Advanced Marksmanship Fclass or super stable bipod for load development/tracking

Anyone use a higher end bipod like the Fclass ones for shooting groups or tracking test?

I have a bunch of the usual's, Ckyepods, harris, accutac but they all have enough wobble and play that I can shoot off a bag better than a bipod.

Wondering if grabbing a F-class bipod like the Tier one FTR would be a good idea. I don't want a full blown bench rest rest to lug around, but a bipod wouldn't be terrible, along with a good rear bag.

Euro Optic shipping procedures SUUUUCK!

So, I know Euro Optic is a decent company, but the way they do their shipping now basically removes me from being able to buy from them ever again unless I am buying something under $500.

Here’s the facts. I bought a Leupold Freedom 4-12x40 30mm side focus CDS tri-moa, scope and a couple other things that totaled over $500. The scope was a blemish for a good price, so I thought I would give it a try and see if it would track well enough out to 600 yards for hunting since it’s quite a bit lighter than the VX-5’s. Well, at that price, they ship UPS and require an adult signature. If you check the box to not have an adult signature, they their policy is basically no fault to them if UPS never delivers the package and loses it, you’re just out the money. There’s no one that can sign for this until next Tuesday, but I’m was thinking with UPS My Choice, I can have it held at a pick up location and grab it when I get home. NOPE! Not an option. I called UPS and they can’t even change it. It can’t be held, it can’t be rerouted to a friend, it can’t be delayed one day, they will only try to deliver three times then ship it back, no other options. Even if I was going to be home to sign for it, who has time to sit on the porch with a 6 pack waiting on a brown truck? I sure don’t. I called Euro Optic and they can’t even change it. Their contract with UPS sucks; they need to use FedEx as primary instead as I could have routed it to a FedEx store. Apparently UPS won’t route to UPS stores. Euro told me UPS closed all their pick up locations which leads me to the though, why am I paying UPS for My Choice if there are no choices offered?? That’s the next call.

Oh well, UPS will try delivering Thursday, Friday, and Monday, then ship it back. It’s probably the scope gods looking over me and telling me the Freedom with CDS won’t track and I should go be poor somewhere else and go to the gym more to carry the 5 extra oz of the VX-5. Euro told me they could reship it with no signature required for an additional charge. I said, no thanks, I’ll take a refund. No signature required means UPS can loose it and I’m out the money; no thanks; I also don’t think in that situation Euro should shoulder the loss either; if UPS loses it, UPS should shoulder the loss. Once UPS picks up the package from Euro, Euro’s liability with it should end.

Despite the fact Euro has a good reputation, their shipping policy with UPS is so problematic, when there is no one around the house during the day, that I can’t do business with them. If you choose to order from them, do so with the knowledge that they will only ship to the address on the credit card, they will required a signature, and there’s no way to redirect to a friend, business, UPS pick up location, nor UPS store. So if you, like me, travel for work, or don’t have time to sit out front with a 6 pack, you may want to order from somewhere else that offers better flexibility.

Rant over. I keep telling myself that scope is junk even at blemished prices and it would have only caused me trouble.

*** Ok, before you jump to conclusions, as a few have done, which may not be those I’m trying to communicate, skip to post #63 for the summary. ***

So, where do I go from here? .223 change in reload method.

24" .223w, Hawkhill/737 build from Blue Mountain Precision. Muzzle, 419 adapter, Nomad 30 with Ebrake and ATS tuner, currently at "0"
I've had this a bit and can't leave well enough alone.
I did work a load with 24 grains of Varget, seated at 2.390 OAL using an old set of standard RCBS 2 die set, polishing the expander ball to give me best I can tell is .003 tension. Cases are unturned Lake City 04 cases. Annealed and dry tumbled, Hornady One Shot as lube, inside and out. Load was developed with suppressor on.

What I changed
Redding Type S Competition Die Set, Micro meter seater, .245 TN bushing, 21st Century .222 mandrel. Case prep-added brushing inside necks with bronze brush before and after annealing. Lubing was the same with One Shot. While at "2.390" OAL, using the ogive gauge and the seater, 1.88 CBTO+/- .001. I have to check "jump", have it written down. Measured outside neck of loaded on original at .246/.247(unturned brass)

Oddly, I called number 9 on each 10 round group, I did omit shot one from the "old load" as it was low and from coming off a string of PPU ammo, didn't affect grouping though, just the numbers.
Part of me thinks I wasted my money on the dies.
So;
try .221 mandrel?
powder charge tweak?
above and tweak tuner, although the numbers on ES/SD are higher.

Check Yourself

I don't normally post public service announcements. But this is an easy fix.

In the what are you listening to thread, I posted a song from Firehouse. The singer, 64 year old CJ Snare, passed away recently. The lady of his love of a lifetime revealed that he had been struggling with a Stage 4 colon cancer. No doubt, he was always working and wouldn't take the time to get himself checked. Seriously, Firehouse is always working and will play anywhere at anytime.

Colon cancer is the most easily detectable and preventable of the cancers. Because of my age, (I just turned 60) my doctor had me do a colonoscopy for a colon cancer study he was doing and my age made me a profile fit. And it was covered by my insurance. First, I did the cologuard, shipping shit through the mail. Then the procedure. They found 4 polyps, all benign and removed them.

When I had woken up in my day room, the doctor brought me water and coffee and asked me if I had any questions.

I asked, "Did you find Jimmy Hoffa?"

Without batting an eye or even a snicker, he said, "No, we did not."

Guys, get yourself checked. It does not have to end like this.

And get with your doctor about having your PSA tested. Prostate cancer no longer relies on the finger test. Why check? My wife's favorite singer, Dan Fogelberg, passed away in his 50s from prostate cancer. Again, always working, not getting himself checked.

Bighorn Origin Build Thread

Post your Bighorn Origin builds here.

Mine is another masterpiece by Jon Beanland.

Bighorn Origin
#3 Bartlein 5R chambered in 6.5 Creedmoor finished at 24”
McMillan Adjustable Game Scout in Desert Carbon Ambush
Triggertech Diamond
APA Bottom Metal
Bighorn 20 MOA rail
SWFA rings
Bushnell 3-12 LRTSi
Flush cups on left side.

Load development was easy. Wind was unusually calm so I decided to do it at 500. Not picky at all. Biggest group of the day was the 130gr Berger AR Hybrids at .632 MOA. Best was 42gr H4350 behind the Berger 140gr Elite Hunter. That went .498 MOA. Five 5-shot groups with 5 different loads averaged .555 MOA at 500 yards. Taking this one for Caribou in a couple of weeks.

I picked the best charge from my 500 yard load development and put 5 rounds on paper at 100 today to make sure I had a good zero. Wind was gusting hard and bench was really wobbly or it would have been better. Made a .1 adjustment and reset the zero indicator. Battery ran out on my chronograph so I made a guess on velocity and took it to 820 to use the velocity truing function on Ballistic AE. Group was 4.5” low at 820 so I put that in Ballistic AE and it determined true velocity was 2790. Fired one more group at 820 using 2790 velocity and it was centered on aiming point. I think we’re ready for Caribou.

Light weight/Long range hunting build - which direction would you go?

Alright everyone, curious your thoughts. I recently built my first lightweight 'semi custom' rifle to use in the mountains up here in AK - bought a new Tikka T3x in 300 WM, pulled off the barrel and replaced it with a proof pre fit in 7MM PRC, dropped it in an AG Composite Alpine Hunter stock, had a gunsmith bed it, upgraded the bottom metal, etc. Looks good and all, but unfortunately doesn't shoot quite as well as I'd hoped (could be a dud of a barrel or what not for sure). The Tikka bolt has also had galling issues on the cocking ramp, which is going to add to the gunsmithing cost to fix as well.

What I've learned is that it doesn't take long for a 'budget' build to start creeping up toward the cost of a true custom set up that shoots great out of the gate lol. Especially when the 'budget' build requires a bunch of gunsmithing costs, potentially a second barrel, more load dev. to fight through, to reach its potential (if at all).

So, I'm curious what everyone else has had success with in their builds? Premium actions with pre-fit barrels, premium actions with premium barrel blank and chambered by a GS, maybe something in between like the barreled actions starting to be offered by companies like Bergara? Full custom rifles setups already built for sale? Which direction would y'all go? For context, a light weight rifle to pack in the mountains that reliably shoots sub MOA is what I would be stoked on. My current build has been struggling to achieve that consistently unfortunately. Thanks for weighing in!
