Nothing like a little interservice rivalry.

Re: Nothing like a little interservice rivalry.

"They are in front of us, behind us, and we are flanked on both sides by an enemy that outnumbers us 29:1. They can't get away from us now!"
- Lewis B. "Chesty" Puller, USMC
When the Marines were cut off behind enemy lines and the Army had written the 1st Marine Division off as being lost because they were surrounded by 22 enemy divisions. The Marines made it out inflicting the highest casualty ratio on an enemy in history and destroying 7 entire enemy divisions in the process. An enemy division is 16500+ men while a Marine division is 12500 men.

I always see retired marines, still trying to be extra-oorah, wearing leather, riding harleys, smoking like crazy, and talking about their glory days every 30 seconds.

But I see the retired navy/army/air force guys living out their days happy, usually with a lake house, married, grandchildren, and they usually have some hobby (like woodworking, ect)

It's just one of the stark differences I notice. </div></div>

Ha! Combat Camera...

Re: Nothing like a little interservice rivalry.

If I was young and I am not and I wanted to be the best I would join the Marines! If I just wanted to get by and get tru I would joint the Army I think both branchs are good but deal with it in other ways. Still the old way of the Marines is pretty cool and I would think you get a hard hard man when done. Great stuff what we are about.

Re: Nothing like a little interservice rivalry.

The problem, or reality (depending on how you look at it) is that "Soldier" refers to all of us, whether we be desk clerks, intel analysts, laundry and bath specilists, or special ops. We are all soldiers, and when we have certain branches that.. well, you wouldn't want with you on a patrol, we all feel the backlash. Our "elite" titles are individually earned, and you won't catch SF, the 75th, or airborne infantry units falling into the weak ass pussy crowd.

As a soldier I respect the hell out of the Marines. They seem to do an excellent job of trimming the fat from their ranks and at least keeping up the impression of being a bunch of hardasses. We could learn a few things from their service as far as not tolerating the horseshit.

The problems in the military simply mirror modern society, where our culture is eroding from the politically correct bullshit that's being forced down our throats. Since the military (all branches) follow the orders of the civillian elected government, our nation's military is being fundamentally weakened regardless of whether we in the military want it to happen or not...

I agree with you 1000% on that. Lucky for me I got some badass CIB wearing 11B's, and kids DID get beat.

The craziest one just wore his jump wings...with one gold star in the center...and NOTHING else.

They really have coed DS's and co-ed platoons? WTF? When did they start that bullshit? Holy shit!

So, I joined the Army to "get by"?

Fuck you, civvie.

Learn to spell too.

Re: Nothing like a little interservice rivalry.

There are basically two different "boats" in the Army that everyone can be classified as being located in: 1) The POGs in their cruise ships and 2) The hell-raising ass-kickers in their swift boats.

Don't group all of the U.S. Army in the same boat; some of us are actually hardcore fighters.

I can see where he could get the "pale" in his name;

Puking his guts out on the track around the 250 ft towers at the Benning School for Boys.

Getting "by" while celebrating Christmas at Bastogne.
