CVA Cascade 6.5 PRC w/ 156 Berger Elite Hunter hand loads

Finally put a 4 round group through the CVA Cascade and got a picture of the group. Why not 5 round?... we all know why lol)
CVA Cascade 6.5 PRC 24" barrel
Leupold Gen.2 VX-5HD 3-15x illuminated firedot
Hornady Brass
Winchester WLR primers
57.1gn Vihtavuori N560
156gn Berger Elite Hunter
BTO=2.263"
2901 fps avg.

Failed to bring the target home before trashing it so all I have is a relative measurement for the group size.

Going into this I know I needed to re-zero because I just put this scope on this particular rifle. Use to have the Mark 4 Hd 4.5-18 on top with illuminated reticle but it felt too busy for hunting and didn't have the low end I wanted

first group(very bottom): center POA, dialed up 6 clicks after, slipped zero with tool less speed set dial
second group(next group up): center POA, dialed down 1, slipped zero again with tool less speed set dial
windage confirmation before adjust shot: aiming top center of larger white diamond, dialed back up one click and slipped zero again. dialed 6 clicks right (double what I thought necessary, I like to "unload" erector system for my final adjustment (read as: make last correction leftward rather than load the system by making last correction rightward)
Windage correction shot: aiming top center o large white diamond, confirmed only need 3 clicks to adjust. adjusted 3 clicks and slipped tool less dial to zero

1 shot left in magazine aiming dead center on top 1" diameter target :)
load 3 more rounds, fire directly into same 1" target :)
decide to not take that 5th shot, because... well, you know :D

The other 3 shot group is from a while back with the same load that did have a direct measurement taken but failed to get a picture of the group...
So far I have roughly 350 rounds through this gun, proper break in and upped my cleaning regiment to follow some of the best competition shooters advice

All in all, wanted to firmly position myself on learning how to reload for your barrel > buying expensive rifles and hoping factory ammo shoots well through it.
I have tons of buddies at work who purchase very expensive custom guns that can't get them to shoot well nearly in 4 times the amount of time put in and twice as much money on factory loads as I spend in "quality budget" class division and tune my loads for the rifle.

When anyone asks me what rifle they should buy I will highly suggest a sub $1000 gun and for them to reload before they go spending big money on the tac drivers. Barrels these days seem pretty few and far between to have major issue with grouping if the fundamentals are there to back it. Can't speak for all budget class rifles, but the CVA Cascade came recommended for dumb accurate at a $650 price point and I don't think that was hog wash at all.

What's your thoughts??

Firearms WTS: Turnkey, 2 barrel Q Fix 6.5CM/TT 3-15M setup $6600

Well, I just didn't catch the 6.5 Creedmore bug like everyone else and this is the last 6.5CM in my stable. Time for her to find a new home as I didn't shoot a single round after buying her from a member here on the Hide during Covid.

Q Fix:
- Two 16.5" 6.5CM barrels, one Proof carbon fiber and the other bring the OEM Q Fix 6.5CM barrel. The Proof barrels alone are $1k aftermarket. Barrels have minimal round counts, 200 on the OEM barrel and fifty on the Proof from the previous owner. Minor cosmetic scuffing on the right side of the receiver (see pics). Comes with padded cheek piece and tripod rail attachment, bipod and suppressor not for sale. $3000
- Tangent Theta 3-15M MSR with NF one piece mount, only mounted and bore sighted. No rounds under it. $3800

Will sell the package for $6600 shipped and insured to your FFL. I also have 600 rounds of 6.5 Creedmore Hornady ELD 81500 140gr match ammo for $900 shipped. If someone buys all 600 rounds, I'll throw in another 100 rounds of various boxes of miscellaneous 6.5CM match ammo for sighters. Text 317-727-6472 if you have any questions or want more pictures.

22 Creedmoor Short Barrels - best powders?

Hello all,

Have a couple barrels incoming to build two 22 Creedmoors, bolt actions on a Defiance Ruckus and Terminus Apollo Ti.

One barrel is 20” and one is 17”. Will be suppressing. Planning to hopeful get 75 ELDms to shoot, but not against smaller, maybe 70 or 75 Berger or 69 SMKs. I have a ton of H4895 and Varget, less of H4350. I’ve heard Reloaded 26 gives good velocities but I have none.

Just curious if your pet loads with shortish barrels on the 22CM abs what velocities you’re seeing?

Firearms WTS: Sako TRG 42A1 .338 Lapua Magnum

I am selling my Sako TRG 42 A1 to make up room (and pay for) another rifle. It is in great shape- Ive zeroed it and fired it probably about 60 times. Runs fantastic (obviously). I am the 2nd owner- the original owner had fired around 70 rounds I think?? The bore is mirror and the rifle is like brand new. I got a killer deal on this rifle at $4,500 and that is exactly what I am asking for it. Includes the box, manual, extra grips, an APA fat bastard muzzle brake, and 2 magazines. Does not include the bipod, Spuhr mount or the Zeiss LRP. $4,500 or best offer.

Hello from WV

Grew up shooting on occasion on my grandparents farm. After getting my first job a few years ago, a coworker got me into USPSA shooting and reloading, and have since acquired a POF revolution in .308 and am looking at getting a bolt action in the same caliber for more precision work. I got tired of chasing groups with a rifle that wasn't designed for it, but hated to reload "sub-par" ammo. Other than that, I'm happy to discuss anything firearms and am always willing to learn or try something new.

SOLD Stag Pursuit Chassis in FDE, for Rem700 SA pattern rifles

Brand new, never even had an action set on it.

Stag Pursuit - FDE, m-lok on the bottom, includes the spacers, spigot, bag rider. Uses a pin that allows you separate buttstock and forend to make a shorter overall length to fit into packs. Seems like a great stock, but I don't have any current use for it.

$450 shipped, OBO

Shorter barrels, slower speeds = more deviation from BC/CDM models?

I haven’t seen this discussed specifically anywhere but was wondering if I missed it, or if anyone has meaningful insights.

I’ve been helping a pile of friends get their hunting rifles ready for this season and with the popularity of shorter barrels on hunting rifles and thus slower than “average” speeds, I have noticed we’ve had to adjust MV quite a bit more to get the data to line up with what we are seeing at 400yds.

This made me wonder if the further you move away from the speed of bullet used to establish either a BC or CDM, will you see a greater deviation from that drag profile? AB’s calibration video has scared me off adjusting the BC or drag model so I am back to fudging MV.

Just one example. I was switching powder lots and testing both velocity and accuracy last night. I shot the same round out of an 18” barrel at a measured 2586fps and from a 24” barrel at a measured 2702fps. To get the data to line up at 400yds I had to increase the 18” MV by 38fps but the 24” by only 13fps.

Does this match what you’ve observed as well? Thanks!
