Night Vision FLIR T-50 Initial Set-Up

That big sow that charged me got a face full of lead instead, will go out and try to find her this morning, also one other shoat got away into the tall grass of the pond where there are two eight foot gators, so maybe the gators will enjoy some bacon today.

That SIG 716 Precision with the Elcan 1.5-6X-42mm scope runs perfect with the FLIR T-70.

Holy shit Skypup! Now you have Little Miss Piggy pissed off at you for all that past killin' they come a chargin'.Holy shit Skypup! Now you have Little Miss Piggy pissed off at you for all that past killin' they come a chargin'.....NICE!

Hey get back on your meds :)

Just found hog #6 from last nights thermal shootout, still looking for big sow #7 but it is beginning to rain....

Will be hunting songdogs tonight over fresh offal after cleaning all those porkers up and recovering one of the .30 cal bullets, hope to put one in a dog tonight!

I still use the T-50, it is a workhorse and not a safe queen. The T-70 is much easier to use when filming video as the video outlet connector does not stick out at a 90 degree angle.

Did you all watch the video?

I shot all those hogs alone myself, I think I took 10 shots and hit seven hogs, recovered six of them, the wounded sow got away after she charged me...

Hell yes we (I) watched the video! Just awesome Tom!!! I am just in total awe of the action you see quite regularly! You have QUITE an infestation!!!!

You gotta share your recipe for feral pork tenderloin and bacon that makes the wild hog meat tasty. I haven't had much luck in making it palatable. Tips?

I nailed another songdog at 225 yards last night with the ELCAN/FLIR T-70 in pitch dark at 225 yards.

Took over twenty minutes of calling and he kept coming in and out of the far tree line and would never stand still, very nervous.

Finally had a clear sight picture of him on the edge of the tree line and put the center crosshair dot on his heart, one handloaded 130 grain Barnes TSX went through him and he dropped dead in his tracks.

Really can't blame the poor song dog, I guess if I were a coyote or a hog in my backyard, I would be nervous too...

Seeing as how there as been great interest in FLIR's Thermal Weapon Sights and they are expensive, I figured I would include this information regarding FLIR's proprietary TAU 2 Vanadium Oxide microbolometers (the heart of the instruments) longevity for posterity.

"The new 17 micron uncooled Vanadium Oxide FLIR Tau 2 core was designed with a mean time between failure (MTBF) >30,000 hrs operation."

"Assuming a usage duty cycle of 80% across all fielded Taus (actually includes many environments and use cases) the MTBF is calculated at 12.1 years (operating hours) with a 90% confidence level."

I would assume the older model Tau cores with the 25 micron array would have similar endurance.......

Took a nice head shot on this bambi killer @ 125 yards tonight, DRT.

You don't want to see the other side of him where the 130 grain Barnes TSX exited...

Have a nice take down thermal video to work on too, will post later...

Was he eating leftover pork?

He had dragged the residual backbone of a butchered hogs about 200 feet up into the tree line where I first picked him up in the thermal video the night before. I dragged what was left of the carcass back down to where I shot him, I first picked him up where he had dragged it to and then his nose followed the trail down to where the remains were.

I was super pissed at this coyote, I have had two red shouldered hawks in a big nest for the last decade back behind my barn where they reproduced each year for many years, the bastard killed both the male and female hawks and I found their feathers all over where the hog carcass had been. Sure am glad he did not get any of my Bald Eagles, and now he won't for sure....

Tonight a giant 375 pound boar walked out in front of the SIG 716 and FLIR Thermal, it was his last mistake.

Will post a FLIR Thermal video of him meeting a 7.62mm when I get a chance to work it up.....

Skypup- what did the Barnes 130gr do to them? I am considering this round- just ordered 150 of them. Reason I ask is I shoot deer and pigs. Fine. But shoot cats too and dont want to ruin pelts. I need to see the other side! My SCAR17 is my go to gun and looking for a cat + pig load.....

The Barnes 130 grain TSX entered behind the shield and scapula and went through his upper thoracic cavity and exited the other side, hardly any blood at all as he was exsanguinated into the lung cavity. I only hit him on the first shot, although I shot once again at him when he took off, thermal death video of him coming up....

SkyPup, always appreciate the great pictures and videos from your hunts. I think we are all living vicariously through you in hopes to own just some of the top notch equipment you have!

Shoot straight brother!

Pork Chop chewing coyote "almost" made it into the New Year but the 7.62mm SIG 716 Precision with the FLIR T-70 barked a handloaded Barnes 130 grain TSC copper slug out 175 yards through the dinner party.......thermal kill video to come once I get a chance to edit it out.

HAPPY NEW YEAR TOO ALL!!!

I took a huge male coyote right before Christmas. At night with the pvs26. He was at least 70 lbs. The scale said 71.4

Night before that I shot a 55lb female. They are everywhere right now!

A normal adult coyote here in Florida is 30-35 pounds, I have shot three Alpha males that were over 50 pounds but that is as big as they get here.

FLIR T-70 nails another elusive song dog @ 225 tonight, they are just dropping out of the cold winter sky around the farm here....

Think I got a nice video of the kill to but will have to check it out and edit it down to post later...

Tom,

I bet this cold weather really has all the critters out!! My offer still stands if you need any help relocating the hogs from your wooded areas to a nearby grill!!!

Here is where a first class thermal really shines when nothing else will work.

200 yards, light rain, heavy fog, zero moon or stars, 50*F out 100% humidity:

FLIR Government Systems is working on finishing up the T-70 units contracted for the US Military and later on this coming Spring they will have an upgrade program for current T-70 users to upgrade their units to the T-75 working instrument via a new 100mm germanium lens system and new software (internal digital magnification of 1.0, 2.0 and 4.0 on the T-75 upgrade).

I was able to look through a working T-75 at the Shot Show at the FLIR Government Systems booth and after having used the T-70 quite a bit, I was very impressed with the increased range, resolution, and magnification of the T-75 unit with minimal loss of FOV with the big lens system.

Here they are side by side:
