Im in the market for a tripod that will work with a Swaro HD straight body spotter. Mostly be using in prone and off a bench. Recreation shooter here. Im not willing to spend the money on an Ashbury. Ran across this one on Google. http://www.tacticaltripod.com/

Anyone tried these? Im very leary of anything being sold with "Sniper" in the name. The camo also looks cheesy and they dont sell the black version anymore. If this is a nogo, what are some othe options. I posted a question in the optics forum with no response.

Re: sniper ops tripod

Many will swear by Manfrotto legs and something like a Manfrotto 322 ball head. Plan on spending $300 or so. No sense going cheap just to save money at the expense of potentially damaging a high end costly spotter.

If smaller and more light weight, yet very stable is a priority, you'll likely need to spend even more.

OP,

I've read about the one you referenced, but have no experience with it. Ask yourself if you truely want one that low? Will work fine for when prone or when the scope is setting on a bench. The Manfrotto will give you the option to be able to stand behind the scope such as when spotting for game or another shooter, plus work right beside a bench, and go prone if you need it too. Just gives you alot more options - in my experience and opinion, so take that for what it's worth.

BHphoto or Camraland will most likely have a package deal on legs and head for less than the one you referenced.

The one benifit I can see since you did reference a straight scope is that a very small foot print would make it easier up on the bench. Either way, you'll likely be forced to move off the gun to get behind the spotter, so that may be a moot point.

Re: sniper ops tripod

I appreciate the input guys. Definately pointed me in the right direction. I can never find anything by using the Search function. Always bring up things toatlly unrelated.

Anyway, I think Im gonna try the PRS large. Looks like it can do most of what I want. And, I dont think that I want to put the spotter directly on the bench anyway. Just cant resist the temptation of the PRS price. If I dont like it, Im not out too much. Then we can use it for our camera, and Ill buy a Manfretto to try out.

Thanks again guys, I truly appreciat it.

If you don't like the PRS tripod, you won't have a problem selling it on here. It's not flimsily made but well built.

Re: sniper ops tripod

I actually have the tripod you mentioned and I like it a lot for hunting. It's not the lightest, but it packs up very small. The "camo" is just anodizing, sort of like the cosmetic stuff you see on paintball guns and the like but it fits in surprisingly well with the terrain I hunt. Worst case krylon the hell out of it.

My only real beef with it is that I had to put some anti-seize on the threads otherwise they'd squeak when screwing together the sections. If you're shooting prone it's not an issue as you only use the built-in section.

The thing I like most is that it's scalable. If I know I'm just going to be lying down all day I take just the base and it's fine. If I'm gonna be standing I take extra sections. And the base is small yet stable. It's stable enough to hold my Mk4 spotters and PLRF-10c.

The thing I don't like about the Manfrotto is that in order to get low you've gotta splay the legs way out. On an open line it's not a big deal, but lying on a rocky outcropping it's about the biggest pain in the ass in the world. I used to use one on a regular basis, but now I really only bring it out when I'm standing all day spotting for multiple shooters. The ball head is convenient, but honestly it's shitty as a field tripod unless you plan on standing all day.

I have no experience with the PRS ones but by all accounts they are excellent tripods.

Re: sniper ops tripod

so i like the prs cradles, but they use silk tripods. so i have thought about their pss2 with a silk or other tripod. ebay has tripods of all kinds. you just got to look and follow. know the names to get and the ones to avoid. the cradle is the part you want. spotters are so light it dose not take much of a tripod for them.
just my 2 cents not authority.
