After reading this I am having second thoughts about having a 3 position added. Other than the fact that it's a gunsmithing nightmare; is it not the better safety between the two? I've seen this used on some rather magnificant looking rifles such as the PGW Timberwolf etc.

What are some professional opinion's on the 3 position safety?

Thanks,

Re: 3 Position safety shroud

Not knowing whose three position safety you are applying to your rifle it is hard to say for sure. For the Winchester style that blocks the striker, it is a real benefit in my opinion. The safety allow the operator the choice of just blocking the striker for "safe" and clearing the chamber on "safe". In the rearmost position, the striker is still blocked, but now the bolt is locked closed for field movement. Obviously, the third position is on "fire". Winchesters and FNH SPRs and TSRs operate this way. Mausers, for the most part are two position striker mounted which block the striker.

In the Winchester/FN style, there is a bolt sleeve lock which also is mounted to the striker housing/bolt sleeve. With the bolt removed and in the middle "safe" position, the operator can disassemble the bolt without the use of any tools by simply pressing in on the bolt sleeve lock and screwing the striker out of the bolt body.

On these safeties, the striker is blocked, not the sear. This completely disengages the trigger mechanism from the bolt. Remingtons and similar block the sear while the striker is still engaged to the sear.

There may be some fitting required for an aftermarket thre-position striker mounted safety. If done properly, I think it would be worth it. Hope this helps.

Re: 3 Position safety shroud

The rifle being built is a .338 Norma Magnum using a Surgeon 581 XL repeater action.

Here's a picture of a .308 I saw here on the Hide, and there's a .338 PGWT built Timberwolf built the same way w/ the 3 position.

Thanks again,
