@lash and @Tyler Kemp I figured we could start a new thread to kick ideas around instead of polluting @Terry Cross’s thread haha.

So, the objective is to allow someone to go from shooting 308 Win to 338 Lapua with the change of a barrel, bolt and magazine. Extra points if it’s possible to step down to 223 sized cases (would also have to bug Joe make a 223 faced LA bolt). Personally, I’m running a Zeus QC in a KRG Bravo at the moment and have Standard, Mag and Lapua bolts / barrels.

I’m totally fine with single stack mags with 5rd minimum capacity. 10 rounders would be nice especially for the SA calibers. Double stack might be a necessity if 223 is an option.

So far, the two trains of thought are:

1. Printed magazines that are proprietary and fit in the LA mag well. Pros would be quality control and customization for mag length (3.715” vs 3.80” length, etc.)

2. Printed adapter that allows for other magazines to be used. An advantage would be ability to use current magazines but there would be variances introduced which may impact reliability

Before long, I’ll get some pics up of what I’m using currently. Until then, it’s opening day of bow season here so I’m gonna think about this in a tree stand!

R700 300wm to 7prc advice needed..

Just got an elk tag and pulled an old 300wm out of the safe, it probably hasn’t been shot in 7 years. I noticed the muzzle threads are messed up, I sent it to be threaded years ago and there is no relief cut between the threads and shoulder so a suppressor or muzzle device doesn’t have a square shoulder to index on. Anyways I want to order a new barrel for it and am thinking about going the 7prc route. Everything I read says going from 300wm to 7prc is just a barrel change, I read they share the same bolt face. My question is will the 7prc cartridge fit in an old AI mag designed for 300 wm? I also need to decide on barrel length and profile, I’m kinda leaning towards 22” sendero, but open to any advice.

Good .223 DMR/MPVO Optic These Days?

Hey all,

I know this question has been asked a couple times and I've been reading through some recent threads, but hoping for folks with experience on a few of these optics to chime in. In short I have a proven 20" SAMR-ish .223 gun that I love but just haven't shot much in the past few years.

So I pilfered the old school mildot SWFA 3-9 I had on it and ending up selling that along with a .308 bolt gun to a buddy getting into hunting.

Well I'd like to get an optic back on the rifle and I figured there's probably something out there these days for around $1K that'd have some nice updates compared to the old reliable SWFA. And wouldn't you know it there's just as many trade off's now as there was back then.

I'd be curious if anyone had any $.02 on my considerations here or if I'm missing something I'd appreciate it. Use case is primarily a bit of target shooting, coyote hunting, and maybe a gas gun match from time to time.

Things I like (for this gun):

FFP
2-10x-ish magnification
Length around 13" or less
Weight around 25oz or less
Illumination
Zero Stops / Locking Turrets
Not super busy reticles
Adjustable Parallax (nice to have but not required for this gun)

Things I don't like (for this gun):
Unreliable things
Heavy / Long Scopes
Super busy reticles / should be hunter friendly

I have a range for sure but this is what I'm considering:

_________________________________________

Leupold Mark 4HD M5C3 FFP TMR Illuminated
~$1000

My initial replacement thought. Love the size/weight, features, reticle is acceptable for me.
Concerned about tracking and reliability based on Rokslide tests for the money. Conflicting reports on glass quality for the price.

_________________________________________

Steiner H6Xi 2-12x42mm STR-MIL FFP
~$1500

Love the size/weight, features, glass is probably excellent, bit spendy (diminishing returns?)
Reticle is a bit busy for me and feel it might get lost hunting

_________________________________________

Trijicon Credo 2-10x36 FFP w/ Red MRAD
~$1000

Good size/weight if just a touch long, Japanese glass
Reticle a bit busier than I'd like, unsure if better that the Leupy for the same price?

_________________________________________

Athlon Helos BTR GEN2 2-12x42mm AHMR2 FFP IR MIL
~$400

Like the size/weight, features, generally like the reticle, ranging capability is really cool, cheap means more money rolled into scope on a different rifle faster, or less buyer's remorse if someone ever comes out with a banger MPVO.
Don't love a 1 MOA dot, biggest concerns is on quality and reliability, glass is said to be OK, seems like a dice roll.

_________________________________________

Vortex PST Gen 2 2-10x FFP Mil
~$750

Like the size/weight, generally like the reticle, cheaper than other options, Vortex warranty
Discontinued/Somewhat Hard To Find, glass said to be OK

_________________________________________

Bushnell LRTSi 3-12 FFP
~$800?

Like the weight, a touch long, G3 tree is ok, said to have great Japanese glass, should have bought one years ago during the blow out.
Discontinued/ Very Hard To Find, read a few horror stories about Bushnell warranties on these and replacing them with worse options

_________________________________________

Maven RS1.2 - 2.5-15x44 FFP
$~1100

Excellent performance in Rokslide tests, Good glass, good hunting reticle, great magnification range
Definitely a long boy, a touch on the heavy side, temptation to slap on a bolt-gun hunting rifle instead

This upgraded stock allows shooters to comfortably and accurately shoot from all positions at the range and in the field.

Spiral Fluted Barrel and Bolt

Both the barrel and bolt of the Alpine ST are spiral-fluted to reduce weight, improve heat dissipation, and give the rifle a great look.

Shorter Barrel Lengths

The Alpine ST line features shorter barrels on Weatherby Magnum Calibers. Most barrels will be 2” shorter than traditional offerings (excluding 6.5-300).

TriggerTech Trigger

TriggerTech’s trigger provides a true zero-creep break and is externally adjustable down to 2.5 lbs. Precision-cut stainless steel components ensure consistent trigger pulls from shot to shot in a safe, reliable, and corrosion-resistant package.

Accubrake ST™

The Alpine ST comes with a radial muzzle brake engineered to reduce felt recoil by up to 53%. All models are conveniently threaded with 1/2x28 threads.

14 Chamberings Available

Available in standard short and long actions, the Alpine ST offers some of Weatherby’s historic magnum cartridges but is also available in some of the most popular cartridges on the market.

Short Action: 6.5 CM, 22 CM, 25 CM, 6.5 PRC, 308 Win,

Long Action: 257 WBY, 6.5 WBY RPM, 6.5-300 WBY, 280 AI, 7mm PRC, 7mm BC, 300 Win, 300 PRC, 300 WBY

Okay Ad Lib Time,

We had a 307 for a while where and these are great rifles, and in 65CM they have a magazine, so you can use it as production rifle.

I put a APA Micro on it and make you can really control this rifle. Chris was doing a bunch of off hand, no support but a sling work with it, and things were great all around with this rifle

FNG from PA

FNG from Western PA. Air Force Veteran (1988-1992) then continued to pursue a career as a LEO for the State of Pennsylvania. Before someone asks, yes, Gunny Sarge who served in Air Force. Gunny is from my all time fav movie, Full Metal Jacket. Retired in 2014 and that's when my bank account began to drain fast! How'd thunk this long range shooting would be so expensive and addictive? 😁
