300 PRC update

You want the 3.850 length magazines (COAL 3.78ish) for 300WM, which both MDT and Accurate make. Alternatively you can get 3.850 338LM magazines and a feedlip adjustment tool.

Thank you so much. As far as the bottom metal just make sure it’s CIP? What’s a good brand to use for Remington 700? Badger seems out stock. What’s my next best options.

I posted in the PX but I’ll put it here as well .... looking for a proof 300 PRC prefit (shouldered) for a SR3/TL3 ! Hit me up if you know of anyone parting out . Thanks

That may be good ammo but it uses Hornady brass and is $127 a box. The Berger 338LMs are $83 a box, use Lapua brass and are very consistent for factory ammo. The Hornady ELDM isn't bad - ~$40 a box, SDs run between 15 and 20. Handloading is the best option but I am not ready yet, too much life going on. I'll get it together this winter.

Thought I'd give an update on my 8x68S brass adventure.

- I decided to try out Berger 230s. Me likee.
- I ran them at 10 off the lands and think I found my load with RL-26. Remember that the case has a little less volume than Hornady.
- 72 gr of RL-26 gave me 2849 fps average, an ES of 6 and an SD of 2.6 over 5 shots.
- Will be heading out this weekend to validate the load some more.

Folks I'm getting excited, so my ARC Archimedes long action should be arriving in the next few weeks, and I just received my invoice from Manners for my T4A-Team with CIP DBM Mini-Chassis. Barrel is already in house, just waiting for the action before I contact @DAVETOOLEY and send it in for chambering. Barrel is a Bartlein 1-9 twist, looking at 28" in finished length.

My Bartlein 1-9tw at 28" finished....is stabilizing the 230gr A-Tips very well.....with 78.5gr of Retumbo...at 900+ ft of elevation...60% humidity...80F....while standing on my left leg only and holding my lip to the right.

you think you are excited now?....just wait until you pull that trigger :)

I went the 300 PRC improved by rich Sherman route. It’s been talked about earlier but just got time to do a ladder with the 215 Berger’s. No pressure at 3100fps using H1000

I just put together a 300 prc on a bighorn and am starting to research what bullets are ideal in a sammi chamber in regards to case depth. I saw a picture of a 215 hybrid and at .020 off it seems like very little bullet in the neck. I have a Wyatt’s 3.850 box so I don’t think coal will be an issue .... can any one post some pictures of the 215-230 range bullets and where they sit in the case mouth ? Any starting points for loads would be greatly appreciated as well !!

About to buy that same set , what bushings did you get ?

I bought the hydro die to form 8x68S (the die on the left with the water bottle) and the custom die because I'm having consistency issues with the Hornady die I've been using.

For the 8x68S, I use a .341 bushing to do the first sizing, then I ream out the inside of the neck to get rid of the extra brass that got forced in there from the sizing, then I use a .336 to get .002" of neck tension for the final. I've got two videos on YouTube showing how to do all this. Honestly, it's very easy to fire form 8x68S, and the RWS brass I use is much, much more consistent than Hornady and lasts a lot longer.

I actually have a full set of 30 cal bushings going from .329 to .341.

Just loaded up a 230 OTM on the left, coal of 2.630 and a 230 SMK on the right with a coal of 2.750. They look like sewing needles

Somewhat random question... anyone with a 300 PRC build using an action with a large firing pin (.078"-0.080") experiencing primer cratering?

I'm going to spin up a 300 PRC barrel for my AXMC which has a large firing pin, and I'm wondering if I should have LRI bush the bolt and turn the firing pin down to 0.062" before I have a barrel chambered just to avoid the possibility of any cratered primers.

I sent my action and trigger in when this all started, and Justin just called and said it is ready to ship back. New cocking piece and turned down bolt body.
Is there any reason to not modify to small pin?

$175 I can spend on chambering instead? :p

Larger concern is lack of warranty support from AI if anything goes wrong with the bolt down the road-- no free warranty work on the bolt if you bush it. I don't expect any issues though.

I'm probably just going to have it bushed anyways, but wanted to see if cratering with a large firing pin with the 300PRC was a concern before shipping the bolt off.

Usually people are busing firing pins so they can shoot cases with small rifle primers like the 6.5 Creedmoor. I'm not sure it does anything for you in a case that only uses large rilfe primers like the 300 PRC. Maybe someone has another opinion, but I wouldn't waste the time or money.

Little range report from a fresh build ! I replaced a 28 Nosler barrel on my SR3 with a proof savage prefit and am pretty impressed so far. Here are shots 20-40 with factory 212’s and 225’s. Can’t wait to see how some 230 A-tips pan out.

Did you get any velocities?

My rifle shoots the 212 factory ammo in the .3’s at 2830 FPS.

I pulled apart 2 each from two different boxes. All four had exactly 78.5 powder with 215 primers.

I thought it was H1000 until I shot it over the magnetospeed and got 2830 FPS average. Maybe it’s retumbo?

Thanks, I have a 26” bartlein 3B, 9 twist with over 200 rounds fired, seems slow compared to yours.

First off, this thread has cost me a bunch of money. I want you all to know that. It's going to cost me more money, as I have decided to start getting parts together for a new rifle build in 300 PRC that essentially matches my 6mm BRA.

To summarize:

- Defiance Deviant long action
- Bix trigger
- Manners PRS 2 stock
- Same barrel as I have on my current 300 PRC - Bartlein 1-9, 28", but heavy palma instead of M24.
- APA Lil B brake
- Badger DBM
- MPA one-piece mount
- Arca rail

I figure it will happen some time next year as I want a specific camo on the Manners and am willing to wait for it. And with Manners, you have to wait... and wait... and wait...

I’ll just post these up as well .... I’m always curious when putting together a new setup.

Sammi proof chamber

230 A-tips touching @ 3.830
212 ELD-X touching @ 3.6–

Just ran the 230 OTMs and 230 SMKs with H1000 and R26 thru the 300 Sherman mag. The summary is 3000 FPS with R26 and 2900 FPS with H1000. Both bullets ran within 30 FPS using identical loads

I'd like to shoot more...but it seems I can't find Retumbo, RL26, nor H1000 in stock. I found some Unicorn dust...but they laughed at me when I asked if they had any of the above powders coming in soon.

Anyone played with Vihtavuori N565 yet?

I have not, can't find that that one. If i didn't have any of the above maybe H4831sc would work. it's definitely going to be slower but better than nothing.

For some reason, my burn rate chart doesn't list RL 26....however... N570 is slightly slower than Retumbo...which I've had excellent luck with...and H1000...which several of you have had good luck with. With my 28" barrel...N570 may work real well. I was thinking N565 for the 230gr A-Tips...but I can try the N570.

Is anyone shooting 300 prc out of a shorter barrel? I’m thinking about building one with a 20” but wondering if it’s worth it.

And here I was thinking I should have gone 30" instead of 28" and you guys want to go all the way down to 20 inches. Is this to lower the weight for a hunting rifle? I have been experimenting with slower powders...now you go shorter.....something to think about....

I'm going to guess...going from a 24" to 20" is going to be able 140/sec reduction in muzzle velocity...based off my experiment with 308 and 300WM.

7lb hunting rifle is the goal

What action and what barrel contour you going with? You going to flute the bolt and the barrel? What stock do you think you will use? I may try to do about the same thing...but in a 6.5PRC for hunting...and the 300PRC as a ELR gun.

I watched a vid of a guy shooting a moose in the chest with a 6.5PRC..suprised the hell out of me how quick that bull went down. Was trying to turn him for a double lung shot...but took the front and I guess got the heart. I don't hunt anything bigger than elk....so looking at the 6.5PRC for that.

I'd like to smoke a boar with my 300PRC though...I hate piggies.

I’ll either wait for the mega fix and put a proof barrel on that or do a t3 lite with a proof barrel if Q keeps takin their time. A TT 3-15m and ultra 7 should keep the whole setup below 10lbs.

Not sure you guys want 300PRC under 10lbs. I personally prefer hunting magnum rifle around 10lbs. But thats just my opinion everybody is different. Any load data on 230gr A-Tip with H1000?

Heh...I'm not wanting a 300PRC under 20lbs myself...and with an aggressive muzzle break. I think I'm at about 25lbs and going up now.

I haven't found any H1000 in stock anywhere....tried the Magic Fairy Dust store down in the Fairy District....they just laughed at me. Been running Retumbo with the 230gr A-Tips...but now I'm out of Retumbo....and only have 100 rounds loaded :(

Im with you on weight of rifle. 12lbs at least for me even at hunting rifle, so what FPS you getting with Retumbo running 230A-Tip?
