    Results with 300gr 338 Accubond

I have been travelling for 3 weeks and may have missed some posts, but has anyone been working with the new 300gr 338 accubond in a Lapua Mag? Mine loves both 300ge SMK's and 300gr Scenars (both around 1/2 MOA with H100) and I am thinking about going to the Accubond for hunting elk this fall...

    110 FCP-HS 338LM in need of advice

Re: 110 FCP-HS 338LM in need of advice I tinkered with 250 SMK's and 300 Scenars using Retumbo, RL 22 and H1000. My brass is Lapua and I always use Fed 215's. I played with the distance off the lands and it performed best touching the lands. The H1000 grouped well between 88 and 89.5gr. My...

    Removing live primer from case

Re: Removing live primer from case I get that, but conversely some questions are just not worth asking. Will a primer detonate if I try to unseat it? That's worth knowing how to do safely because I may have to do it. Not a waste of time. Can I re-use it and save 3 cents on a round by doing...

    Boattail....not always the best!

Re: Boattail....not always the best! True enough. If your gun shoots both equally accurately the BT will pay dividends at long range. If it wasn't accurate in the first place why would you care how fast it was still travelling or how little it dropped when you missed what you were shooting at?

    Removing live primer from case

Re: Removing live primer from case I am amazed that there has been so much discussion about a few primers worth 3 cents apiece. Jesus, I had no idea that times were so hard that someone would screw around with $2.00 woth of primeers risking detonation, misfires and bullet pulling exercise...

    Heavy 50 Cal Bullets

Does anyone have a source of 50 cal bullets, either jacketed or solids, in weights heavier than 750gr? I am looking for something north of 900gr if such a thing exists. Thanks,

    Subsonic 50 cal load

Re: Subsonic 50 cal load On further consideration the limiting nfactor may be twist rate. In order to stabilize this bullet it seems a fairly fast twist rate would be required and I am not sure a castable bullet will not strip the rifling. Any opinions there?

    Subsonic 50 cal load

Re: Subsonic 50 cal load Thanks Bohem. I did not consider a cast bullet but given the low velocities intended it actually makes a lot of sense. It would not be that tough to get a mold made if none were available commercially. I can think of some practical uses for a suppressed rifle that...

Boattail bullets vs Flat Base bullets

Re: Boattail bullets vs Flat Base bullets I have mixed feelings on that. On one hand apparently the jacket separated from the core, which I admit is bad. On the other the bullet was so good you can kill big game with inadvertant ass shots using it, which seems pretty good. I don't know...

    Reload first?

Re: Reload first? I am with Greg on this. I do break barrels in myself as I see advice from people more experienced than me recommend it. That's OK by me since I feel that until the brass is fireformd to your chamber you really can't start to get optimum results. When you look at the...

Boattail bullets vs Flat Base bullets

Re: Boattail bullets vs Flat Base bullets I have to agree with Ledzep that the moment of bullet exit would seem to be the most likely factor in accuracy, BT to FB. I guess (with nothing better to do while drinking my coffee this AM) I would add a couple things. A lot of the comments on this...

Is there a much better ELR round than the 338LM?

Is there a much better ELR round than the 338LM?

Re: Is there a much better ELR round than the 338LM? Augustus, What kind of projectiles and load are you running in your 338/408? I have both a 375 CT Improved built on a 408 CT case with a Lawton action as well as a 338LM. Both great guns and both shooters, but frankly I went with too...

Re: Subsonic 50 cal load I am bumping this to the front in case anyone has info on the 960 gr 50 cal projo. Thanks,

    Subsonic 50 cal load

Re: Subsonic 50 cal load One last note, I see reference to a 960 grain bullet and would like to base the round and twist rate on the bullet to net out max energy. I have not located a source of the 960 gr bullets I have seen referenced so any input there would also be appreciated.

    Subsonic 50 cal load

Re: Subsonic 50 cal load Thanks to all for the input. I have a Lawton action in a McRees chassis with a Nightforce scope that I have played with that is currently chambered in 375 CT Improved of my own case design (using necked down/fire formed 408 CT brass). My 338 LM more or less fills my...

    Subsonic 50 cal load

Re: Subsonic 50 cal load I did not explain very well so here goes. I am thinking about taking a 408 Chey Tac case, neck it up to 50 cal for a 750gr bullet and shortening the case down to the appropriate size to be a 95% capacity charge of sufficient powder to keep the bullet subsonic. I am...

    Subsonic 50 cal load

Re: Subsonic 50 cal load You are assuming a partially filled case regarding detonation. That would obviously be a dangerous load. I am talking about a shortened 408 CT case with a 95%+ case capacity. Just trying to get a handle on just what that charge might be as a starting point. Thanks,

    Subsonic 50 cal load

Can anyone recommend a program that can give a starting load of H1000, Retumbo or 50BMG powders that will yield approx 1050fps loads out of a 750gr 50 cal projectile in a 26" barrel? I am considering a new project and wanted to get some idea of required case capacity and don't know where to...

First shooting with the Savage 110 FCP in 338 LM

Re: First shooting with the Savage 110 FCP in 338 LM My experience with Retumbo is that it is sooty. Seems to be very consistent and not temp sensitive and I get slightly higher velocities in my 338 LM with 300gr Scenars out of it as compared to H100, but it is dirty.
