Rifle Scopes scout rifle scope problems

hey guys I have a mauser scout rifle with a tasco 2x long eye relief scope. This is my favorite deer rifle and I let a friend barrow it and the crosshairs would not focus and eventually dissapeared when I got it back.
I am wondering what happened, did the scope lose its nitrogen?
Has anyone had dealings with sending a scope off for repairs or is this a waste. I hate to spend $250 bucks to replace a scope I got already on a $150 rifle

Re: scout rifle scope problems

This has always been the problem with the Scout Rifle concept, it didn't take off enough for anyone to market a really high quality heavy duty scope. Since the 2x tasco is actually a pistol scope, you may have better luck looking for a better quality but used pistol scope.

Re: scout rifle scope problems

The fact it is a Trashco is the problem. They are not renowned for their ability to hold up very well under recoil.

As for the lack of heavy-duty scout scopes...nonsense. There are several offerings out there that will fill the role exceedingly well, but as you feared, they'll cost you at least $250. Try these:

Burris 2.75x Scout:

Leupold 2.5x Scout (available in various finishe...this one is matte):

Leatherwood 2-7x:

I have personally used both the Burris and Leupold scopes and they are excellent. The optics are clear and bright, they are purpose-built as scout scopes so the eye relief is perfect in that position, and they are rated to withstand significant recoil forces. I have personally used the Leupold scout on .45-70, 450 Marlin and 50 Alaskan rifles with zero malfunctions of the scope.

Be very careful of the pistol scope in the scout role. The problem is often that having not been designed as scout scopes, the eye relief is not proper (too much), the field of view is very narrow, and the parallax is often set at improper ranges for the scout scope role.

I have had a Leupold break on me, maybe I'll try the Burris...

I would say it is the exception...not the rule with the Leupold Scout Scopes. They are notoriously tough little scopes. I trust my life to them on dangerous game rifles that I have used all over the world. In any event, they don't come with a lifetime guarantee for nothing...make good use of it! Leupold will make it right for you.

As for the Burris, I have only used one on a 308 Scout rifle which has not seen a great deal of field use...mostly range time. After several hundred rounds, it is holding up well and is as good as they day I mounted it. I have it in QR rings and despite moving it on and off the rifle to go to irons from time to time, it stays within 1/2MOA of zero when remounted. You can't ask for much more than that.

Re: scout rifle scope problems

The Burris scout scope I have is a 1x model that seems to no longer be made but its on an Encore 45-70 pistol and has really suffered a lot of hard field use hunting for about 4 yrs now and always holds its zero. I couldnt ask for a more rugged scope and I feel certain that the fixed power 2.75 is just as tough. I would rather spend an extra sixty three dollars and have that kind of reliabiility.
