RIP JB Hodgden... co-founder of Hodgden powder

1750375630358.png

From their Web Site:

Hodgdon® Announces the Passing of Co-Founder JB Hodgdon

It is with profound sadness that Hodgdon shares the passing of John Brewster “JB” Hodgdon, who passed away on June 13, 2025 at the age of 88. A lifelong resident of Kansas, JB was born on October 16, 1936 to Bruce and Amy Hodgdon. JB grew up in suburban Kansas City and was extremely active in his hometown community with first responders, Scouting America (formerly the Boy Scouts of America), and the classic car community holding special places in his heart. He graduated from the University of Kansas in 1959 with a degree in Business.

In his career, Mr. Hodgdon held many roles at the Hodgdon Powder Company. In the early days, he packaged powder at the family dining room table. He led international sales and served as the face of Hodgdon at industry trade shows. He served on the Hodgdon board in various roles, including Board Chair, for many years and was named Chairman Emeritus in 2025. With his brother Bob, JB Hodgdon continued the legacy of Hodgdon Powder Company started by his father and grew the company into the preeminent supplier of gunpowder and black powder substitutes for handloading and muzzleloading enthusiasts. Hunting trophies from around the world and his firearm collection in his home and Hodgdon offices are a testament to his passion for hunting and shooting.

“I have been associated with the Hodgdon family and JB Hodgdon for more than five decades,” said Tom Shepherd, Chairman of the Board at Hodgdon. “JB was a first-rate owner, an incredible professional and a valued friend and counselor to work for during my career. He will be deeply missed.”
JB was a devoted annual supporter of the National Shooting Sports Foundation, a lifetime benefactor member of the NRA, a life member of the Kansas State Rifle Association and a member of the Safari Club of America, Pheasants Forever, Ducks Unlimited, and the National 4-H Shooting Sports. He was deeply devoted to supporting youth involvement in the shooting sports through his work with Philmont Scout Ranch, Scouting America’s National High-Adventure Base in Cimarron, New Mexico. JB and his wife Anne, through their charitable foundation, enhanced Philmont’s ability to support our nation’s next generation of hunters and shooters with a focus on safety. JB was inducted into the National Shooting Sports Foundation Hall of Fame (2020) and a co-recipient with his brother Bob of the NRA’s Golden Bullseye Pioneer Award (2009). Additionally in 2009, JB received the Shooting Industry Academy of Excellence Award.

JB is survived by his beloved wife of 28 years, Anne, along with his four sons, two stepchildren, four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Though JB has left us, the legacy he leaves — of family, faith, hard work, and love for shooting and the outdoors — will continue to guide all of those who knew him.

I'm looking for now, what has become a LPVO. This is going on a 9.3x64 Brenneke, and will be used as a dangerous game rifle. 1-4X would be OK, but 1-6X is better. It needs to have an illum reticle and a ballistic reticle would be nice. I'm OK with Japanese glass, assembled in Philippines, but do not what anything to do with chicomm stuff. It seems that Sig, Arken and Athalon all have ties to china. Must have a smallish objective lens because it has to clear my express sights. MOA or MIL - doesn't matter as I won't be dialing this in the field. I prefer a SFP, but FFP is ok if the reticle is thin. I'd like to stay under $1000, under $800 is better.
CameraLand's site doesn't break down the features like the old SWFA site used to. That's why I'm asking what do you guys suggest?

300y ladder with 223/80.5 Berger/N540

Took my R700 223 Wylde with Bartlein HV 28" 8T and .080" FB out this morning and did a quick 9 shot ladder at 300 yards. Get an idea of pressure/velocity and find the upper node.

80.5g Bergers, approx .020 off, COAL 2.485", N540, Rem 7.5 and 2x fired Lapua brass. Shoulders bumped .002" and neck tension also .002"

It left me with more questions than answers, and didn't really show anything definitive in my opinion. The overall group wasn't bad, about 1 MOA for all 9 shots, but no real correlation to velocity/impacts either. Also, the jump in velocity of 70fps from 24.1 (2876) to 24.3 (2946) had me thinking I was around max, but there were no obvious signs of pressure anywhere. The jump from 24.3 to 24.5 was pretty normal again at 35fps. Not sure if I should creep up in .1g increments to find max with the velocity I'm already at, but I have a feeling there might be a node at that 24.5 (2980) area.

I also had something super odd happen and I can't explain it or figure it out. While trying to get my seating depths figured out, I had 3 extra rounds all loaded at 23.5 Only difference was 1 was really short at 2.4" and the other 2 were pretty dang close to where they were suppose to be at around 2.480". I figured I'd use the shortest one for a cold bore and see where it impacted at 300 and get a good zero to go off. Velocity read 2811fps. Ok no problems there. So I shoot the 9 shot ladder and the 23.5 charge showed 2829fps. OK still doing fine. Finished up the ladder and still had those extra 2 cartridges loaded at I decided to use them up on the 500 yard gong and get some more numbers from the garmin. I was shocked when the 1st read 3063fps. No hard bolt lift, cases look fine, primer looked fine, so I shot the last one and it was 3053fps. Again, no obvious signs of pressure. But my main concern and question here is how on earth was there a 225fps discrepancy in velocity with those 2 shots at 23.5 from the previous 2 at 23.5? I individually weighed each charge on a balance beam and I'm certain the Garmin is ok.

I was shooting for 2950fps with no pressure, as that seems about right for an 80g bullet and 28" barrel. I'm thinking 3050fps is definitely over pressure, even though I'm not seeing the tall tale signs. And I'm not even totally sure what to think of those 2 rounds that hit 3050fps at that low charge weight anyway.

Anyway I'd love to hear your guys thoughts and where you would go from here? Still better than a good day at work, but still a little frustrated also...

Accurate beam scales

I have the chargemaster link and want an accurate beam scale to verify my charges. What's a consistent and accurate beam scale? I have an rcbs m1000 I think its called and it's straight trash. I zero it out then use a check weight and it's way off. I want a solid beam scale that I can use for a while to verify my chargemaster loads while I save up for the fx120i down the road.
Any suggestions?

Victrix Venus T Mags

Im looking to buy Mags for my Victrix Venus T 6.6CM but am struggling to confirm what fits - any advice from experience here?

Im struggling to find original mags so I asked Victirx and they replied:

Regarding your inquiry, while the Victrix Venus T is based on a Remington 700 footprint, please note that our magazines are proprietary. As such, we cannot guarantee full compatibility with aftermarket magazines, including AICS or AW types.

Im hoping some one here is ahead of me and worked out what works - Im currently looking at AI AICS Mags with A419 bases but want to ensure they fit before I ship them to South Africa.
