Best practice for installing a barrel nut pre-fit on a SA Solus?

Hey Everyone. I just ordered a Solus Obsidian action on discount from Midway and Im waiting on an order from NSS for a Criterion small shank Savage 110 barrel nut pre-fit chambered in 308 Win (I also ordered a squared savage barrel nut/wrench from NSS along with headspace gauges).

Note I dont have a barrel vice and criterion doesn’t recommend using one when installing a barrel nut pre-fit. They recommend the NSS action vice. I normally would go that route but when I was ordering the barrel James at NSS had mentioned his standard NSS action wrench won’t fit the solus action due to integrated pic rail so I need to use the internal solace action wrench to secure the action when mounting the barrel/torquing the nut. This makes sense, but the question I’m left with is how do I actually incorporate the internal action wrench into the install process?

I ask b/c according to an Aero rep's post on reddit, if installing a barrel with a barrel nut, simply use the Solus Vice jaws, if installing a shouldered prefit, use the internal action wrench.

AD_4nXd6uxzPn3eq9f4vkUVVWJd7SAhekCzx83ysIOn5ZO0skrLRLGsG6JoLawLIcafJhTD6ge2XLiYrfBQ5cVhJ-xCPDA-oZabvMRR2OpzBsi13-LTniI2l4ujblFX1Cz-rru__XgaVwg

When searching online I found this savage prefit barrel install tutorial video by Criterion which is great but they are able to use the NSS action wrench since their install is for a savage action not a solus action with integrated pic rail. The steps they follow are different compared to a Solus action that can't use the NSS action wrench.

Here are the 2 options I'm considering (macro level steps):
  1. (Aero rep's method) Clamp the action in a vice (using the Solus Vice jaws), set headspace, torque the barrel nut to spec, check headspace again with go/no-go
  2. Or do I incorporate the internal action wrench so that the action doesn’t get deformed when torqueing the barrel nut even though the action is secured in the vice jaw inserts? For example:
    1. Clamp action in vice with Solus Vice jaws
    2. Set headspace, then hand tighten barrel nut, check headspace again with go/no-go
    3. Unclamp action from vice, clamp the squared end of the solace action wrench into vice then slide action onto the other side of wrench fully engaging with the lugs
    4. Torque the barrel nut to spec, check headspace again with go/no-go
Or am I way off and you suggest completely different steps to follow?

This is my first bolt action build so I'm used to following the steps for installing AR-15 barrels (that use M4 barrel extensions, barrel nuts, etc.) that definitely need the upper receiver internally secured (with something like the Midwest Industries Upper Receiver Rod clamped into a vice then slide upper receiver over the rod) before torqueing the barrel nut. In option 2 above I was essentially thinking of using the solace action wrench (after setting the headspace) very similar to how I use the Midwest Industries upper receiver rod when installing AR barrels.

Any help/feedback would be much appreciated, thanks!

Rifle was built by Kevin Cram at Montour County Rifles. It was throated for the Berger 180's to maximize case capacity and be at the lands when loading. The Dummy Round is set so the beginning of the boat tail is right at the neck/shoulder juncture of the case. I'd tell you some of the groups this thing has shot at distance but you wouldn't believe me anyways....lets just say it's a HAMMER! Kevin deserves the crdit for it though..I'm just the driver...

Official MDT 6BR Magazine Thread

Hey Everyone, @MDT_Josh here with @MDT_OFFICIAL to talk about our newly released MDT Metal 6BR 12 round magazines! We've mentioned these magazines in a handful of other threads and answered some questions, but I'd like to group all of them into one here. We're really excited to see the support for them already and are happy to be able to support those of you running the BR variants in repeater actions.

For previous discussions, comments and questions see here and here as well as some others.

I have tried to answer a lot of your questions in the descriptions of the magazines as I will post below, but we will also be doing some videos on the mags soon. Let us know what you guys and gals think, what you want to know and how we can help you out!

- Josh

Magazine Description from Website:

"MDT AICS-pattern metal magazines are manufactured from high strength steel, nitride-finished and coated with Cerakote Elite for ultimate durability and performance.

The 6mm BR magazine is offered for the 6mm BR and family of cartridges, and are available in 12 round capacity.

These magazines are designed with a unique Double Stack to Single Feed (DSSF) transition design for reduced overall height compared to the industry standard.

12-Round Magazines for 6mm:

  • 3.055” Outside Length
  • 2.570” max cartridge overall length (COAL) with binder plate and spacer
  • 4.61” Rear Height
All of our magazines include 2 internal ribs that help reduce friction between the cartridge and magazine body and provide a smooth transition from a double stack to single feed at the top of the magazine.

6MM CALIBER MAG
From testing, we have established that these magazines will work with the following calibers:

  • 6mm BR Norma
  • 6mm BRA
  • 6mm BRX
  • 6 mm Dasher
  • 22 BR
MDT 6BR Metal Mag

Additionally, through testing, we have found that these magazines ARE NOT COMPATIBLE WITH the following actions:

  • Curtis Custom's Axiom and Vector
  • GAP Tempest
  • Ultimatum Deadline
  • and most other commonly available, aftermarket 3-lug actions"

Lifelong shooter/hunter from Oklahoma

I have been hunting and shooting since I was six or so and now, I am soon to be 78 in August. I have always preferred centerfire weapons but now I have "graduated" to .22 LR because I had cataract surgery last year and my back always hurts, and my father-in-law passed in 2005 after we hunted together every Oklahoma deer season for 30 years in a row. My dad was a bird hunter (who died in 1979 when I was 31) so I grew up shooting quail and doves and a few ducks and teal until 1969 when I graduated from college, got married and enlisted in the Oklahoma Army National Guard for 8 years. While bird hunting with my trusty Stevens .410 single shot full choke shotgun, I had to limit out with 12 or 13 shots, 1/2 a box, of shells back then. After a few years, ten shells were enough even though dad and his hunting buddies burned several boxes of 12 GA shells every time we went out and congratulated themselves on always limiting out, too. Made me a better shot, though. Shot Expert in the Guard with the M1, M14, M16 A1 and M16 A2 as well as the M60. The M14 and M60 were always my favorite weapons and the M16s were just awful IMHO. I am left-eye dominant, but I am right-handed so there were always these tiny little red circles on my right cheek every time I fired the M16A1, the Matel special, and I had to keep my top shirt collar buttoned to keep the darn hot brass from burning my throat and chest, too. After a few years I was the company supply sergeant and was in charge of the ammo detail once when we went to Ft. Sill for annual familiarization and qualification. We drew too much ammo, and the Brass did not want to admit they could not count, so we had 1,000 rounds or so to burn before we left the range after everyone had qualified, so the officers were John Wayne-ing it and firing an M16 on full-automatic and having a good time. There were about five magazines left when they quit and told me to finish off the last hundred rounds. I had fired a couple of short bursts when the rifle jammed, and I ejected the magazine and hit the forward assist lever while having the weapon pointed down and down-range. A round partially seated in the chamber cooked off and blew the bolt out of the past my right ear and the discharge filled my hand with unburned powder in 1/8th inch specks. Hurt like heck. I had fired only 7 rounds plus the one that cooked off. Lucky it did not kill me or someone else. The Brass said I'd have to sign a statement of charges for the rifle, but I told them to forget it. They are the ones who abused it, not me. Never heard what happened to that. Probably got an armorer to say it was a malfunction. That is the only mishap with a firearm I have ever had, but I still remember it well. Hunted mostly in Oklahoma for white tail, in Colorado for mule deer and elk, and Wyoming for Pronghorn and mule deer. So, no one I want to hunt with anymore, too many injuries from motorcycle and automobile accidents, two full replacement hip jobs, and eyes that don't see as well as they did have stopped my hunting. Hence, the .22 revolvers, pistols and rifles although I still have bolt actions in .308 and .223/5.56X45; a 30-30 single shot New Englander; a High Point 995 carbine; a .50 caliber muzzle loader; and some .380 acp and 9MM pistols; plus a couple of 12 GA pumps. Sold my 7MM Rem Mag 1885 High Wall Browning single shot (my favorite deer rifle) for more than I paid for it after 15 years of use. Don't look for competition .22 LR shooting, just to do the best I can with what I have. Glad to be her and expect to learn a lot.

Suppressors KGM RF22

A few years ago I bought an R556 from KGM and it came with an RF22.
Due to… reasons, I haven’t had much opportunity to shoot with it until last month.
While sighting in the Ruger mkIII, I noticed that my bullets would keyhole.
I took off the can and fired the pistol and no keyhole.
So I took the can apart and noticed it was much easier to get the front cap off than the rear cap.
Looking at baffles, I noticed strike marks.
I reassembled the can, taking effort to tighten both caps as much as I could.
Upon shooting the keyholes were still happening.
My question is; has anyone had this type of experience with this happening with a KGM RF22 before?
I plan to reach out to them to see if I can send it back for inspect and repair, if they do that.
Thanks for feedback.

Flush cup considerations?

Can you experienced folks share your thinking/ considerations regarding flush cup type (when you use Full rotation, Limited, or Nonrotating cups?) and mount locations?

I have seen folks mount them on both sides of the bolt, sometimes with rear swivel high, mid and low on the stock. Usually see the front mount toward the front of the stock, but have also seen them mounted toward the rear of the forearm and being used to grip the sling as a shooting aid.

I am about to add some QD flush cups to a bolt hunting rifle. I have very limited experience with them and have always had my sling mounted in the traditional location. Figured you folks could steer me toward the most comfortable/ practical setup.
