Kestrel Meters Ballistics Official Thread

I have a few Kestrel questions. I have the 5700 Elite;
  1. Gun profiles; If you choose from the bullet library, does that override the manual information? or vise versa? What takes priority?
  2. I'm shooting 136g Lapua Scenar-L's. The manufacturer's website states the G7 BC is .274 but if I use the Kestrel library it changes it to G7 .285. Who do I trust?
  3. Gun Data> Muzzle Velocity>I enter my MV (2,744 @60F). Save. I view MV-Temp table and the Kestrel added it to the chart but as 70F. I zero all the fields and add 60F then save. I check the MV-Temp table and the degrees are not sequiturs? See the attached image, for example, the 90f temp has a slower MV than the 70f MV. Etc...
What am I doing wrong?

You can pick a profile and adjust its BC as long as it’s not their CDM selections.

Try your BC, if it works it works.

I just populate the the MV-temp in the kestrel itself with a high and low.

So your saying one doesn't override the other?
How do you know if your BC "works"?

I would start by trusting the AB G7, and then go through the process shared here multiple times to true your data. 500-600 yards true the MV, then validate dope out to trans and adjust BC if needed.

And how about the non sequitur MV-Temp table?

Picked up a 5700 elite with AB today. Setting the unit up at the store we saw a feature to estimate range to target with the reticle. Now that I’m home playing with the unit I can’t find this feature. Firmware is v1.4, I’m wondering if maybe I updated it when pairing the kestrel with the mobile app and the feature went away or if I just imagined the whole thing.

Got it thanks. Will be using a lrf anyway but thought it was handy to have the calculator built in if I wanted to reticle range.

Yes. Im interested in using the feature. On the rare occasion I shoot unknown distance the only shot of the day that matters is the first one.

I take a lot of time setting up. I'll range that steel now on paper, via Kestrel estimate, and via LRF.

I like the milling skill and want to be better at it.

There was a thread a few years back that had a bunch of through the scope pics of targets so you could try and estimate distance and op would divulge actual range. Kind of fun at the time.

If his through the scope pics were that good he has more patience than I.......or specific engineered gear.

Another temp table question....

I finalized my load today and have the MV for this morning's conditions. Should I put that one data point in the Temp Table or leave the table blank and only enter MV in the Gun Data section?

You can input the data but do not use the table until you have at least 3 entries.

I just bought a SIG 2400BDX and I'm trying to pair it with my Kestrel 5700 (FW 1.39). It pairs but I keep getting the error "Unusable Target Data Received" on the kestrel after I pair it and rang anything. Any suggestions?

Thanks

Whats the max wind speed a kestrel will read? Was outside just now and my 5700 was showing around 20mph and a tree fell over next to me.

From their website:

Winds can be measured on any Kestrel up to 135 mph. NK only guarantees the accuracy of the measurement to be within tolerance up to 89 mph.

Hi @Kestrel Ballistics
When setting up a gun profile in the IOS app, which direction is positive Zero Offset and which direction is negative?
If I have a group that plots .03” right of my point of aim, what do I populate in Zero Offset?

Wait, right is negative? Seems backwards considering you'd use the Left arrow to note an impact to the right?

  1. ZH/ZO – Zero Height (elevation) and Zero Offset (windage) are used when the addition of a suppressor, a change in ammunition, or the addition of night vision optics changes the point of impact of your zero. For example, if adding a suppressor shifts the point of impact of your zero up one inch and to the left half an inch, input 1 for ZH and -0.5 for

Latest firmware is now available. Here are the new changes with Kestrel firmware version 1.41!

  1. Tired of praying that you get a “turn” to register while calibrating your compass? Or getting consistent failures based on how fast you are spinning the Kestrel? Well with this update all you need is to do is turn it consistently for 30 seconds and you’re done! Internal testing has shown that there is no difference in the accuracy of the compass when calibrating using this new method, so it’s a win-win for our customers.
  2. Have you ever wanted the Kestrel to update the wind direction to match a change in the direction of fire? This now can be done with a new setting under the WD submenu. Simply change the new menu item: WD Chg from “Manual” to “w/ DOF” and your WD will no longer remain static. This is helpful when the Kestrel is in a vane mount and using a connectable laser range finder or our app and change wind direction. However there are many reasons why it is important to do a new wind capture for each new shot, so use this setting cautiously. https://kestrelballistics.com/mwdownloads/download/link/id/441/
  3. If you’ve created a gun on the Kestrel and cannot get rid of that pesky asterisk at the start of the profile name, well we removed that for you.
  4. Also all the pre-loaded custom drag models on the 5700 Elite and 5700X have been updated to bullets more commonly used in the field. When creating a gun profile on the Kestrel, scroll the DM to the right to view the pre-loaded custom drag curves.
  5. Finally have some time to kill during the lockdown? With this new update we’ve added the old school Snake game to play. Found under the About menu. Just try to master the Sensei level, good luck!

What is the proper procedure for ensuring the current gun profiles on the Elite are saved after the upgrade? I had 9 profiles both on the Elite and the application - the Kestrel unit profiles were the most recent and trued.

During the update, the unit said transferring profiles, but once complete the Kestrel had no profiles and the application had the old, dated, untrued profiles. Ugghh.

Sorry about that. Before doing the update, it is best to save the profiles to the app from Kestrel first. When the Kestrel turns off after the update, it needs to reconnect to the app to re-load the guns. If you close the app early, the profiles will get lost. If the app is having trouble connecting to Kestrel after it reboots, make sure Bluetooth->Conct is still on PC/MOBILE and please turn Privacy PIN OFF. If you do this, the app should be able to reconnect and re-load the gun profiles.

Thanks. That’s probably the key. I knew I was in trouble when the update reported “Update Failed.”
Apparently, it lost the BT connection after completing the update - nothing I did restored the connection. Though it did reboot and report 1.41.

Sure wish I transferred the profiles first.

Same issues. If anyone is planning to do the update, I'd suggest noting all info on paper or somewhere. The Kestrel basically removed all profiles and even the app lost a couple profiles that I had to try to recreate. I believe I matched the inputs the same as before but my Drops seem off compared to what I have noted in hard copy.

I updated my Kestrel 5700 Elite and
- lost every gun profile
- If I go to: menu -> bluetooth -> Privacy Pin I show a overlaps inscription "Device Connect" (x5)
- in settings mode many description has "..." sign, every should have it?

I have exactly the same problem with overlapping inscriptions in the PIN Menu after updating to 1.41...

Just did the update and it retained all my gun profiles but it changed from yards to meters for some reason. Easy fix but thought it was odd.

I updated mine yesterday. The initial install lost all profiles. I have an iphone and transferred them back from there with app. After this all seemed to be ok but after checking a bit the dopes were extremely erratic. For example when adding 3 mps wind from 3 oClock to target at 500 meters the up/down correction dropped from 3.1 mil to 2.4. When checking the profile and tweaking the numbers in Kestrell it corrected itself. Tryed to transfer profile back to cell and back to kestrell, same again..

Check spin drift and aerodynamic jump...the firmware update resets those values to default. I had to re-zero them out on mine.

I need a little help with the multiple target function.

To set this up lets say there are 3 target I am wanting to get my dope for, they are all different DOF and distances.

I have targets A, B, and C set as active.

I would like to stand at the firing position and capture the wind direction and wind speed, then I would like to use my Leica 3200.com RF binos to range the targets and capture DOF.

How can I capture the wind speed and direction for all 3 targets with doing it 3 times?

I understand that I need to range target A to find the distance and DOF, let it calculate the dope. Then toggle to target B, find the range and DOF, let it calculate the dope. And last, toggle to target C and find the range and DOF and let the kestrel calculate the DOP.

Hope this makes sense, any help would be appreciated.

Ryan

I have been working on truing up the velocity data on my new Kestrel 5700 Elite with LINK. At 621 yards MV CAL with corrected drop calculated a velocity of 3044 fps (vs. 2947 with my Magnetospeed). This seems like a lot of difference to me. I also shot ammo at 68 degrees, 100 degrees, and 110 degrees at the same sitting. Does the Kestrel correct the MV CAL velocity to the temperature factor, or how does it handle that data?
