Range Report 6GT Project/Range Report

@NorCal Vu your 33.5gr varget shoots well in my barrel as well, 700 yards 6 rounds 2.5" vertical.

Working up at 200 yards, one inch dots, barrel is still settling in per my velocity swings just prior to these so I wouldn't read to much into ES. Also, lower right says 40, it should read 37 ;)

Damn GT Redding dies are expensive as shit!?

looking for a reamer and then I will be chambering up a GT on an Impact.

have quite a bit of H4350 so will be using that with 108 ELD’s most likely. Hopefully I’ll get in the second batch of Alpha brass AND it runs well.

I will be coming from a 6.5 creed so that will be interesting to see the recoil difference.

youll be way happier with a 6mm.

Does anyone know if the GT should use the .375 Hornady headspace gauge?

that’s my best guessanyway.

Also what starting load should I start with H4350 and 108 eld’s?

Have been using the RCBS match master per Ken's recommendation.
Liking them so far.
Have many sets of Redding.
I think they are as good.

I apologize if I missed this. Have a few questions for measurements if forming brass from lapua.

About how far back you bump shoulders.....what is the rough measurement you need to be below from base to shoulder on a bump/headspace gauge?

Then, what OAL do you cut with saw and then trim down to?

What size do you turn necks to?

Or if all these steps with measurements are somewhere, please let me know.

Thanks!

With Hornady available now, and the 2nd batch of Alpha shipping out, why would you convert Lapua brass???

@reubenski my test target was a mess today, likely me but there appears to be a node in the 37.5-37.7 area, 37.6 had me doing 2948. 38 grains gave me 2977.

I also narrowed down my lower velocity node to 36.4 or 36.5. I shot 3 groups of ten 36.3, 36.4 & 36.5 and I'm pretty sure my barrel sped up at 36.4 as my ES was huge and it showed on the 700 yard plate. 36.5 settled back down with 5.75" of vertical for ten shots, see below. Velocity on that group (unfired hornady brass)
2859 sd5/18es

Compression can be heard when loading anything above the mid 36 grain area with RL-16 and that's with a 7" drop tube. And while more prominent at 38 grains it still was seating to the same depth for all loaded rounds.

I'll be verifying both 36.4-36.6 & 37.5-37.7 at distance in the next few days.

Then I'll move on to test Stable6.5...

Data points with StaBall6.5 and Temperature stability in the 6mm GT case.

The load:
New Hornady cases, CCI 450 primers, 40.50 grains of powder, 115 Dtac's seated .030-.032" off the lands.

Procedure:
Ammo was exposed to temperature for 4.5 hours, then rapidly discharged within one minute of removal from each temperature source.

Because I was starting with a clean cold bore I discharged 5 rounds at 4 degrees, 3 rounds at 67 degrees and 3 rounds at 107 degrees. While some may call the number of rounds used into question, it still gives a baseline and I plan to follow up once I find the load I plan to use with this powder.

Results collected by magnetospeed:
4*
2937, 2951, 2923, 2951, 2939= 2940 sd11/28es
67*
2977, 2976, 2983= 2978 3/7
107*
2999, 2992, 2986= 2992 6/12

4 to 67 equal .6fps per degree.
67 to 107 equal .35fps per degree.

Confirmed my low velocity node today with RL16 and 115 Dtac's as 36.6 grains for 2871 sd 4/13 es. Looking at past targets and notes would place my high node at 37.7 with a velocity between 2948 (37.6) & 2962 (37.8)

Have 300 rounds down the barrel now. Shot one local match with the gun. Liking the round so far. I have tried varget, H4350 and staball. One time out with staball gave up. Accuracy wasn't there and didn't want to mess with it too much. Shooting the Regional finale tomorrow. I have tried it get the Barnes 112 to shot but can't get them to group.

My load is 37 H4350 Berger 105 cci br2 hornady brass. 3015 fps. 200 yard groups.

I'm still waiting on a barrel but I have everything else. I loaded a DTAC and a 105 Hybrid to George's published COALs. It looks a little better for the Hybrid than I thought it would. I've been shooting a Dasher for three years and a 6 Creed for about 18 months. This cartridge looks like the perfect size in comparison, especially for general purpose barricade matches. I hope performance matches looks.

Are those 2 different brass manufacturers as well?

Very interesting read. I've got a defiance action that I have been looking at getting barreled into this caliber.

What’s a good starting load for H4350 and 108 eld’s?

also have any if you had the 108 ELD’s not shoot well down range?

i have...ive never had any luck with hornady bullets...the 140ELDMs shot ok in my 6.5x47 but not well enough to continue using.

i have been shooting 140 eld for 6.5 cm with great results. Never noticed anything wonky out of all the matches I have shot. Reading about the 108’s though people are reporting that they don’t shoot.

haa me worried on what Bullets to buy. I don’t enjoy spending money on Berger.

Where are these posts about 108s not shooting? Consensus I've seen has been "they go where they're pointed".

i know a couple guys shooting the 140s and like them they just never shot up to my expectations...the 108ELDs i shot 30 of them and that was enough.
the only bullets ive shot the will shoot better than bergers are the 105g infinitys but at $253 bucks a box ill stick to the bergers.
you want easy to load and stupid consistent get yourself a 100 108g bergers and load them .025 off and run a charge test and ill bet around 2950 and 3050 youll buy more...smallest groups ive ever shot at distance were 108g bergers.

I used 37-38.4 grains of H4350 with 115's and didn't have any pressure signs. I'd feel safe using that with 108s as well. 47.6-48 looked most promising.

Uhh you don’t mean 47 grains do you? I don’t think that would fit.

I’m gonna go ahead and assume you meant 37.6-38 lol

Figure I'd pass on some info. Just talked to Steve at X-Caliber since they're running 30% sitewide today.

If you call and get your order in, you can lock in BF/CM prices and then call them back with your order number and have them tag it for 6GT chambering.

They are still waiting on reamers and will have to confirm specs and make test barrels before production. Figure 10-16 weeks based on what I gathered.

Snagged a 26" 1:7.7 m40 profile to jump into the 6mm works.

Has anybody bothered to work up some RL16 loads with either the 105s or 112/115s? I know StaBall has everybody hot and bothered since we can meter it but I'm real fond the temp-resistance in RL16 for shooting throughout the year here in OK

The new batch of 112's I can't get to shoot. Shot the 112 all last year and loved them. New batch are no good. Back to Berger's. Wanting on the 109's
How new a batch are you talking? I just got 1000 rounds in from MidwayUSA last week. Loaded up some rounds with 33.2-34.0gr Varget and 38.2-39.0gr of Staball 6.5. Hoping it's an easy load development and I didn't waste my time/money.

Barnes sold out of the 112 last year. Production started again in August. I got 15,000 in last month for friends and me. Had them shooting ok at 100 yards. Tried about 200 rounds with. Varget, h4350, and staball 6.5. H4350 was the best. Shot a local match and had funny groups going at distance. Came home an shot these groups at 200 yards with the match loads. That's a 1 inch dot.
