308 AR10 Build Info/Picture Thread

This is my first attempt at building a PRS gas gun. I'm going to be testing it out in a few weeks at the Racine County Line Sniper Challenge. It's a 308 or 223 only match that will go out to 700 yards. I'm going to run my 41.8gr IMR 4064 / 175gr SMK load. It gets me 2652 fps with a SD of 10. This rifle is a pig at about 18lbs and I've never taken it past 300 yards, hope it does well.

New 6.5 Creedmoor big block gasser! Built around a 20" Proof CFW barrel with +2 CAMGAS system. The Battle Arms 7.62 receiver set with matching handguard create a solid home for this lightweight, precision barrel. Since it's a 6.5 CM, I'm using a FMOS JP bolt carrier group with high pressure bolt, SLR adjustable gas block, H3 buffer, and Heavy Buffers recoil spring. All the small parts are V Seven titanium, as is the Fusion brake. Larue MBT breaks at 3.5 LB.

Weight? 7 LB 15.5 OZ. dry.

What length handguard? I like the fact you can take adjustable gas block off without removing handguard

I figured I would throw in my newest big block build. I built it to basically serve as a 308 battle rifle/DMR. I am building a 16" chrome moly barreled upper for chewing through milsurp ammo. This upper I just completed for it, is the DMR upper. Since I built it with some parts sourced from here on the hide, I figured it only right I throw a couple cell phone pics up of it.

Here goes the build list, nothing fancy, but definitely functional. The weather is supposed to break this weekend so maybe I can add some groups this weekend.

  • Stag 10 Upper/Lower Set
  • Seekins SP10 18" Barrel and Brake
  • Troy 15" Carbon Fiber Mlok Rail
  • Seekins Adjustable Gas Block
  • Intermediate Gas System
  • Toolcraft Bolt Carrier
  • JP Enhanced Bolt
  • KAC Charging Handle
  • KAK Heavy Carbine Buffer/Spring
  • CMMG 2 Stage Trigger
  • Aero M5 LPK, A2 Grip
  • HK Stock (Placeholder for SOPMOD)
7039473

7039474

Also its wearing a Burris AR332, also a placeholder for a decent mil 2-10x scope. The 16" upper will wear the Burris until I can afford an ACOG...

How does it shoot?? Curious because I have the same barrel on an Aero M5 receiver set.

It shoots pretty well. I will be honest though, I hav me only shot it a handful of times and with a grain that was to light for the 1/10 twist so my groups were a little wider than they should have been BUT it was consistent.

I cant say enough good things about the Aero M5, quality made, simple, accurate and reliable. I have a complete factory built rifle in .308. The rifle wears their 18" CMV barrel with rifle length gas system, QPQ finish and their new Atlas R-One handguard. This configuration is lightweight enough and handy. The only change I made to the setup was the trigger, the mil-spec trigger was swapped for a 3.5lb Rise Armament unit.

As far as optics, I tossed a spare Nightforce NXS 5.5-22x56 that I've had laying around until I settle on what scope I want the rifle to have (likely another Eotech VUDU).

Whats really impressive about this stick is accuracy! I shot some mild handloads that I made for another gas gun that I own and the groups were VERY agreeable.

The load was a 155 Horndy BTHP- 42.0gr AR-Comp- Win Brass- CCI LRP- COAL 2.780. Average MV was 2702 FPS

The groups were shot at 100 yards in the prone position, off a bipod and rear bag, one 5 shot group was .6moa, all were less than 1moa when I did my part. The group I posted is 10 shots, the rifle is consistent and didn't change with the the longer shot string.

Of course its the Rifle in the middle, Cheers!

Looks awesome shortbus, I've heard tons of good reviews on the Aero M5. I tried to get mine dialed in today. Got close then had to bolt due to sudden sideways rain... its zeroed but still gotta shoot it a bit more to make 100% sure it good:

Just a PSA 16” 308 I tore apart and rebuilt, doing what I built it to do. Sprinco spring and buffer, 16” stainless 1:10, adj rifle length gas block, RRA Varmint 2 stage, BRT Covert comp, Guntec handguard, ACS-L stock, Ergo deluxe grip, Krylon, USO LR-17 tossing Hornady 150 Interlocks sub MOA at 2625.

How do you like the Luth MBA? I'm looking to upgrade my magpul fixed MOE

The magpul fixed feels solid (no play, shake, ruttle). The pad contour feels realy nice and it's easy to install. I like it for the price, I was looking for the stocks that has the cheek rest but it will blow my budget for the build.

Aero Precision M5E1 Receiver set w/ matching 15" handguard

Magpul PRS Gen 3 Stock
Superlative Arms .936 adjustable gas block
Larue MBT-2S Trigger
Seekins Rings
Vortex PST Gen II 3-15x
Harris 6-9 BRM-S

Curious what accuracy people are getting out of their gas guns. I've struggled to squeeze sub-moa accuracy out of this rifle. With my bolt action precision rifle I can consistently shoot 1/2 inch groups at 200 yards, but it seems that my gas guns hover right around MOA and sometimes better.

I have found 2 loads that consistently hover around MOA accuracy or slightly better being 43gr of Reloader 15 with 175 SMK and 41.8gr of IMR 4064 with 175 SMK.

(Please disregard my load data, I do not use either of those 2 loads for a reason)

A little late but I have a Criterion 24" bull but in 6.5 Creedmoor and it's a 1/2 MOA shooter with Hornady box ammo. It isn't in an Aero receiver, it has an SR Gold trigger which is a minor upgrade, oversized takedown pins with hand reamed holes for a zero play fit, JP BCG and a JP SCS.

Mine has a plain muzzle, no brake and my scope obviously works.

I would go over everything but start with removing the muzzle brake and swapping on a known good scope. Maybe try some FGMM as a control?

Also avoid caffeine on shooting days, I can see it in my groups even though I don't feel jittery at all.

Since that post, I think I've worked out a load for this rifle and improved my technique for gas guns. I took my Aero M5 308 build to a local PRS match that went out to 600 yards and was spot on all the way out to max distance. They had 8-inch and 10-inch square plates set up at 600 yards, and I went 10/10 on the 8-inch plate after the match was over so I'm pretty happy with the rifle's performance. Next time I'll see if I can set up some paper and get a group in.

+1 on the no caffeine before hitting the range, I learned that the hard way.

Here is a good link with some information on large frame AR carbine buffers:

The section on "Buffer comparison (P308 carbine stock)" has pictures and descriptions of the two different types of large frame AR carbine buffer setups.

I like using their 7 position buffer tube setup which is essentially identical to the "AR10" carbine setup. Their older 6 position buffer tube with shorty buffer is essentially the same as the DPMS style carbine setup.

POF occasionally has sales with 15% off which is the cheapest "AR10" length buffer tube I've found beside PSA (which has no anti-tilt feature and the build quality doesn't compare). POF offers it in a package with spring and buffer but if you price them separately, the package has no discount. I usually buy the tube and spring from POF and figure out the buffer later because it's a standard AR part and I have a few flavors I swap out to figure out what works best. That way I don't buy a bunch of unused buffers.

Hi there! New to the forum so I thought I'd start off here with my .308 build, pictured below.

JP 18" barrel, Griffin Armament brake for use with Paladin, SLR Rail on the Aero M5 receiver set, JP Silent Capture Spring, Geissele SD-E trigger. Just got new furniture today so will be swapping over to a Magpul STR and MOE+ grip. I know I prefer the STR for bench shooting but we'll see if I like the MOE+ better than the fat Ergo.

P_20190418_145756.jpg

Got the UBR installed. Cool thing about going with the UBR is it allowed me to run a standard AR15 buffer which opens up a lot of easier to find and tune buffers vs. the short 308 carbine buffer.

Plus its an amazing stock, locks up tighter than any other collapsible I've tried. Plus the longer tube makes for a little lighter recoil impulse. Running a T2 in it now. Can't recommend this stock enough.

I recently rebarreled/re-railed my large frame.

Was a fan of 260rem. And Dracos had a fire sale. So i tried it.
Will list JP heavy 308/SLR9/Noveske 15 inch rail when i return to the states

Same as before.
But new Dracos 22 inch 260 rem
Precision Armament M11 brake
Falkor Breacher rail

I ended up with 3 tungsten weights on the silent buffer. Ejection seems decent without an adjustable gas system. Maybe 4 oclock ejection. clean brass.

Only break in and quick zero so far. Will load test and zero when i get back. But 130 eld looks promising
(The 140gr didnt fit in mag)

Nice job. I know the feeling after buttoning it all up. i would love to know how that brake holds up on a gas gun. Please update.

I had the brake on for 8 months (then went to a Dead Air Suppressor) and it held up great. It still looks like new. When you first put them on, you need to reach up and tighten it several times before it completely settles down and stays tight. Without a doubt, awesome brakes.
