Shoulder / Headspacing questions 6.5 Creedmoor

The issue at hand is that I cannot bump the shoulder because my die is bottomed out. Redding Competition Dies with Shell holder kit.

I am using a .400 dia Hornady bushing on my caliper. This will allow me to take a measurement from the base of the case to the shoulder tangent (where dia is 0.400”)

The saami specs shows the base to shoulder 1.5438” I measure my 3x fired Lapua brass and I have 1.5365” – so I am still 0.0073” from the shoulder after brass is fired formed. (I have sorted my fired brass I have base to shoulder tangent from 1.5355"-1.5365" with 90% at 1.5360") IS this even possible? Fire forming should espand that case to occupy the entire chamber(?)

My case length is 1.911 so I know that I have not grown my brass with only 3 fires.

The information shows that brass has not expanded to fit my chamber. OR my chamber does not meet specs and is under sized. Therefore full length sizing is not possible because the die bottoms out before contact to the shoulder has occurred.

Once the shoulder has made contact I will bump 0.002”

Does my theory seem correct – that I just haven’t fired my brass enough to occupy the headspace or Seekins undersizes their chambers.

I could have a shell holder milled ground down to prevent bottoming out and this would expose the truth of the situation.

THOUGHTS???

300 Win Mag Unexpected Muzzle Velocity/Pressure

I was looking for a load for 190gn SMKs. I wanted a powder with a little more top end than H1000 or 4350. Since I couldn’t find any Reloader I decided to try N560. It looked good on paper (Sierra loading manual). I did find a recommended load of 67gn which is .3gn below starting load. I loaded up a few rounds to try out. Components were: 190SMK, N560, once fired Federal Mk 248 brass, and FGGM magnum primers. The group and velocities were pretty close until the last shot where I shot my suppressor cover – that dropped the velocity 200fps. Average mv was 2869.5fps. According to the manual this is what I should be getting at 72.6gn. Primers were flattened but still had rounded edges and no cratering. I loaded up 10 rounds of 67gn and a ladder going up .3 grains per step. This time I brought a new 300WM that had about 40 rounds through it - basically the same barrel – both 23.6”. This time the average mv was 3126.6, ES 10.8, and SD 3.5. The primers were flattened and slight firing pin cratering but no wiping or heavy bolt lift/extraction. 3126fps is higher than any published load in the Sierra manual. Needless to say, I didn’t shoot the ladder. The 10 shot group was 1.2” including 2 fliers. Minus the fliers the group was .34” @ 100yds. Unless it was due to more resistance from the barrel, I haven’t a clue why the velocities were that high or why the difference between the two guns. My other 300 has less than 200 rounds through it so I wouldn’t think it would make that much difference. Since it is military brass I should be able to go 1gn below starting load without worrying about a flash detonation unless that is what is causing the primer flattening and cratering. Does anyone have experience with N560? Velocities, SD, and ES were measured with a Garmin C1 Pro. Thanks E_T_G

Load Development for 1k yard supersonic 308 - 168GR TMK - 20 inch barrel

Hello,

I thought I would document my journey of developing a supersonic to 1k+ load for my B14 HMR. A key consideration was the limited barrel length of 20". Limiting at least in the context of meeting my goal with some of the lower BC bullets I had on hand. I initially started target shooting about 4 years ago. My first target rifle was a savage 10T-SR with a 24x DBT I barely shot it. I then got a fantastic deal on a B14 HMR in 308. which in the past year I have really enjoyed.

My initial shooting was with a batch of 100x Hornady 178GR BTHP match factory ammo. It was around 1.5 MOA (5 shot groups unless noted otherwise).

I loaded some 168 GR A-max's after that which were accurate at 0.6MOA at 2628 FPS on 43.7GR of Varget. However the commonality between most of the 308 factory ammo and bullets I found was they were not supersonic out to 1k. So I began load development based on the 168gr TMK. I have shot the 77gr TMK before in my 223 bolt gun and was pleasantly surprised. Further to this the BC's were very high.

Rifle: Bergara B14 HMR in 308 20"
Optic: 24x DBT

I was not feeling particularly stable. Below were my initial results.

0.75 MOA is good enough for me. My goal is to hit a 10inch gong at 1k yards. So that gets me in the ballpark. My velocity goal was 2600 and was hoping for near single digit SD's. So both of those goals were met. SD of 7 is great by my standards.

I have started doing larger increments with my initial load development than in the past and it has become a preference. I also do not believe there is much reason to go below 0.2GR increments with the sample size of 5 shot groups. I would expect a 10 shot group minimum to yield repeatable results.

With a ballpark figure of 44.2 GR and COAL of 2.870 feel I have a great starting point. I am beyond fortunate having access to a farm to shoot on 50% of the year when the corn isn't too high, I probably shoot 20 weekends per year, or more. hopefully within a couple weeks I can get out and do this load dev. Below is my next loading table.

1706627091025.png

I usually am unable to hit the rifling using the standard magazine since I primarily reload 223 and 308 for AR length mags. However in the case of this bullet at 2.887 I am still a long way from the rifling. I like fabricating unnecessary problems for myself, and worrying about things that don't actually matter. so the change in COAL is probably not needed. They will fit in a steel MDT magazine, but not a standard plastic magazine. but that was the primary change this time around. seating the bullets out 0.015 longer.

Within my next update I intend to include; testing results of the second table, a measured distance of jump, And hopefully a final selection on what to load for my 1000 yards goal. Also note I am using nickel plated brass because it makes me feel fancy.
