SD Card Issues

I spent about an hour taking some photos this morning. Periodically, I would review a picture to see if it was light enough, in focus, etc. I finish and plug the ol' SD card into my laptop and NOTHING is there. I grab the camera and reinsert the SD card, click review, and there are all of my pictures. Oh man was I livid.... However, my new lease on life directed me to intelligently solve the problem, rather than beat the SD into fragments with a 3 lb. maul. I found a free program called "Zero Assumption Recovery" that can grab corrupt files off of SD cards and save them to a folder of your choosing. Now, it did take 17 minutes, but to get all of my pictures back.... I'll sacrifice instant gratification for solid results. I found the program by Google-fu and wanted to share.

Re: SD Card Issues

This looks like one of those neat little applications that should be on everyone's thumb drive/geek stick. I have a few really old apps in my computer trauma-kit, but I'll be replacing them with this one. The paid-for version with data and email recovery looks nice too...might have to get it.

Thanks!

Re: SD Card Issues

If you are using a SDHC card it may not be recognized by your laptops card reader. If this is the case you will need to get a small SDHC card reader that plugs into the USB port. Your SDHC card then plugs into the reader.

Re: SD Card Issues

Oh, in addition to the pictures that were recovered from today, it also recovered about 400 pictures that had been "deleted" from the card. Just a little FYI... Just because you delete it, doesn't mean that it is gone

Re: SD Card Issues

Digital media for the most part will not disappear simply by deleting it.

The "image" remains until the area is used for another purpose.

If you had a 1 gig card and deleted you pics, but then took another 1 gigs worth of pictures you would not be able to recover any of the previously deleted data because those areas of the storage media would have been reallocated.

Agree with HateCA, that'd be the other way to go.
