300 NORMA MAG ?

This is a 4 shot group at 1120 with the 338 ackley improved and fire forming loads, 95 grs of rl33 and 300gr Bergers

o74wt0.jpg

Yea the 300 Norma shot a lot better than the 338 did past 1600 which was a little bit of a surpise, we had 6 straight hits at 1920 on a man size target, 89grs of rl33 and 230hybrids at 3050

I'm really looking into a 300 Norma. I think its the round for me. Anyone really wish they would have went another route other than this one. Its looks almost too good to be true.

Nope I have a 338 lapua ai and two 300 Norma's and I enjoy shooting the Norma way more, love my lapua but I can't shoot it all day, after about 30 rounds I get bad headaches, but the Norma I can shoot all day

The 230 and RL33 in your 300 norma may be hard to beat with the results you have been getting.

I also have a 338 lapua Ackley and I am in the process of building a 300 Norma. As David said earlier the 338 beats the shit out of your shoulder with recoil and face with the percussion off the muzzle break but the Norma is a gentle beast in comparison. Also when we shot them side by side I actually think the Norma out performed the 338 granted we were shooting fire forming loads in it.

Scotty, do you happen to know the load data on that 300 Norma, and I agree, the 300 Norma is surprising and impressive. Thanks

The load we were shooting in David's 300 Norma (which hammers btw I posted a pic of a 5 shot group a few pages back at 400 yards basically one splatter mark) was 89gr of reloader 33 with the 230gr berger hybrids out of a 30in tube at around 3150fps. He can chime in and correct me if I'm wrong on fps.

Any idea what kind of case fill he's getting? I have a 40° Improved and run H570. Only get ~85% case fill and would like to switch to a bulkier powder.

Hmm no I don't have any idea on case fill. I don't have my 300nm yet do I'm not loading for it. I'm sure he will chime in and can answer your question

I'm not sure on the case fill on my 300norma or my 300 Norma ai but I will find out tomorrow for you if I had to guess around 90% on the Norma, during load development I went all the way up to 93 gr of rl33 and no pressure signs but I started to get a different poi so I went back down to 89 which was in the middle running 3050, with 215 hybrids I'm running 92grs of RL 33 at 3157

What is your coal and barrel length? I am having one built and I'm planning on shooting the 230's and 215 Bergers and am trying to get a feel for the cartridge based on actual results rather than just quickload

Holy crap I love this round. Those are crazy numbers.

If your ever in Houston give me a should and we can go shoot out to as far as you want, well at least to 3650 anyways, the Norma is badass and probably one of the most accurate guns I've ever shot and the most consistent gun I own, you definitely won't regret building one

85-2974 not as bad?
86-3067 hard bolt lift
H1000

88-2899-great extract

RL33 is clearly the winner through the crony!

loaded 25 or so for the range!

Seems heavy bolt lift at 83gr H1000 seems weird, that's not that much not even yellow zone on QL, let alone anything near 60kpsi or the case max.

Hi all any more updates on anyone loading and shooting 300 Norma Mag since these replies?

Cheers

300 Norma

I have been trying some 230 OTMs and H50BMG, Starting load is at 86 grains, FED 215s, .002 neck tension, COAL 3.530, 2800fps with a 25.5" barrel, 3.6 fps max spread velocity for three shots. Here's a couple photos, one is a 3 shot group at 340 yards, and the other was at 1100, 7.5 mill of elevation, nothing special, gives me a starting point.

Hmmm jamming bullets maybe?

i wish they were? bullets were not jammed. they are setting on(at) a pushed out donought by the sizing button? I have a body die to trim cases and .311-.3115 neck reamer coming today from Wilson. FL sized cases loaded rounds were very easy to insert. Iwas suprised how tough the bolt lift was on Retumbo that i only fired one middle of the road H1000 and it was tough to lift? RL33 was awesome!

6Dasher
hate to ask but can you send QL data for H1000-Retumbo-RL33 PM? i'm outdated maybe i can sort out the "why"?

update post:
got my inside neck reamer and i do believe i found my pressure problem! On a fired case(several firings) i could not push a bullet through the donught, i got that sucker out now with the .3115 reamer, it takes a bit of hand work but it was certainly bullet release. I will FL size and trim and found my old QL CD (3.0 with 3.1 update) where they at now?,and a new laptop so i will see if i can get it working?
data still appreciated...

just tyying to provide new data on a awesome case! maybe H powders will work a bit better next time around?
I got the first run of Forester dies (still new),and Forster corrected that problem.when i sent them 3 fired cases.., i guess i jumped on this case right as 300 stamped brass showed up and fixing old issues now? Had to order reamer for smith. etc...

I found a bit of a unicorn (a left-hand long action AX chassis) so I figured now was my chance to build a 300NM and bought it. I'll be driving down to GAP this week to drop it off so they can work their magic. To those who shoot a 300NM, school me on what I need to know. I'm planning to shoot the 215's over RL-33 or H1000 - I've got lots of both. Is Forster the only company that makes dies?

I have had the best results with a Redding 300 Norma neck die, body die, and bullet seater die, using a neck neck bushing that puts .002 neck tension.

Took the chassis down to GAP yesterday and got the build moving along. I'm hoping to get 3100fps from the 215 berger with this setup.

Build specs:

AX chassis - multicam dip
Templar V2
28" Bartlein med. contour palma 1-10 twist
Mini FTE brake
Timney trigger

Let the wait begin!

There are lots of scattered handloading info for the 300NM but I haven't found a dedicated thread so I started one in the reloading thread. Wanted to post this here as well. Loads are organized by bullet weight. Here's what I've found so far:

im thining i should stick with 88gr ,as above post was the lowest ES.

does anybody have QL that can run this and see where i am at in safe or overloaded? as was the primer pocked just a bit loose for powder to get by?
just want to be safe

I ran 88 and 89grs with 230's through my 30-338 Norma Imp today (35* shoulder based on 338 Norma shoulder dimensions) , which was too low of charges, but the 89gr load shot a 3 shot group that was .120". The velocity was only 3000fps. I'll load 90-92 or 93 and see what I get next. 86grs of VV N-570 gave me 3075fps with a 5 shot group in the .4's. I need to fireform more brass so I can keep playing until the long wait for my dies is over. The nice thing about my chamber is I can knock the primers out, stuff new ones in, load it with powder, and seat a bullet. It has enough neck tension without sizing. Once I've shot them a few times then I have to put them aside to wait on my dies since they need FL sized.

300 norma mag here. Defiance action, 28" krieger 10 twist, Jewell trigger, grey bull precision stock, defiance bottom, and muscle break to tone the girl down. Rifle shoots better than I can handle, from 5 shot 100 yard (.3-.4) out to 2100 (67 moa). Problem I'm running into is loose primer pockets on only 3rd load. Wondering if I have a chamber problem or if anyone else is experiencing the same? Load is on mild side, 84.5 retumbo, 230 Berger, .005-.008 jam, fed 215's.

david.how far off land are these 3.60? Im building one using nathan(idahoctd) reamer.

I know this has been asked before in this thread, and answered, but not to my satisfaction :)

What dies are you guys using. The only die maker that I can find that actually lists 300 Norma dies on their website is Forster - and that is only a seater and Full - no neck die. And there is no Forster dealer here in Iceland - not a deal breaker - but make things more diffucult. Very good Norma dealer - so cases are no problem.

Does anyona have a 3 piece bushing die set for 300 Norma?

Redding will make up a 3 die set for you, body, neck sizer, and seater, its a bit expensive, they are a custom order. For me it has been worth it. Shot quarter inch, not quarter MOA groups today with the rifle at 350 yards with 230 gr. Berger otm's and h50bmg, .002 neck tension.

Was doing a half ass OCW test on my 300 Norma AI couple weeks ago wasn't able to chrono it due to the fact I broke my magneto strap but here are the groups I got with the different powder loads started with 94grs went up in 1/2 gr increments to 96.5 grs, test was done at 100 yards, I normally due this test at 300 but the range in Corpus Christi only goes to 100

I'm not sure it's of much help but I started using cci250 primers and switched to winchester wlrm due to availability. Winchester's were so small i could seat them with my thumb. Found some more cci250s and problem went away.

Not sure on the velocity but I'm pretty sure I'm not near 3200 I believe I'm around 3130 with 95 grs I'm at 3080

I believe I've heard that before. Read somewhere win, fed, rem, cci, in that order. But I have not tried it, thanks I will give it a shot. I had another rifle doing the same, it turned out the chamber was on the big side.
