The Bodies on Everest thread got me thinking. A few years back I (we) were in the early stages of planning our honeymoon. This was the second/third marriage for us so we weren't looking for traditional. We considered a trip to Nepal, NOT to climb Everest but just to be close enough to say we were there--besides I wanted to say I had been to Katmandu. That was the year they had a bad earthquake so we looked for other places.

We considered climbing Mt Kilimanjaro. Its not a "climb", more like a hard hike. yes you need to be in shape but climbing skills are not needed. Think of it this way, if you make it to the top, you can say you climbed the highest mountain in Afrika, on of the Seven Summits (highest mountain on each continent).

I was pushing for a stay on the Falklands, maybe something like a Bed and Breakfast. I wanted to visit Goose Green; but we decided it wasn't the best idea I had ever had.... Ultimately my bride decided we should do a Lion Hunt in South Afrika. Hahaha, it turned into a Lion Hunt and diamond shopping. We jumped all around southern Afrika (Johannesburg, Kimberly, Capetown, and Victoria Falls in Rhodesia errr Zimbabwe).

Africa is cheap.... once you get past airfare....
EXACTLY. I/we seriously considered buying a condo in Capetown for vacations until we retired, then snowbirding. When we were there, the rate of exchange was something like 14 cents to the dollar.

Air Fare from Dullas to Jo'burg was about $1800 on South African Airlines. SAA is great.

I’ve vastly preffered my travels to eastern europe.

My next trip is Tbilisi georgia.
Not too many Americans ever visit there, exchange rate is good, and its not filled with non europeans

Agreed 100%. I just watched the Grand Tour and they drove through there. Looks absolutely amazing.

Why would anyone go to Africa? There are some nice areas, but overall the continent is a shithole. Travel tip (take it from someone who travels more than almost anyone here): if you have to get vaccinated to go somewhere it’s probably a clue you shouldn’t go.

I would do an extended stay there to hunt the Big-Five. That is something worth considering for every serious shooter and hunter.

But yeah, the continent is home to some of the most virulent pathogens known to man and what makes it even more hazardous is that a lot of primates and bats carry them without getting ill, so it is literally a throw of the dice to when the next epidemic strikes due to an unfortunate soul crossing paths with one of the vectors.

I wouldn't be too sure about that, there were quite a few of us in uniform passing through there about 16 yrs ago (literally to the day)....

Have you ever been to South Afrika? I ask because there are NO vaccinations needed or even suggested for RSA or Rhodesia (ooops Zimbabwe). I went there for hunting; but its also where my family was born. Every time I see a box for black or African American, I look for the box for White African..... Maak Weer Suid-Afrika Wit

Yeah been to Cape Town and port Elizabeth and Johannesburg There are always exceptions.

Mine is motorcycling the Ho Chi Minh Trail and the coast of RVN. Some of the blogs by folks who have done it are amazing.

Still in the cards for someday... after Trans-Lab, Lincoln Highway, Alaska Highway, Australia, NZ. RVN would make an amazing finale before bringing the Dakar home.

Cheers, Sirhr
Do it man! You only live once. Take aj with you and find some old ordinance.

Hahaha My first trip was to Jo'Burg and Port Elizabeth in 2012. Cape Town, Kimberly and Zim in '16. If I was only hunting, Id flip back and forth between Kimberly and the Eastern Cape; but I fell in love with Cape Town. Its big city enough to have the excitement of a urban area and maybe 30 minutes to the mountains. If you buy the right house you can see the ocean out one window and the mountains out of another. The city was amazingly clean and felt safe to walk about. The people were great.
