter that something is wrong and to stop before they can do something that puts themselves and others at risk.

The Anthem cans are extremely tough, they will handle all but the most insane and impractical firing schedules you can throw at it. It is the only silencer so far to pass a 15 round test fire on a 12.5" .300 win mag, and it survived with zero damage. If you really want to run them hard on a SBR and/or machine gun, pick up a muzzle brake to act as a sacrificial blast baffle, it will help a lot to control erosion on the blast baffle face.

And finally, with the Serial ID Ring we license from Energetic Armament, you can be assured that if something does happen to the silencer, that we will be able to swap on a new baffle stack in less than 24 hours and your tax stamp and time investment will always be preserved and immune from damage."

I'll follow up with some thoughts when I get a chance to do some shooting with it.

Suppressors Abel Company - new offerings - Suppressors!

Hey Everyone,

We'd like to formally announce a new offering from Abel Co to the members of SnipersHide! The Biscuit and Biscuit-S suppressors - our first 2 models (with plenty more to come down the line). For those that don’t know us, we designed and manufacture the Abel Table, a modular tac table that can be used for a multitude of different tasks.

Abel Company was created to provide quality products and resources that support American citizens, our military and our law enforcement. The owners of Abel Co. come from a long background of Aerospace & Defense manufacturing and fabrication - experience and knowledge that we take into Abel Company. Our goal is to grow Abel into a defense solutions company that provides goods and knowledge to our customers.

Our Suppressor - The Biscuit/Biscuit-S

Our concept, that we took to development, is to make a suppressor that functions well on every platform and mostly caters to individuals who want one suppressor for ALL of their firearms We have done extensive testing on our end to hit several key criteria prior to approving release to market.

The key criteria we achieved is as follows:
1. Suppress sound (obviously) to levels under/near 140 Db at the shooter's ear per MIL-STD-1474. This criteria was achieved; different platforms yield different results, but overall this was achieved. We use the B&K Impulse Noise Evaluation System (PULSE) for all in-house testing and we partnered with PewScience to provide 3rd party testing.
2. Create a suppressor that does not add significant length or weight to the firearm. This was a mandatory design characteristic for us as a result of meeting with active LE/MIL personnel that made their concerns known. This suppressor must be at home on a precision bolt gun and in a CQC environment.
3. Minimize the back pressure felt/experienced by the shooter and the host weapon system. This is especially important as we are marketing this suppressor as a do-all suppressor and it musty perform reliably on gas-sensitive systems.
4. Minimal to non-existent POI shift and predictable repeatability.
5. Affordability. It is important to us that we manufacture and sell suppressors that are affordable to the consumer.

The Biscuit was designed as a "Jack of all trades” suppressor. It is 1.80”-1.85” in diameter, fully-welded 17-4 stainless (heat-treated to the H900 condition) and features an industry standard 1.375x24 threaded mounting end. The Biscuit weighs in at 15.9 ozs, is 5.5” long and is rated as a hard use suppressor. The end cap is welded but can be ordered in .223 or .30 exit diameters. It can be used on anything from SBRs to magnum bolt guns. We have tested and rated it up to 300PRC.

While this was not designed to be a specific bolt gun only can, it has proven to be excel when testing POA/POI shifts (I personally shot a 10 shot group where every other round was attached vs off and it was under 1 inch).

The MSRP for the biscuit is $790 and the S is $700. We will be offering an introductory discount for Hide members so please PM me for the code. Please ask us any questions you have in this thread and we will be happy to answer them.

REM 700 SA prefit action?

I received my outlier rem 700 prefit barrel in .243 that I am using for my first build that’s not starting as a store bought rifle. I guess I should have done a little extra research before I had it threaded for rem 700 threads as my plan was to use a zermatt origin action but I now know those are threaded for the savage pre fits. Now I’m looking at the faxon fx7 for my action. Before I pull the trigger are there any other actions you feel are a better option? Most everything I find doing my research ends up being info on savage threaded prefits.

Element Nexus Gen2 4-25x50

I stumbled upon this yesterday at an online retailer in South Africa. It is listed as available but with no more information other than a small pic and price.

Looks like it'll be about $2k. Anyone know anything about it?

It's mostly just intriguing because of the success Zeiss S3. Everyone on here that has one seems to like them, issues notwithstanding. If it is a LOW clone, I wonder what this brings that is different or competitive? Doesn't look like price.

I need a new scope for my 18” 5.56 DMR. I am torn between the two options from NF. I usually don’t like to go below 18-20x on my scopes but I see a lot of love for the ATACR, for obvious reasons. Both would be bought with a MIL-XT and cost around the same +\- $400

Any substantial optical quality I would be giving up by going with the NX8?

Arken issues. Or is this normal ?

Recently picked up a used Arken 4-16x gen2 scope used off a guy local to me. Had a little wear on it, but it was in the original box with the flip caps, bubble level, throw lever, and a cheesy cantilever mount.

Looked through it before I bought it and didn't really see anything that jumped out at me so I paid the guy and was on my way.

After I got home and set it up on my tripod and started looking around and I noticed the parallax was way off. To get it parallax free at 230 yards it's focused to 500 on the scope.

Another thing is the reticle. No matter how I try and focus it, the reticle appears to bend if you get your eye out of the center of the eyebox.

Is this normal behavior for Arken or do I have a warranty claim ?

Suppressors Abel Theorem And Biscuit

Shot both the Biscuit .30 cal and Theorem for the first time today on my MPA Matrix Pro, Bartlein barrel, in 6.5CM. I was expecting that the POI would be off just a little like most every other suppressor I've ever shot. I made zero adjustments and absolutely thrilled with the results and sound. I'm going with the Theorem (as planned) on the precision rifle and the Biscuit on one of my AR's.

I'm waiting on approval for the Theorem-S that was submitted a couple of days ago so will have that as an option also. Lots of good options on suppressors but I'll be buying a couple more from Abel.

Theorem is direct threaded to barrel, 5 shots total with first cold bore shot is the one to the left. Zero adjustments to the scope after installing the suppressor.
