Not a psychiatrist or mental health professional... but for what it's worth - the ones I've talked to in personal life (no, not as a patient), left right and other leaning, including one who works at the VA, have all expressed this before.
Makes me wonder though - is there even anything that can be done about this at a practical level with a population of 300M+? If anything, isn't it statistically inevitable that someone is going to slip through the cracks? Not here necessarily as this whole Maine shooter story just seems off to me... just thinking out loud.

The fact that this mentally fucked up POS was able to kill 18 people in an urban area means that NOT ENOUGH people are armed. If there had been an ARFCOM/Hide/GOA meetup and convention next door to the bowling alley at the time he showed up, his ass will not make it past 6 shots before everybody comes around the corner and gang stomps him. His body will have around 10-15 GSWs and an equal number of stab wounds. In the melee an overexcited Arfcommer might also accidentally shoot a Hide member in the arm and then in turn, get beat up by 5-6 Hide members. In the end everybody would be gathering at the tavern for a drink, including the Hide member with his arm in a sling and the roughed up Arfcommer, but the crisis would be settled then and there.
By the way, how convenient it is for the perp to have been found dead from a self inflicted GSW when he was loaded for war and obviously going after more soft targets? To your point...the largest mass killings are done in Chinese schools by a knife wielding psycho, not a gun. It's fairly routine there.
