Beginning to do some research on building a DIY deer cooler. Found a device called Coolbot (Coolbot webpage) that turns a window AC unit into refrigeration unit for the walk in. Looking at 2 options, build a 6'x'6'x7' box(and insulate it) and put it in the corner of my shop or find a small 6x8 shed and insulate it and place in on a concrete pad behind my shop. It would likely only run a few weeks a year and have one or two deer in it at a time. Deer processors are going by the way side and only open certain hours and days now days. I have processed deer many times as I have a friend of the family who has a walk in cooler but our schedules don't line up always and I hate to be only guy invading his shop to process a deer. All this got me searching for deer cooler options that didn't cost 5 grand. Figured fellow 'Hide members were crafty and maybe some of you have built a DIY cooler, if so share your experience. Not sure which direction I will go but I like doing my own processing and think maybe I would get back out hunting more earlier in the year if I didn't have to rely on others or processors for my game.


Thoughts I have had.

• Inside may be more forgiving on the AC unit during early season.
• Outside saves my shop space and would look just like a shed.
• Looking for a used walk in door as this will be the hardest to get a good seal. (open to input)
• Insulation is key: only foam or sprayed in, no fiberglass.
• This all hinges on the Coolbot being a viable option - Concerns AC unit could freeze up.
• My wife already pointed out I have shot a deer yet this year.
• Would need to pick up a grinder.

Advice or experience?

I have 3/4" ar500 that I've used for 300-600 yards successfully when toying with my 50bmg. It takes the hits without a mark except for the edge shots obviously.

My friend wants to try his 50bmg out at longer ranges and that target is too small. We will be using ball ammo (So that means even though it is not AP, they usually have a mild steel core). All targets are swinging.

What distance do I have to put my 3/8" ar500 to not bow it or leave marks on it? (We aren't talking about hundreds of rounds, and I accept that if there is an edge shot it will deform it there).

What about for my 3/8" ar400 plate? I have one that I use for 1000+ yards for my 338lm and it has worked great. But not sure if it will hold up at even a mile for 50bmg.

I am fully aware and have been preaching for years that suppressors do not belong on a precision rimfire if your chasing the razors edge of accuracy. I know that adding weight to a rimfire barrel is a big roll of the dice as far as accuracy, especially an ever changing weight. However with that said I am considering buying another rimfire suppressor for shooting out of my garage so I don’t have to wear ear pro & have it pull double duty on a small game rifle.

I have not been paying attention to the precision rimfire world the last few years and am curious if there has been any new rimfire specific suppressors released that are known for maintaining a high level of accuracy. I think the go to was the Mask and TB takedown, I have also seen good results from the old tried and true sparrow. What should I be looking at these days?

Hey yall. Figured I should make an introduction post. I’ve been shooting long range for about 10 years… I’m 23 so that doesn’t mean I’m very good haha. Anyways, mainly just on here to try to get more into the sport. I’m in the process of upgrading my Winchester Model 70 300 WM to something a little more sub-Moa. Also have a 300 Jarret and an M200 408. So, if y’all got any advice on how to get into competing, caliber suggestions, or just wanna see some data related shooting content let me know (I studied data science and statistics so I get really in DOPE). Obviously gonna be researching on a lot on the forum as most of my questions are already answered but just figured this would make a good introduction post.

I snagged a CZ 457 Varmint MTR to build for NRL22 Base class and PRS rimfire production class. I've been shooting Open with a T1X and having a ton of fun but a second rifle and the option to shoot base class sometimes drew me in. I'm going to build it out similar to the Area 419 fully loaded setup but I don't really like the idea of putting t-nuts in the stock since I plan to hang some weights on the rail and would prefer to inset a metal bar in the bottom of the barrel channel to mount the rail to but I noticed the base class rules say no internal weights.

Anyone know if this would count as a weight or would it be able to be called mounting hardware?
